Fury From the Deep
Serial RR

Written by Victor Pemberton
Directed by Hugh David

Introduction

Fury from the Deep was written by Victor Pemberton, whose previous contribution to Doctor Who was not as a writer, but as an actor. Pemberton had played a minor role as one of the base crew in the season four Cybermen story, The Moonbase.

The Doctor, Jamie and Victoria land on a beach near a North Sea gas refinery, run by the dictatorial Chief Robson. Robson suspects the Doctor and his friends of being saboteurs, but he soon has more to contend with as contact with the offshore rigs is lost, and his desire to maintain gas flow becomes an obsession. Something, however, is blocking the pipeline...

"It's down there. In the darkness. In the pipeline. Waiting."

Fury from the Deep also sees Victoria (Deborah Watling) end her travels with the Doctor and Jamie.

All six episodes of Fury from the Deep are missing from the BBC archives. The only known film material in existence are a few clips originally removed by Australian censors, a little over two minutes in total. The soundtrack is available on BBC audio as part of their Missing Stories collection, with narration by Tom Baker.

Introduction by GARY ZIMMER (ZIMMER@bandicoot.me.rmit.edu.au).
