DOCTOR WHO
THE INVASION OF TIME
Written by
As David Agnew, Graham Williams and Anthony Read
Part Six
(Strikethrough indicates material cut from the televised airing)
(Overlap from 'We'll be thrown into a black star!')
[INT. TARDIS console room]
(As the view in the console room alternates between inverse and normal, the TARDIS makes distorted dematerialisation/landing sounds. LEELA runs in from the ship's inner door.)
LEELA: Doctor! Doctor!
DOCTOR: (weakly) Get Rodan.
LEELA: Rodan?
DOCTOR: Get Rodan.
(She pulls him to his feet, and he runs from the room. He pulls a switch on the wall and leans against the wall next to it. Things seem to have returned to normal.)
[INT. Force-field control area]
STOR: What has happened?
KELNER: He has stabilised, thrown the fail-safe switch in his time capsule.
STOR: With what effect?
KELNER: The capsule is fixed in its present state for eternity, until he throws off the fail-safe switch.
STOR: So he is trapped?
KELNER: Yes, Excellency. The Great Key. I could have done so much with the Great Key.
STOR: No-one may enter or leave this solid-state capsule?
KELNER: I have entrance probes for all time capsules, sir.
STOR: (pushing KELNER to the side) Bring the relevant probe with you. (He leads the way out, and KELNER bows.)
[INT. TARDIS fail-safe control]
(LEELA and RODAN are on the floor.)
DOCTOR: Quick, lock the door.
(LEELA bars the door, as the DOCTOR contemplates a piece of whatever was behind the panel in the wall.)
DOCTOR: Without that, no-one can reset the systems. Where are the others?
LEELA: (subdued) In the bathroom.
DOCTOR: The bathroom?
LEELA: Yes, in the bathroom.
DOCTOR: You got lost, didn't you?
LEELA: Well, it's bigger than it looks, your TARDIS.
DOCTOR: Aha. No, the mighty huntress got lost. Don't you think she got lost?
LEELA: I didn't. How do you know?
DOCTOR: I think you got lost.
LEELA: Listen, Doctor, you gave me the wrong directions.
DOCTOR: Come on. You got lost.
LEELA: How could you possibly expect me to follow those directions?
DOCTOR: (out the door) You got lost!
LEELA: (following) Doctor!
[INT. TARDIS console room]
(STOR slowly steps in and removes his helmet. Behind him are a SONTARAN and KELNER.)
STOR: This machine is a load of obsolete rubbish.
KELNER: This model was withdrawn centuries ago.
STOR: Make the systems function again.
KELNER: But I'm not an engineer, sir. I-
STOR: Make it work, or you'll die. (he pauses) Well?
SONTARAN: (at the inner door) He has fastened it with some kind of locking device from the other side, sir.
STOR: He's trapped in here now, and this is the only way out.
SONTARAN: I will open it, sir. Then we shall have them.
STOR: He has the Great Key. I want him captured intact but unharmed. After that, I will deal with him personally.
[INT. TARDIS storeroom]
DOCTOR: All right, let's walk. There's nothing to worry about. I've got a wonderful sense of direction. I've got a perfect sense of direction.
(He hesitates for a moment and then descends the steps.)
RODAN: I thought you said you had a good-
DOCTOR: Ssshhh.
LEELA: (sternly) Where are we?
DOCTOR: Storeroom twenty-three A.
LEELA: Where are we going?
DOCTOR: The workshop.
RODAN: Has he got a workshop on board?
DOCTOR [OC]: Of course I have. Come on!
[INT. TARDIS storeroom]
(They walk along a railing identical to that seen moments earlier.)
DOCTOR: What nobody understands of the advantage of my antiquated TARDIS is that it's fully equipped and completely reliable.
LEELA: Completely?
DOCTOR: (heading down identical steps) Yes. Yeah, well, almost completely.
[INT. TARDIS service tunnel]
LEELA: Where are we now?
DOCTOR: Service tunnel, Blue Section, two five. Everything's going to be all right. You just follow me.
[INT. TARDIS storeroom]
(The DOCTOR leads the way along a railing again, where familiar steps await.)
DOCTOR: Odd. I could have sworn I've been here before.
LEELA: We have.
DOCTOR: No. Oh. I must be in level twenty-three B.
RODAN: Well, wherever we are, it could do with a lick of paint.
LEELA: Lick of paint?
RODAN: Yes, clean it up a bit. You know, redecoration.
DOCTOR: Listen, I'm a Time Lord, not a, not a painter and decorator. I'm preoccupied with...
LEELA: Sontarans?
DOCTOR: Yes. Sontarans, Daleks, Cyber-
RODAN: Don't get excited.
DOCTOR: What did you say?
RODAN: I said 'don't get excited'.
DOCTOR: I'm not getting excited! I'm not getting-!
LEELA: (sotto) Doctor!
DOCTOR: (sotto) What is it?
LEELA: You are getting excited.
DOCTOR: No, I'm not.
[INT. TARDIS service tunnel]
(LEELA runs up behind the DOCTOR and puts her foot down on his scarf.)
DOCTOR: Would you get off my scarf, please?
LEELA: Doctor, we've been here before.
DOCTOR: Nonsense.
RODAN: Déjà vu.
LEELA: Déjà-what?
RODAN: Déjà vu. It's a common thing among time travellers.
DOCTOR: There you are.
LEELA: We have been here before.
DOCTOR: Rodan, tell her she's wrong.
RODAN: Doctor, she's absolutely right.
DOCTOR: What?
RODAN: We just travelled this route ten minutes ago.
DOCTOR: Nonsense. I know this TARDIS like the back of my hand.
(He is staring at his right palm. LEELA turns his hand over, so that the back is facing up.)
DOCTOR: Come on.
[INT. TARDIS swimming hall]
(The DOCTOR enters an area decorated with plants, as the others follow. He raps on a sundial on the wall.)
DOCTOR: That clock's slow.
(Meanwhile, KELNER operates controls on the TARDIS console, and the SONTARAN strides past the scanner and toward the inner door with a heavy-duty weapon. He lines this up with the lock, and the end begins to glow pink.)
DOCTOR: (rising from a seat amidst the plants) Come on. We can't sit around here all day.
LEELA: You just said you wanted to rest.
DOCTOR: I did. I've just had one. Let's go and find K9.
LEELA: K9?
(The others follow the DOCTOR out, LEELA running and RODAN at a more dignified pace.)
[INT. TARDIS workshop]
(There is beeping here, and we see a circlet-wearing K9 hooked up with wires to a bank of old-looking equipment. ANDRED looks on.)
ANDRED: If I had a dog like you in my unit, I'd make him a sergeant.
[INT. TARDIS storeroom]
(The group walk along the railing and head for the steps.)
RODAN: Why you can't use a perfectly modern seven oh six model I'll never understand.
DOCTOR: No character.
LEELA: Doctor.
DOCTOR: Yes?
LEELA: We have been here before.
(She sits down on the steps.)
DOCTOR: Nonsense. Rear area now, storeroom fourteen D. Onward!
(LEELA rises, defeated.)
[INT. TARDIS console room]
KELNER: It's impossible, sir.
STOR: Why?
KELNER: Well, it's obvious. You see, the Doctor has removed the primary refraction tube from his fail-safe controls. With that circuit broken, well, no-one can reactivate the TARDIS.
STOR: So I cannot destroy the TARDIS, and the Doc-tor cannot escape. Stalemate.
(As the SONTARAN continues his efforts, the bar across the inner door succumbs. The two resulting halves fall to the floor.)
[INT. TARDIS workshop]
DOCTOR: Hello. boy. How's it going?
K9: Nothing is going anywhere, Master. A state of perfect inertia.
DOCTOR: I know we're not going anywhere. I don't like the idea of inertia being perfect.
LEELA: Little K9.
DOCTOR: Is it clear?
ANDRED: At full capacity, Excellency, just as you ordered.
(A multi-tone alarm signal begins sounding.)
LEELA: What is it?
DOCTOR: Early warning. Something's broken in upstairs.
[INT. TARDIS fail-safe control]
STOR: We will do battle on your own ground, Doctor.
(He places his helmet back on his head in preparation.)
[INT. TARDIS workshop]
K9: Master.
DOCTOR: Leela, the key I gave you.
LEELA: Of course.
DOCTOR: Can I have it, please?
LEELA: Oh. (She hands it over.)
DOCTOR: Thank you. Rodan, look at me. You are now in a state of deep hypnosis. Can you hear me?
RODAN: Yes.
DOCTOR: Rodan, you will help K9. You will do whatever he tells you. When K9 asks you for this key, you will give it to him. You will not give the key to anyone else. You understand?
RODAN: Yes.
DOCTOR: Good. Watch the door. Come on. We're relying on you, K9.
K9: Master.
(The DOCTOR, ANDRED, and LEELA leave. RODAN squats next to K9.)
K9: One rod of type-three iridium alloy, one metre in length.
RODAN: (standing) Coming up.
[INT. TARDIS staircase]
DOCTOR: Sorry the lift's out of order. Ssshhh.
LEELA: What did you say?
DOCTOR: I said I'm sorry the lift's out of order.
LEELA: Oh. Where are we going?
DOCTOR: What? To the bathroom, of course.
LEELA: To the bathroom?
[INT. TARDIS service passage]
(STOR is consulting his communications unit.)
STOR: Very clever, Doctor.
KELNER: What is it, sir?
STOR: The Doctor has set up a biological barrage. My instruments cannot trace human life forms. We must return to his control room and eliminate this barrier.
KELNER: Wait, sir. There is another way. If I can trace the ancillary generator that powers this barrier...
STOR: Can you do this?
KELNER: I believe I can, sir.
STOR: Then you will be well rewarded. Lead on.
[INT. TARDIS swimming hall]
(RODAN is using a long crystal-ended device to work with equipment that has a pair of wires leading from it. The Sontaran party hurry through the TARDIS, down another set of stairs. We cut to an image of The Daily Mirror from Tuesday, 16 April 1912, whose front page covers the sinking of the Titanic. We see that it is in the gloved hands of BORUSA, who is drinking a blue cocktail through a curly straw.)
DOCTOR: (still walking) I've kept you waiting, Chancellor. (now actually facing BORUSA) I've kept you waiting, Chancellor.
BORUSA: I'm quite comfortable, thank you.
DOCTOR: Good.
(BORUSA hands over the newspaper.)
DOCTOR: I had nothing to do with this, I promise you. (he refers to the newspaper story) Chancellor, you know about the Rod of Rassilon.
BORUSA: Yes.
DOCTOR: And you know about the Sash of Rassilon.
BORUSA: Yes.
DOCTOR: And, especially, you know about the Great Key.
BORUSA: Yes.
DOCTOR: Therefore, it would be very bad for us if you were to fall into the hands of the Sontarans. No breeding, you see.
BORUSA: It's not just a question of breeding, surely.
DOCTOR: Oh, but it is. (BORUSA stands) It is, I assure you, Chancellor, it is. They're a clone species, you see. They can multiply at the rate of a million every four minutes. Shall we go?
BORUSA: I think so.
DOCTOR: (quietly) Good.
[INT. TARDIS storeroom]
(KELNER leads the two SONTARANS up the flight of steps and comes to a halt.)
STOR: Well?
KELNER: Tangential formation has been quite altered. The Doctor has made many modifications over the centuries. We should be by now-
STOR: Which way?
KELNER: Through here.
[INT. TARDIS swimming hall]
KELNER: Here, I'm sure of it.
(The SONTARANS and KELNER enter the deserted-seeming space. This includes some warrior-style leaping over the corner of the pool and flinging chairs to the side. ANDRED is on his way out but sees the group and throws a pool chair at Stor's aide, who nearly falls into the water as ANDRED exits.)
[INT. TARDIS service passage]
DOCTOR: Pick a door, any door. (they do so, with ANDRED changing his mind and picking the same side of the hallway as the others) Ready? Leave.
(BORUSA leaves through the far door, LEELA and ANDRED the mid-distance one, and the DOCTOR via one on the side that Andred decided against.)
[INT. TARDIS infirmary]
(LEELA gives a shout when the DOCTOR emerges in the same space she occupies. BORUSA is there too. They are in an area with curtains and other signs of hospital use.)
DOCTOR: Come on.
BORUSA: I wish you'd stabilise your pedestrian infrastructure, President.
DOCTOR: What? Come on, pull yourself together, Borusa. Hello, sick bay. Quick - curtains. Lock the door, Andred.
(While they pull the curtains across the rails, STOR strides up to the door and looks through its glass. He breaks the glass with his fist and reaches through to unlock the door. He moves down the rows of curtains, pulling each set back. ANDRED is flattened against the wall behind one and goes unseen as STOR passes. Reaching the end of the room, he turns and roars in frustration. He fires three shots in arbitrarily chosen directions, one of which hits ANDRED in the right arm. He and the others then leave.)
LEELA: (appearing from the inner part of the space where ANDRED stands) Let's get out of here.
ANDRED: You go on. I'll hold them off.
LEELA: With what? We must catch the others. We'll go my way. Come on.
[INT. TARDIS swimming hall]
DOCTOR: What is it?
ANDRED: (holding his arm) Sorry about this. I'm not going to be much good to you now.
DOCTOR: Leela?
LEELA: Yes?
DOCTOR: Take these two back to the workshop. You know the way.
LEELA: Well, as well as I did last time.
DOCTOR: It's along there on the left. Second on the left, up two stages-
LEELA: Don't worry, Doctor. I'll find my own way.
DOCTOR: Good. Bye, bye.
(The DOCTOR hides among the plants.)
[INT. TARDIS storeroom]
LEELA: Oh, no.
BORUSA: Where are we?
LEELA: D´jà vu. Back where we started.
(The DOCTOR, unseen, is making bird calls, causing the SONTARAN looking about at the plants to fire indiscriminately. The bird calls take on a mocking tone, and the SONTARAN steps to the side to continue firing. He ends up in the maw of a large carnivorous plant, which closes on him. Chewing motions begin, and the DOCTOR steps out of hiding. Shaking his head as he leaves, the DOCTOR stops to shake the Sontaran arm protruding from the plant's clutches.)
[INT. TARDIS service passage]
STOR: This is useless! Where is the ancillary power unit?
KELNER: I don't know.
STOR: What?
(STOR raises his weapon.)
KELNER: Wait! Perhaps the Doctor is individual.
STOR: That is a weakness. Only through unity is there strength.
KELNER: He has hidden it, I think.
STOR: Where?
KELNER: I believe I begin to understand the Doctor.
STOR: I doubt that.
KELNER: It is a utilitarian unit. He would disguise it with beauty.
[INT. TARDIS storeroom]
DOCTOR: (after tripping on the steps) Come on, Doctor. You've got a perfect sense of direction.
(KELNER and STOR slowly enter the foliage-rich area near the pool. Elsewhere, the DOCTOR whistles 'Colonel Bogey' while passing along a service passage.)
[INT. TARDIS swimming hall]
(STOR uses his weapon to free his hapless subordinate from the plant.)
SONTARAN: (rising) I could not-
STOR: Explanations will wait. My orders are clear. You will follow this fool and destroy the power unit he will show you. (taking off his helmet) I have other duties.
[INT. TARDIS service passage]
(The entire group, apart from Rodan and K9, meet once more.)
LEELA: Doctor.
DOCTOR: Yes.
LEELA: Have you defeated them?
DOCTOR: No. We've got to get to the workshop.
BORUSA: Workshop?
DOCTOR: Yes, the workshop. Come on. (He leads.)
[INT. TARDIS ancillary power station]
(KELNER and the SONTARAN have reached a corridor with many paintings on either side. Behind them is something very similar to the Venus de Milo. They slow. KELNER stands in front of the Arnolfini Portrait.)
KELNER: How beautiful.
SONTARAN: What is this place?
KELNER: Ancillary power station.
(KELNER slowly walks back to the Venus, passing his hand down her left leg until flipping a switch behind a bit of plaster. The works of art fade away. KELNER steps back to the vacant spot where he had mused on Van Eyck's artistry and removes the circuit-breaker from behind the clear case that is now visible on the wall. There is a bleep.)
KELNER: Now, try your tracer.
SONTARAN: The humanoids are three levels below.
[INT. TARDIS workshop]
DOCTOR: Finished?
RODAN: Yes, it's finished.
DOCTOR: Where is it? (she points toward the other side of the room) Give me the key. (he snaps his fingers) Wake up, Rodan. Give me the key.
(She does so. The DOCTOR goes where she pointed and raises a large weapon that has a body composed of clear cylinders. He sets this on a table.)
LEELA: What is it?
BORUSA: No!
DOCTOR: You know how helpless we are against the Sontarans.
BORUSA: I forbid you to use it. You should never have constructed it.
RODAN: But what is it?
DOCTOR: It's the ultimate weapon. the Demat Gun.
RODAN: That's impossible!
DOCTOR: You built it under hypnosis. But how to arm it, hmm? Is that why the key remained hidden for so long? (inserting the Great Key behind the cylinders, which start emitting a soft golden glow and a hum) I could rule the universe with this, Chancellor.
BORUSA: Is that what you want? Destroy that gun. Destroy all knowledge of it. It'll throw us back to the darkest age!
SONTARAN: No, Chancellor, forward.
(The DOCTOR activates the gun without lifting it from the table. The beam angles out and catches the SONTARAN, who vanishes. LEELA leaps down to KELNER and places her knife at his throat.)
DOCTOR: No, wait, wait, Leela! Don't kill him! Kelner, where's Stor? (waiting half a second) Kill him.
KELNER: No! No! He's in the Panopticon.
DOCTOR: The... Borusa, the Matrix.
(STOR walks heavily along a service corridor. The DOCTOR follows with the Demat Gun. They nearly encounter each other at various junctions on their way toward the outer door of the TARDIS. They both leave the TARDIS. The DOCTOR circles with the gun and takes off his hat.)
[INT. Panopticon]
(STOR mounts the dais. He is holding something.)
DOCTOR: Hold it, Stor.
(He sits with the Demat Gun pointed upward, toward STOR. STOR holds up the device.)
STOR: Doc-tor. This grenade (ticking) will give me a lot of pleasure.
DOCTOR: You'll destroy us all.
STOR: Yes. It is a glory to die for a glorious Sontaran empire.
DOCTOR: But you'll destroy this entire galaxy.
STOR: Yesss, and all of the Time Lords with it.
DOCTOR: And your battle fleet.
STOR: Yes, Doctor, but it is a small price to pay. If we cannot control the power of the Time Lords, then we shall destroy it. Goodbye, Doctor.
(He starts to set the grenade down, and the DOCTOR shoots him. A wave of pure white emanates from where STOR stands. The DOCTOR too winks out. When the whiteness fades, the DOCTOR is lying prostrate and the Demat Gun is nowhere to be seen. The Great Key lies beside the tassels of the scarf.)
[INT. TARDIS workshop]
ANDRED: Leela, listen.
(LEELA holds her knife at the ready - the heavy footfalls do not bode well. Their source then appears.)
DOCTOR: Hello, Leela.
LEELA: Oh, Doctor.
DOCTOR: Put it away. Borusa, what are you doing here?
BORUSA: Your Excellence.
(KELNER slowly falls to his knees, agape.)
DOCTOR: Excellence? Excellence? (finding that he is wearing the Sash of Rassilon) Is this some kind of a joke, Borusa? It's not like you to make jokes.
(BORUSA lifts the sash off over the DOCTOR's head.)
BORUSA: Have you forgotten your induction?
DOCTOR: My induction?
BORUSA: The Vardans?
DOCTOR: (sotto) Vardans.
BORUSA: The Sontarans?
DOCTOR: (sotto) Sontarans.
BORUSA: Doctor, you saved Gallifrey.
DOCTOR: I have? Oh. Well, what do you think of that, Leela?
LEELA: I think you've gone mad.
BORUSA: He remembers nothing. It is the wisdom of Rassilon.
[INT. Citadel]
(The DOCTOR enters the area and is greeted with applause and a reprise of the induction anthem. However, he makes a beeline for the TARDIS.)
DOCTOR: Well, ta-ta, everybody. Come on, Leela. (noticing that she hasn't followed) Come on. What's the matter?
LEELA: I am staying.
DOCTOR: What? Staying? Here? Why?
(Her response is to take ANDRED's hand.)
DOCTOR: Ah, I see.
ANDRED: I hope th-
DOCTOR: Yes, I'm sure you do hope. She'll look after you. She's terribly good with a knife. Come on, K9.
K9: Negative. I remain.
DOCTOR: Here?
K9: Affirmative.
DOCTOR: Why?
K9: To look after the mistress.
(The DOCTOR opens his mouth to say something but doesn't know what to say. He turns away, toward the TARDIS.)
LEELA: Doctor?
DOCTOR: (emerging) Yes?
LEELA: I will miss you.
(He smiles, and then the door closes.)
[INT. TARDIS console room]
(The DOCTOR leans against the inside of the door and muses.)
DOCTOR: I'll miss you too, savage.
(After a moment, he heads for the console.)
[INT. Citadel]
(The TARDIS dematerialises.)
BORUSA: Where will he go now, I wonder.
LEELA: Somewhere else.
(We see the DOCTOR slowly push a large cardboard box into the console room. He operates some controls at the console. Outside, LEELA and K9 squat beside the mechanical mutt.)
LEELA: Will he be lonely, K9?
K9: Insufficient data, Mistress.
(Both K9 and LEELA slowly bow their heads. Back inside the TARDIS, we pan down to the cardboard box at the edge of the console - on the side is printed 'K9 MII'. The DOCTOR slowly breaks into a broad grin.)
