2X06: RESET
==========================

FADE IN:

INTRODUCTION

JACK HARKNESS: (v.o.) Torchwood -- outside the Government, beyond the police --
fighting for the future on behalf of the human race. The 21st century is when everything
changes ... and Torchwood is ready.

FADE IN:

EXT. WAREHOUSE – NIGHT

(A lone weevil runs quickly toward the warehouse.)

INT. WAREHOUSE – CONTINUOUS

(The weevil pauses at the doorway and looks around. He enters the warehouse, maneuvering
his way through the various glass panels.)

(TOP VIEW DOWN: The warehouse is cluttered with various bus stop covers, buses and other
items too dark to make out. The weevil moves quickly.)

(Owen and Toshiko enter the warehouse with their flashlights and guns raised. They move
quickly through the items.)

VARIOUS CUTS:

(The weevil continues through the warehouse. Owen and Toshiko continue after the weevil.)

(The weevil stops and snarls at something.)

(Owen comes upon the weevil. The weevil turns and snarls at Owen, then runs away. Owen
turns and looks at the dead body on the ground. He checks the man and looks at Toshiko.)

OWEN: He's dead.

CUT TO:

EXT. CARDIFF CITY (STOCK) -- NIGHT

(ZOOM OUT on the city night lights.)

(ZOOM BACK IN on the Millennium Center where Torchwood is located.)

INT. TRAVEL COVER SHOP – NIGHT

(CLOSE-UP: Old newspaper front page on the door. The headline is an old familiar one,
"New Mayor, new Cardiff.")

VISITOR POV

(The door opens causing the bell to jingle. A yellow CLOSED sign hangs on the column under
a wall clock which reads 9:00.)

(We enter the small travel shop. Ianto is behind the counter flipping through a travel
book. The wall clock to his left reads 4:40. The clock behind him reads 1:15. He looks
up.)

IANTO: Sorry, we're closing.

(A hand breaks into camera frame holding up an ID card. Ianto looks at the card and
immediately snaps into motion. He closes the travel book and stands up straight.)

IANTO: Excuse me, ma'am.

(Ianto walks over to the end of the counter and indicates the wall. We turn to look at the
wall. It opens.)

INT. THE HUB – AUTOPSY AREA – NIGHT

(The dead body is on the table, his dead eyes still open.)

JACK: Documents on the body identify the victim as Meredith Roberts.

(Jack holds the DRIVER’S LICENSE in an evidence bag. Toshiko is standing next to him.

DRIVING LICENSCE – TRWVDDED YRRU
      1. ROBERTS
      2. MEREDITH
      3. 11-01-82 WALES
      [etc.] )

OWEN: No obvious signs of violence.

(Owen is barely starting on the body. Gwen stands on the other side of the table.)

GWEN: Are we saying it wasn't the Weevil?

OWEN: Give me a chance, Miss Cooper. I've only just started.

IANTO: (from speakers) Jack, your VIP visitor is here.

(Jack runs out leaving everyone else perplexed.)

GWEN: I didn't realize we were having a visitor.

(Gwen, Owen and Toshiko follow.)

INT. THE HUB – NIGHT

(The cog door alarms sound. Jack heads over as the main gates in front of the door opens.)

JACK: Suddenly, in an underground mortuary, on a wet night in Cardiff, I hear the
song of a nightingale.

(Gwen, Owen and Toshiko appear behind Jack. The door rolls open. It’s Martha Jones
followed by Ianto.)

JACK: Miss Martha Jones.

(Martha looks at Jack and smiles. He smiles and winks back at her.)

FADE IN:

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS -- NIGHT

(Martha and Jack hug.)

MARTHA: Oh, it's good to see you, Jack.

(Jack laughs. He turns and introduces the rest of the team to her.)

JACK: Toshiko. Owen, Gwen, Ianto (Ianto waves hi) ... meet Martha.

(Martha picks up her kit and her bag.)

OWEN: Uh, just a casual visit or...?

MARTHA: I'm here to complete your postmortem.

(She walks past Owen on her way to the autopsy area. Owen looks confused.)

JACK: Dr. Jones is from UNIT.

(Jack heads back to the autopsy area. Owen follows. Gwen runs to catch up.)

GWEN: Oh, um, sorry, sorry, I get a bit confused. Which one's UNIT?

INT. THE HUB – AUTOPSY AREA -- CONTINUOUS

(Martha and Owen head down to the autopsy area as everyone settles around and above them
to watch.)

JACK: Intelligence, military, cute red caps -- the acceptable face of
intelligence-gathering on aliens. We're more ad hoc. (to Martha) But better looking.

(Martha puts her kit down and opens it. She puts her gloves and coat on as she talks.)

MARTHA: I identified a pattern from UNIT's data on sudden deaths. Toxic shock.
Nothing to link the victims. Different ages, sexes, ethnic origins, occupations. But there
was a statistically significant concentration in South Wales.

(Martha take sout a magnifying light.)

JACK: Come on, Martha, be honest. You just came all this way to see me.

(She checks the body’s left big toe.)

MARTHA: Still struggling to conquer your shyness, Jack?

(Jack laughs.)

OWEN: So what about this pattern, then, Dr. Jones?

MARTHA: They were being written off as suicides or accidents.

(Martha checks the body’s right eye.)

MARTHA: Look. Puncture mark. Hypodermic needle. You'll find his bloodstream was
pumped full of ammonium hydroxide.

OWEN: Yeah. Bloodstream. That was the thing I was going to do next.

MARTHA: Have you checked his medical records?

OWEN: Uh, no. I was just about to.

MARTHA: Well, let's give it a go. You never know, Owen, you might learn something.

(Owen refrains from commenting. He turns and glances at Jack who smiles down at them.)

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS -- NIGHT

(Toshiko runs the search throught he Royal Cardiff Infirmary Records database. She enters
the information:
      PATIENT NAME: MEREDITH ROBERTS
      DATE OF BIRTH: 11 01 1962 )

OWEN: One Meredith Roberts, age 45.

(Owen, Martha and Jack wait for the results.)

TOSHIKO: (mutters) I know there's been a major crash on the NHS system. Wiped a
shedload of files.

MARTHA: Including all the victims I flagged up from the UNIT data.

(The computer shows:
      SUBJECT: ROBERTS, MEREDITH
      DATA: IRRETRIEVABLE )

MARTHA: And now yours.

(Jack shakes his head.)

TOSHIKO: A computer crash wouldn't delete data so cleanly. This is deliberate. Let
me look into it.

CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB – JACK’S OFFICE -- NIGHT

(Jack puts his feet up onhis desk as he talks with Martha.)

JACK: How's the family?

(Martha is looking at the things in Jack’s office. She turns and looks at him.)

MARTHA: Getting better. They send their love.

JACK: Give them mine.

(He sits up, arms on the desk, and feet back on the floor. He smiles at Martha.)

JACK: So ... End of the World Survivors Club.

MARTHA: (sits down) God, I am so glad to see you, Jack!

JACK: See, you did come all this way just to see me. It's the jaw line. Once seen,
always yearned for.

(They share a laugh. He looks at her.)

JACK: Do you miss him?

MARTHA: No. I made my choice. (He looks at her doubtfully.) Maybe sometimes.

JACK: Ah!

MARTHA: Tiny bit. Tiny, tiny. Then I come to my senses again. Anyway, I've got
plenty to occupy me.

JACK: Oh, yeah, Miss Highfalutin'. What is it? Medical officer?

MARTHA: (sits back) Oh, yes.

JACK: So do I have to call you ma'am?

(He stands up and settles on the edge of his desk.)

MARTHA: No. Just follow my orders to the letter.

JACK: (serious) You should have called me if you were looking for a job.

MARTHA: I wasn't. This woman from UNIT rang out of the blue, said I was just what
they needed, that I'd come highly recommended by an impeccable source.

JACK: (points upward) You mean ... ?

MARTHA: Well, who else would have done it?

JACK: (nods thoughtfully) He must have thought he owed you a favour. Guess we all
do. So, do you think you could get me one of those red caps for personal use? I’m
thinking Ianto might look good in it.

(Martha stands up.)

MARTHA: You want uniforms, get your own. Now, am I going to get the guided tour?

(Jack stands at attention and salutes her.)

JACK: Yes, ma'am, whatever you say, ma'am! Huah!

MARTHA: Leave it!

(He laughs as they head out.)

CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB – LAB / HOT HOUSE -- NIGHT

(Jack and Gwen are giving Martha a tour of the area.)

JACK: So that's the hot house. Tour continues this way, ladies, please. No
dawdling.

(Jack leaves the hot house. Gwen and Martha linger. Jack waits for them on the catwalk.)

GWEN: Um, so, you know Jack pretty well, then?

MARTHA: Oh, we were only together for ... a few days. But it was pretty intense.

(Gwen’s eyes grow wide.)

GWEN: You mean ... ?

MARTHA: Oh, God, no! No, not that sort of intense. Nothing like that. Why? Are you
and him...?

GWEN: No, no, not at all.

MARTHA: We must be the only two people on the planet.

GWEN: I know. What are we doing wrong?

(Gwen and Martha share a laugh.)

JACK: (shouts) Oi! You talking about me?

(Gwen and Martha leave the greenhouse and head toward Jack.)

GWEN: No, no, we were just discussing alien flora, weren't we?

MARTHA: Oh, yeah.

JACK: She's no fun. Raise your game, girls!

(Jack continues along the catwalk. Gwen turns and shares a smile with Martha as they
follow him.)

CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS

(They reach the workstations. Martha reaches for an alien gadget on a lighted table. She
picks it up and looks at it. Gwen sits down. Owen exits the autopsy area and heads over.)

MARTHA: You've got some well weird kit. What's this?

JACK: Be careful. It's an alien artefact.

(Owen joins them and reaches for the device.)

OWEN: Yeah, There's a lot of argument about this. But for my money, it's got to be
a surgical instrument.

(It hums as he powers it on and twists the side knob.)

MARTHA: Really?

JACK: He's guessing. Typical medic.

OWEN: Hmm. Okay, right. Well, I call it a "singularity scalpel." See,
what it does is it concentrates energy on a tiny fixed point without damaging anything on
the way. It's brilliant.

MARTHA: It's amazing.

GWEN: Yeah, do you remember the last time you did that, Owen ... ?

OWEN: (interrupts) Yes, yes. Right, now, all we're going to do is, we're going to
vaporize this paper without even scorching the cup.

(He puts a paper cup on the lighted table and scrunches a paper into a ball, putting it
inside the paper cup.)

JACK: (to Martha) This is going to end in tears.

(Jack leads Martha to a safer position behind Owen.)

OWEN: Okay.

(Owen aims the singularity scalpel at the paper cup and turns the knob to adjust it. On
the screen is the image of the cup. Owen turns the various knobs. Gwen pushes her chair
away from the table with the cup on it.)

(Owen continues to turn the knobs as he focuses on the paper ball inside the cup. The
paper ball appears on the monitor.)

(Footsteps approach.)

(Ianto is walking past just as Owen fires. The pulse hits the machinery at the workstation
in the far corner, barely missing Ianto. He yells, tossing up whatever he was carrying on
his tray.)

IANTO: Aagh!

(Martha covers her ears.)

(Ianto looks at the machinery behind him. He turns and glares at Owen.)

OWEN: (mutters) Uh, haven't quite got the calibration right yet.

(Jack and Gwen start laughing.)

(Ianto steps up to the platform, tugs his suit down and addresses Jack.)

IANTO: Jack.

JACK: Mmm.

IANTO: There's been another attack. Assault with a hypodermic. Only this time, the
victim survived. Woman, aged 27. She's in the hospital. Medical records wiped, just like
the others.

(They’re on the move. Owen puts the singularity scalpel back on the table. Gwen gets
up.)

CUT TO:

EXT. CARDIFF CITY HIGHWAY LIGHTS (STOCK) -- NIGHT

(Top view down of the roads.)

INT. HOSPITAL -- NIGHT

(Martha takes a vial of blood from the surviving victim.)

MARIE: Yeah, but the doctors said they'd finished with me.

MARTHA: We're a bit different.

(Gwen is on the other side of the bed while Jack stands at the foot of the bed.)

GWEN: We know this is tough on you, Marie. But did you recognize the man who
attacked you?

MARIE: I already told the police.

JACK: We're different from them, too.

MARIE: No, I never seen him before.

GWEN: Did he say anything in the course of the attack?

MARIE: No.

MARTHA: Open wide.

(Martha takes a swab sample from Marie’s mouth.)

MARIE: Look, he just ... he just came towards me with a great big bloody needle,
didn't he? You know, my dog bit him and then I kicked him in the nuts.

(Jack laughs.)

JACK: Respect!

CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB – LAB (HOTHOUSE/GREENHOUSE) -- NIGHT

(Owen and Martha are working. The move fast and work well together. Martha grabs two
bottles with orange and green liquid inisde. She hands them to Owen. He puts them on the
table. She grabs the squeeze bottle and tosses it to him. He catches it.)

(Martha smiles, enjoying herself. Owen grabs another squeeze bottle and a cylinder off the
side table. Martha opens the cover off a petrie dish. Owen uncaps a bottle and puts some
liquid from the two squeeze bottles in it. Martha scratches the bottom of the petrie dish
as Owen shakes his bottle and mutters something to Martha that makes her laugh. Owen adds
orange drops to his bottle. Martha continues working.)

(Owen looks at a transparency film.)

OWEN: This is a... three four.

(Martha nods.)

(She holds out the slide. Owen adds a couple of drops of the stain mixture from the bottle
he’s holding. He puts the bottle down and takes the slide from Martha.)

(Owen goes to the computer and types.)

OWEN: (mutters something)

(TIME CUT TO: Martha turns and looks at the monitor and the moving blue splotch on the
screen. Owen settles next to her.)

OWEN: So you and Jack go back a long way?

MARTHA: Forward and back, really.

OWEN: What brought you together?

MARTHA: Let's say ... we were under the same doctor.

(Owen looks confused.)

MARTHA: These killings - why the ammonium hydroxide? It's a weird way to kill
someone.

OWEN: Yeah, Yeah. It's gross. It's like injecting them with bleach.

MARTHA: Unless the objective isn't just killing.

OWEN: It's destroying something in the victim's bloodstream.

(They both take a step toward the monitor as they think.)

MARTHA: It's getting rid of evidence!

(Martha looks at Owen who nods in agreement.)

CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB – JACK’S OFFICE

(Marie’s picture and info are up on the clearn board doubling as a monitor. Everyone
meets.)

JACK: Locally, we've got a murder victim and a survivor. Both attacked with
hypodermics, both with their medical records wiped.

MARTHA: And more cases across the UK. We think the point of the attacks is to
destroy evidence of their medical condition.

JACK: Gwen, Ianto, pursue the criminal investigation.

GWEN: Okay.

JACK: Martha, Owen will follow up with the medical side.

OWEN: Fine.

JACK: Tosh, any luck in retrieving those medical records?

TOSHIKO: Not yet. I'm gonna have to dig down into the system memories, see if I can
find any remnants of deleted or temporary files. Completely illegally, of course.

JACK: Do what you have to. We're not dealing with a freak with some needle fetish.
This is a conspiracy.

ZOOM TO:

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS

(Toshiko is at her workstation.)

TOSHIKO: Ianto, the police have found another body in Heath Park. From the initial
reports, it's got all the hallmarks of the other attacks.

(On another part of the hub, Ianto hits his comm.)

IANTO: (to comm) I'll get Gwen, head out there now.

(Ianto heads out.)

CUT TO:

EXT. CARDIFF CITY (STOCK) – DAY

(Standard view of the city.)

EXT. HEATH PARK – DAY

(The Torchwood SUV arrives at the crime scene. SOCO is there and the place is taped off.)

(The SUV parks. Gwen and Ianto get out of the SUV. They head for the site.)

GWEN: (to officer) What have you got?

POLICE: Body was found early this morning. Caucasian male, early 20s.

(He points them forward.)

GWEN: Okay, thanks.

(Gwen and Ianto arrive at the tent over the body.)

GWEN: Who is he?

POLICE: Barry Leonard. Student. (Gwen checks the eyes.) Doctor said it looked like
...

GWEN: (interrupts) Toxic shock.

CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB – CORRIDOR

(Gwen and Martha walk through the corridor.)

GWEN: The attack took place in the woods, so no witnesses, no CCTV.

MARTHA: Same as the others.

GWEN: Yeah. Tosh just checked Barry's medical records - already wiped.

(Gwen punches in the security code at the door. The door opens to the conference room.)

MARTHA: And the puncture mark on his eyeball was identical to the other victims. I
mean, Jack's right. These attacks are not random, they're clinical. Professional. More
like assassinations.

GWEN: Except Barry Leonard was a student. Who'd assassinate a student?

MARTHA: Student Loans Company.

GWEN: Yeah, yeah, I think you've just cracked it. (They smirk.) But why delete
medical records? You know, what did all these people have in common?

MARTHA: Owen's analyzing Marie's test results now. I’m hoping that will give
us an indication.

GWEN: So we’re still in the dark, no idea where the killer will strike next
and the attacks are getting more frequent.

MARTHA: We keep looking, Gwen, we'll find something.

(Martha turns to head back. She stops.)

IANTO: (from pa) Martha, call from the hospital. Marie's had some sort of seizure.

(Martha hurries out.)

CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB – HOT HOUSE LAB -- CONTINUOUS

(Martha walks in.)

MARTHA: They want us at the hospital. Marie's collapsed.

OWEN: Yeah? My money's on this stuff. (He points to the DNA double helix on the
monitor.) From Marie's blood. It's a new one on me.

MARTHA: Yeah, me too. Have you run an isoenzyme analysis on it?

OWEN: No, not yet. What are you thinking? Parasitic infection?

MARTHA: Could be.

OWEN: It's got to be down to this stuff, cause otherwise I haven't got a clue
what's wrong with her.

MARTHA: Yeah - no infections, no deficiencies in organ function, perfect
cholesterol levels, ideal blood pressure.

OWEN: Yeah, exactly. She's so normal, she's abnormal.

CUT TO:

INT. HOSPITAL – MARIE’S ROOM

(Owen and Martha are back in Marie’s room. Marie groans. Martha tries to check her
eyes with a penlight.)

MARTHA: Marie? Marie, can you hear me?

MARIE: Mmm, yeah.

OWEN: Okay, you've got something in your blood that we don't recognize, all right?
We think it's behind your current illness and we need to know what's been happening to you
so we can help you.

MARIE: Well, you're the doctors. You tell me.

(Martha and Owen look at each other.)

MIKE: (PRE-LAP) (v.o.) Barry was my best mate.

VARIOUS FLASHES OF: Barry’s dead body including a CLOSE-UP of the injection in the
eye.

INT. DORM ROOM – DAY

(Gwen talks with Barry’s friend while Ianto looks around the dorm room.)

MIKE: We were doing the same course. Met him on the first day.

GWEN: Was Barry doing any sort of drugs at all?

MIKE: Well, he used to be really clean. Reckoned he had to be careful about what
went into his body because of his diabetes.

(This catches Ianto’s attention.)

IANTO: Barry was diabetic?

MIKE: Sure. But when they cured that, he was doing booze, blow ...

(At the mention of Barry being cured, Ianto and Gwen share a surprised look.)

GWEN: Wait a minute. You're telling me Barry's diabetes was cured?

MIKE: Sure.

IANTO: That's impossible.

MIKE: Well, he stopped taking insulin. He was fine.

(Ianto turns away and switches on his comm.)

IANTO: (to comm) Owen, something you should know.

GWEN: So who performed this miracle cure?

MIKE: I don’t know. He was very quiet about that. All I know is, he was
suddenly flashing a load of wedge about.

IANTO: (to comm) Barry Leonard is said to have recovered from diabetes.

INT. HOSPITAL – MARIE’S ROOM – DAY

OWEN: (to comm) Thanks, Ianto. (switches comm off) (clears throat) Right. Listen,
Marie, you're gonna have to level with us. This could be a matter of life and death. Have
you ever had a serious medical condition?

MARIE: Too good to be true.

MARTHA: What do you mean?

MARIE: I had HIV.

MARTHA: You're perfectly clear of antibodies. That's not medically possible.

MARIE: That's the Reset.

MARTHA: Reset? What are we talking about? A drug?

OWEN: Right, I'm not familiar with Reset, so any idea of a chemical name?

(She laughs at the absurdity. She starts coughing.)

OWEN: Where d'you get it from, Marie?

MARIE: I got it from the Pharm.

MARTHA: The farm? What farm? Marie!

MARIE: No, P-H-A-R-M, the Pharm. It's a medical research place, all right?

OWEN: How did you get it from there?

MARIE: They gave it to me. They paid me a lot of money. They said I should to keep
quiet about it cos it was part of the contract.

MARTHA: Are you saying you were a clinical trial subject?

(Marie slams backward onto the bed and convulses. The monitor alarm blares.)

MARTHA: Marie?

OWEN: Convulsing!

MARTHA: Marie!

(Owen gets the syringe as Martha holds down Marie’s hands. Marie continues to
convulse.)

OWEN: I'll give her another 10 mil.

MARTHA: You're all right.

(Owen gets the syringe and injects Marie’s thigh. It happens very fast. Marie stops
convulsing abruptly. The monitor flatlines. Martha turns to Owen.)

MARTHA: She's dead.

(As they stand there looking perplexed, a swarm of bugs fly out of Marie’s mouth.
Martha and Owen stand there looking at it. Suddenly, the swarm turns and heads for them.)

OWEN: No!

(Martha screams and ducks to get out of the way. Owen hits the button on the panel. He
joins Martha as they huddle on the floor in the corner.)

OWEN: (shouts) Emergency! Biohazard! Clear the area! Martha!

(They bat at the bugs swarming around them and cover their noses and mouths with their
masks. They keep their heads down. The swarm stops and the bugs die, their insect-like
bodies fluttering to the floor.)

(Owen lifts his finger up and looks at one of the tiny insects on the tip of his finger.)

CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB – CONFERENCE ROOM – DAY

(The image of the alien bug is up on the monitor as Martha and Owen talk.)

MARTHA: So it's an alien larva, incubating in human bodies.

OWEN: We've never seen anything like it. So it left Marie's body when she died,
presumably looking for another host for its next stage of development.

MARTHA: Which could have been us.

OWEN: Yeah. Fortunately, when they didn't find one quickly, they died.

MARTHA: I wonder what this cute little larva grows up to be?

SLIDE PAST THE COLUMN TO:

(Owen and Martha stand in front of the monitor as they share their findings with the rest
of the team.)

OWEN: This, folks, is a molecular model of the drug that we found in Marie's blood.

MARTHA: She called it Reset.

IANTO: So what does it do?

OWEN: Well, think about when you run, you know, a virus scan through your computer,
yeah? The software works its way through the files and when it finds a Trojan or a virus
or whatever, identifies it and then it deletes it. That is what this stuff does to the
human body. But it's not just viruses. It's harmful bacteria, toxins, even mutant cells,
you name it. It's like the body's been turned back to its factory settings.

MARTHA: It's the ultimate magic bullet. Supersedes anything and everything in the
pharmacological armory.

GWEN: But that would be the greatest medical discovery in history.

MARTHA: Exactly. Except, it comes bundled with a lethal alien parasite.

(Martha puts the image of the alien insect up on the monitor.)

JACK: Ah, not so good a discovery.

MARTHA: The parasite needs a healthy body until it's incubated. So the parasite egg
incorporates this magic bullet, which puts everything in the system back to its factory
settings.

JACK: Reset. Neato. So who runs the Pharm?

IANTO: Well, the public image is innocent enough. Private-public partnership
between the government and a consortium of the pharmaceutical companies. Researching and
developing cutting-edge biotechnology.

TOSHIKO: Their IT systems are way more cutting-edge than they need to be. Plus,
they've got seemingly unrestricted security clearance.

MARTHA: Which means they'd have the capability to erase medical records if they
wanted to.

TOSHIKO: Exactly.

JACK: Who runs this outfit?

GWEN: Institute director is a Dr. Aaron Copley.

(Ianto reaches over and changes the monitor to show Dr. Copley’s photo and info.)

OWEN: Yeah, I know his work. He's one of the most respected research scientists in
his field.

IANTO: Harvard graduate. Did research at Cambridge. Last job, Harvard Professor of
Molecular Pharmacology. Came to the UK to set up the Pharm.

JACK: Hmm, he's kinda handsome, too. D'you think he'll like visitors?

CUT TO:

EXT. ROAD – DAY

(The Torchwood SUV zooms across the country road leading up to the building at the base of
the mountains in the trees.)

EXT. SECURITY GATE – DAY

(The Torchwood SUV pulls up to the security gate. The guard with the clipboard approaches
Jack’s open window.)

JACK: Torchwood.

(The guard checks the clipboard and nods. He nods to the other guard to open the gate.)

(Inside, Jack turns and looks at Owen.)

(The gate opens. The SUV continues through. Jack turns and looks at the gun on the
guard’s hip.)

(The Torchwood SUV pulls up to the front of the building.)

CUT TO:

INT. THE PHARM – COPLEY’S OFFICE – DAY

(Dr. Aaron Copley sits behind his desk as he talks with Jack and Owen. Jack sits on the
other side of the desk while Owen stands in the back. Copley is looking through a file.)

AARON COPLEY: Sorry you've had a wasted journey, Mr... Harker.

JACK: Harkness. And it's Captain, but you can call me Jack.

AARON COPLEY: Captain? Where did you park your boat?

JACK: (laugs) I like a man with a sense of humor. Know any good gags about clinical
trials?

(Copley is looking through watermarked Torchwood photos of the dead victims.)

AARON COPLEY: Well, Jack, none of these faces mean anything to me. And as the
institute director, I would have met them personally, had they been our trial subjects.

(Copley puts the file folder back on the desk.)

JACK: Dr. Copley...

AARON COPLEY: Professor, actually.

(Jack gets up and leans forward, his hands flat on the desk.)

JACK: But I can call you Aaron, right?

(Jack opens the file folder and spreads out the photos of the last three victims.)

JACK: See, this is a little awkward. Two of these people were murdered. Another
died of a parasitic infection of alien origin and one of the victims mentioned your
organization's name shortly before she died.

AARON COPLEY: "Alien origin"? That's preposterous.

OWEN: (interrupts) Uh, Professor, when I was writing my MD thesis, your published
works on immunology were very helpful, so thank you.

AARON COPLEY: I’m glad to be of service.

OWEN: Now, if there was a drug that could restore the human body back to its
factory settings, as it were, you would know about it.

AARON COPLEY: (smiles) You're right, I would. But nothing like that exists.

JACK: I had a boyfriend whose nostrils flared when he was lying.

(Copley’s smile vanishes. He looks at his watch and stands up.)

AARON COPLEY: I'm already late for my next appointment.

JACK: You go ahead. We'll have a look around.

AARON COPLEY: Well, obviously our research suites are classified, so we can't grant
you access to those, but we'd be delighted to give you the PR tour.

JACK: Normally, Aaron, we go where we like.

AARON COPLEY: Not here, actually. Ask Whitehall. We're fireproof.

JACK: Yeah. I had a bad experience with a politician recently. I tend not to listen
to Whitehall any more.

AARON COPLEY: Let me get someone to guide you back to your vehicle.

(Copley picks up the phone to make the call.)

CUT TO:

EXT. THE PHARM – FRONT DOOR – DAY

(Jack and Owen are escorted back to their parked SUV by two security guards.)

JACK: Was it me, or was he a little touchy?

(Jack’s wristband beeps.)

OWEN: Yeah, so much for the polite approach. We need to turn this place over.

(Jack and Owen get into the SUV. Jack’s wristband beeps again. He checks it.)

JACK: Oh, yeah. According to these readings this place has the highest
concentration of alien life forms this side of the Rift.

(A distance in front of them, Owen notes the fenced off building with added security
guards. Jack turns and notes the guns on the hips of the two securityguards with them.)

JACK: (to Owen) Grey is so not her color.

(Owen closes his window as the SUV leaves.)

CUT TO:

EXT. CARDIFF CITY (STOCK) – DAY

(Lovely top view down of the Torchwood area.)

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS – DAY

(Toshiko is working on hacking into The Pharm’s systems. She types in a security
code, the computer beeps, and ACCESS DENIED.)

(She turns and looks at Jack who is standing just behind her.)

TOSHIKO: I can't hack in there, Jack. And if I keep on trying with a brute-force
approach, they'll know they're under attack.

JACK: An alien life form is preying on the humans bloodstream. I need a way in
there.

IANTO: (o.s.) Tosh, I've got the results of that research.

(Ianto is at his work area. He presses a key.)

IANTO: On the screen now.

(The information appears on Toshiko’s monitor for tralsportaluk.co.uk. Jack returns
to look at the information as well.)

(The computer beeps and a list appears:
      OPPORTUNITIES FOR MEN AND WOMEN
      87956 – LONDON, ENGLAND
      83650 – MANCHESTER, ENGLAND
81772 – THE PHARM, SOUTH WALES
      83310c – LONDON, ENGLAND )

(The PHARM’s website appears.)

(Martha and Owen exit the autopsy area to join the others at the workstations.)

TOSHIKO: Ianto, that's brilliant! They're in the market for volunteers.

JACK: That's understandable, given their wastage rate.

GWEN: Then one of us goes in undercover.

JACK: No, we don't know enough about the workings of that place. Too many things
could go wrong.

MARTHA: Unless you were to put a medic in there. Someone who knew what to look for.

OWEN: Yeah, but I can't do it. They know me now don’t they.

MARTHA: I know it's hard to believe, Owen, but I wasn't thinking of you.

(Matha looks at Jack. Jack shakes his head.)

JACK: No way.

MARTHA: Come on, Jack, I've been in worse places and you know it.

(Jack thinks about it. Gwen waits. Owen shakes his head. Jack turns and looks at the
others. Martha waits.)

JACK: Okay.

CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB – BACK NEAR THE ARMORY

(Jack is walking through when Owen catches up with him.)

OWEN: Jack, can I have a word?

(Jack stops.)

OWEN: Listen, I know you're big buddies from way back whenever, but you can't just
send her in like this.

JACK: Trust me. She's more than capable. I'd rely on Martha if the world was
ending. (whispers) In fact, I did.

(He turns and leaves Owen looking puzzled.)

CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB – AUTOPSY AREA

(Martha is down in the autopsy area. Ianto hands her a file.)

IANTO: Okay, these are the plans for the Pharm's buildings. (Ianto takes out the
plans.) From what Jack and Owen saw, they reckon that the main house contains Copley's
office, medical research suites and the accommodation for the clinical trials subjects.

MARTHA: What about the buildings at the rear?

IANTO: Restricted area, fenced off, armed security. Jack thinks that's where the
readings of alien life forms came from.

MARTHA: Cool.

IANTO: But you don't need to go anywhere near there.

MARTHA: Spoilsport.

(She goes to her open kit, her back to Ianto.)

IANTO: The first thing you need to do is get yourself accepted as a clinical trials
subject. (Martha nods.) Don't try too hard, don't draw too much attention to yourself.

MARTHA: (amused) Be invisible. I can do that.

IANTO: Once you're in, we need you to gain access to the Pharm's IT systems, close
down the system firewalls and security protocols. That way Tosh can gain access to the
files and see what they're really up to.

(She closes her kit, picks it up and turns to Ianto.)

MARTHA: Industrial espionage. It's very civilized.

IANTO: Once you've done that, get out. Don't take any unnecessary risks.

MARTHA: Understood.

IANTO: Cool.

MARTHA: So, Jack asked me if I could get you a UNIT cap to wear.

IANTO: Did he? Well, red is my colour.

(Ianto takes his files and heads back up the steps.)

MARTHA: So am I right in thinking that you and he...?

(Ianto stops midway.)

IANTO: We ... dabble.

MARTHA: Yeah?

IANTO: Yeah.

MARTHA: So what's his dabbling like?

IANTO: Innovative.

MARTHA: Really?

IANTO: Bordering on the avant garde.

MARTHA: Wow.

IANTO: Oh, yeah. (lost in thought) Huh. So shall we get your cover story sorted?

(Ianto heads up the steps.)

MARTHA: Absolutely.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB – JACK’S OFFICE

(Ianto shows Martha the ID in the bag.

IANTO: Fake ID.

(She takes it and looks at it. Jack is sitting in the back while Toshiko waits her turn.)

IANTO: First name Samantha. Thought the Jones would be safe.

MARTHA: Okay. How do I stay in touch?

TOSHIKO: Communication's very tricky. The whole place could be wired. We don't want
you chattering away to us and being overheard.

JACK: But I want to monitor you at all times.

MARTHA: So?

(Toshiko holds out a case with contact lenses inside.)

MARTHA: I don't need contact lenses.

TOSHIKO: You need these.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. THE HUB -- WORKSTATIONS

MONITOR VIEW – Owen is on the monitor looking out at us.

OWEN: Okay?

(He steps out of camera view. PULL BACK to show Toshiko sitting in front of the monitor.
On the monitor, the view turns toward Jack and Toshiko’s back.)

(Martha’s hand breaks into the monitor view. Toshiko turns around.)

MARTHA: Oh, I'm a camera!

JACK: As Chris Isherwood once said to me when we were cruising the Kurfurstendamm.

(Owen rolls his eyes and shakes his head.)

(Toshiko types.)

TOSHIKO: And we ... can ... text.

(MARTHA’S POV – Text appears on the bottom: U LOOK WE C.)

MARTHA: Wow!

TOSHIKO: Power comes from the body heat, so they only work when you're wearing
them.

OWEN: (amused) Yeah, so you have to wear them everywhere.

MARTHA: Well, I'll be doing some things with my eyes shut, then.

(Owen smiles.)

JACK: In case of an emergency, we can speak directly to you.

TOSHIKO: The lens will communicate with your sensory neuroreceptors. Bypasses the auditory
system.

MARTHA: But can't these signals be intercepted?

IANTO: Alien technology. Which exploits a solution to the EPR paradox.

MARTHA: Oh, quantum entanglement of remote particles. Okay, cool.

IANTO: Yeah.

JACK: Did I mention she was brilliant?

FLASH TO:

EXT. THE PHARM (STOCK) -- DAY

(Isolated building at the base of the mountain hidden in the trees.)

INT. THE PHARM – EXAM ROOM – DAY

(Martha is in the exam room having her blood drawn by Plummer, the assistant.)

PLUMMER: It's standard procedure to take two blood tests. One of them will be
analysed overnight.

(Removes one vial and puts it in the bag held by the nurse nearby.)

PLUMMER: Thank you, Nurse.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS

(Toshiko, Jack, and Owen watch the Martha Cam on the monitor.)

PLUMMER: So tell us the places you've been to, Samantha.

MARTHA: Well, I had a great time in North America, France and Germany, Australia
...

(Toshiko types something.)

PLUMMER: What about the Third World? Africa, Latin America?

MARTHA VIEW: The flashing symbol appears: ! in a triangle.

(Martha backs off.)

MARTHA: No, but I'm sure I'll get round to it.

(Plummer picks up a clipboard a sits back down.)

PLUMMER: Travel off the beaten track can be a bit of a problem for us. If you had
some exotic tropical disease, there could be unexpected side effects, and volunteers
welfare is our absolute priority.

MARTHA: Oh I don't think there'll be any problem with that. And of course I'm very
conscious of health issues.

(MARTHA VIEW: Another flashing ! in a triangle appears.)

(Martha looks at Plummer.)

(The door opens and Aaron Copley walks in. Plummer introduces him.)

MARTHA: My mum's a nurse.

PLUMMER: This is Professor Copley, Samantha. Institute Director.

AARON COPLEY: Hi, Sam. Nice to meet you.

(Toshiko types: GET CLOSE TO COPLEY.)

MARTHA: Hello.

JACK: (to Toshiko) Tell her to get close to Copley.

AARON COPLEY: I see you're a postgraduate student at the moment.

MARTHA: That's right.

AARON COPLEY: Studying what?

MARTHA: Creative writing. (Copley and Plummer exchange looks.) So I really need the
cash.

AARON COPLEY: Well I'm sure you'll understand, Samantha, that we have a lot of
applicants.

(Copley backs off.)

JACK: (to Toshiko) Tell her not to lose him.

(Toshiko types: DON’T LOSE HIM.)

AARON COPLEY: We'll let you know in due course.

(Copley turns to leave. Martha sits up.)

MARTHA: Actually, there's something I should have told you.

(Copley turns back.)

AARON COPLEY: Oh, yes?

MARTHA: It'll show up in the test results anyway.

(Toshiko types: ???)

MARTHA: I did have a hepatitis infection.

(Jack, Owen and Toshiko watch and wait.)

OWEN: No, no, no, she's bullshitting. It's her way in.

MARTHA: I mean, I'm fine now, but it stays in the blood. Strictly speaking, it's
incurable, right?

AARON COPLEY: Well, that puts a different complexion on things. We could use a
subject with hepatitis. Are you available to start right now?

MARTHA: Well, sure. (grabs her bag) I've brought my overnight things.

AARON COPLEY: Then all we need is your signature on this confidentiality agreement.

(Copely leads Martha to the desk.)

(Owen, Jack and Toshiko watch as Copely puts the agreement down on the desk for Martha to
sign.)

OWEN: She's in.

JACK: As Chris Isherwood also said, it's not the getting in, it's the getting out.

(Martha signs the forms.)

AARON COPLEY: Thank you.

MARTHA: So what sort of drugs will you want me to take?

AARON COPLEY: We have got various products at the clinical trials stage. You'll be
given a full briefing once we've finalized the program, and of course we won't proceed
unless we have your informed consent.

(Martha smiles at him. She turns and looks at Plummer who motions for her to go ahead.
Plummer looks at Copely as they head out of the room.)

JACK: Come on, Martha.

(On the Martha Cam, they watch as Martha passes by a door marked ADMINISTRATION.)

OWEN: Let her settle in. It's gonna be a long night ahead.

CUT TO:

EXT. CARDIFF CITY LIGHTS (STOCK) – NIGHT

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS – NIGHT

(Owen sits at the workstation while Toshiko brings him a cup of coffee.)

TOSHIKO: You and Martha are getting on well.

OWEN: Yeah, you know me – Mr. Sociable.

(Owen has Martha’s UNIT badge with photo up on the monitor.)

TOSHIKO: She's beautiful.

OWEN: Is she?

TOSHIKO: You know she is.

OWEN: Yes, well, fair cop.

TOSHIKO: And a doctor. Perfect match.

OWEN: No, she's only interested in work.

TOSHIKO: Do you think?

OWEN: Yeah, a bit of flirting so I'll show her the ropes. Plus, if I tried anything
with her, I think Jack would have my kneecaps. (Toshiko turns to her workstation.) What
happened to that, um, pool tournament you were organizing?

TOSHIKO: That? It was never a tournament.

OWEN: What was all that about, then?

TOSHIKO: It was supposed to be a date.

OWEN: Sorry?

TOSHIKO: I was asking you out on a date.

OWEN: A ... a date?

TOSHIKO: You didn't realize?

OWEN: You and me?

TOSHIKO: Yeah.

OWEN: I see. And ... you still want that?

TOSHIKO: Yeah.

OWEN: Right.

TOSHIKO: I just thought if we spent some time together, an evening ...

OWEN: All right.

TOSHIKO: Sorry?

OWEN: Just do it.

TOSHIKO: Are you being sarcastic?

OWEN: No.

TOSHIKO: You're being polite. You'll stand me up.

OWEN: No, I've just said yes, haven't I? Look, one date, see how it goes, which
might be nowhere.

TOSHIKO: That's fine. A drink.

OWEN: Okay.

TOSHIKO: Yeah.

OWEN: And I'm going to keep flirting with people, okay? Just cos of this, doesn't
mean I'm going to stop flirting.

TOSHIKO: You can be king of flirts.

OWEN: Okay. Right, then.

TOSHIKO: Yeah.

OWEN: Good. We should, er ... concentrate on Martha.

TOSHIKO: Yeah.

CUT TO:

INT. THE PHARM – MARTH’S ROOM – NIGHT

(Martha is lying on the bed. She looks at her watch, then gets up.)

(She goes to the door and opens it quietly.

INT. THE PHARM – CORRIDOR – CONTINUOUS

(She slips out into the corridor.)

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS – NIGHT

(The Martha Cam is on the move. Owen and Toshiko watch.)

(Martha reaches the first intersection and continues. She looks down the steps.)

(Owen is typing: BE CAREFUL.)

(Martha sees the emergency exit door. She starts down the stairs.)

(Jack joins Toshiko and Owen.)

(Martha reaches the floor below. She continues through the hallways.)

(Everyone watches and waits.)

(Martha reaches the door to ADMINISTRATION.)

(She tries it and finds it locked. She notes the security pad on the wall.)

OWEN: Tosh, can you get us past this?

TOSHIKO: Easy peasy.

(Toshiko goes to her keyboard and starts typing: LOOK CLOSER.)

TOSHIKO: She just needs to get the lenses to within the EPR field.

(Toshiko runs the program to unlock the door. As the combination appears, Martha punches
in the code.)

(She punches in the first number: 4.)

(Suddenly, she hears heavy footsteps approaching.)

(ZOOM BACKWARD through the corridor to the base of the stairs. A security guard steps down
into the hallway. He’s carrying a flashlight. A second security guard is with him.)

(Martha waits. Three more numbers in the combination appear: 1-0-4.)

(Marth punches them into the keypad.)

(The footsteps are getting closer. Martha turns and sees the light from the flashlight on
the walls at the end of the hallway.)

(On the monitor, the security pad appears on the Martha Cam.)

(They wait for the last number.)

(Finally, the computer chirps and the last number appears: 0.)

(Martha quickly enters the last number in and slips inside Administration. She closes the
door just as the security guards appear at the end of the hallway.)

(They wait.)

(The security guards leave.)

INT. THE PHARM – ADMINISTRATION – NIGHT

(Martha goes to the desk and tries the computer. The PHARM menu reads:
      ACCOUNTS
      ADMIN
      BACKUP FILES
      CLINICAL TRIALS
      CORE SECURITY
      EFFECTIVE DATA
      ELA PENDING
      LOG FILES
      MANAGEMENT.)

(Martha clicks. A login pop-up appears. Martha sits down.)

OWEN: Tosh, can you help her blag her way into the computer system?

TOSHIKO: It'll take time to talk her through it.

JACK: No, we don't have time. I want her out of that office.

(Gwen walks over and joins them.)

TOSHIKO: Well, if I can get her to give me remote control of the computer...

(Toshiko types: GO TO NETWORK.)

(Martha gets out of the login and clicks on the network.)

(Toshiko gives additional instructions: FIREWALL.)

(Martha clicks.)

(Additional instrucitons read: PROXY CONNECTIONS.)

(Toshiko instructs; Martha types. The computer beeps. Martha clicks ENTER on the login.)

(Toshiko types: I HAVE CONTROL.)

TOSHIKO: ... I have control.

(Martha releases the mouse and Toshiko has access to the computer.)

(Images of the mayfly parasite appear ont he monitor.)

MARTHA: The life cycle of the parasite. They call it the Mayfly.

(At the hub, everyone watches the monitor.)

GWEN: Wow. We've never seen a species like that before.

TOSHIKO: It's beautiful.

OWEN: It's lethal.

JACK: But what is Copley doing with them?

(Martha is still sitting at the desk in front of the computer.)

JACK: (over comm) Martha, now we've got control, we can download all of this and go
through it here. Get out of there pronto.

(Martha opens the door and checks the hallway. It appears to be clear.)

(In the hub, Gwen is at her workstation computer.)

GWEN: Tosh, do you have that code-breaker software?

TOSHIKO: I'm sending the patch through now.

GWEN: Thank you.

(Gwen enters a USER ID. From the menu, she selects CLINICAL TRIALS, then COVERT. The menu
reads:
      SABRETEX
      STEMLOX
      NUCLORG
      COLOGENIX
      REDLITE
      RESET
      PARADIGM
      CARTLEX
      SYNAPSIX
      CANNICET
      INVOCAINE ... )

(The photos and names of the SUBJECTS appear. Such as: CRAIG DELLOWAY, STEVEN MALCOLM,
JONATHAN SALISBURY.)

INT. THE PHARM – STAIRS – NIGHT

(Martha makes her way up the dark stairs. She reaches the door, stops and looks through
the glass. Suddenly ...

PLUMMER: (overhead) Break out in Zone A. All patrols to Zone A immediately.

INT. THE HUB – NIGHT

(Owen and Jack watch and wait.)

INT. THE PHARM – STAIRS – NIGHT

(The alarm blares. Red lights flash.)

PLUMMER: (overhead) Breakout in Zone A. Break out in Zone A. All patrols proceed
with extreme caution. The escaped creature is extremely dangerous.

(Martha goes to the window and looks outside. She sees the security guards rushing past
the window below.)

(Owen types: GET TO SAFETY.)

(The security guards split up into two groupd and head off in different directions. Martha
heads back for the stairs. Midway, she stops, goes to the nearby window, opens it and
climbs out.)

INT. THE HUB -- WORKSTATIONS

(Gwen is on the computer.)

GWEN: Jack? I've got the list of the clinical trials subjects here.

(Jack looks over her shoulder and reads the names on the list as Gwen scrolls.)

JACK: Meredith Roberts, Marie Thomas, Barry Leonard. All the murder victims. Ooh,
who's BD?

(On the bottom reads: EXECUTIVE ACTION: BD.)

(Gwen shakes her head. Sh pulls up some information on a security guard:
      NAME: BILLY DAVIS
      SECURITY RATING: ULTRA
      CLEARED FOR EXECUTIVE ACTION.)

GWEN: Executive actions?

JACK: Old CIA terminology for assassinations. The Pharm are running their own hit
man, which is kind of unusual for a medical research facility.

GWEN: Wait a minute, there's a name here that we haven't seen before. Elin Morgan?
She hasn't been reported missing or dead.

JACK: She soon will be. Take Ianto and pull her in.

EXT. THE PHARM – SECTION 12 -- NIGHT

(Martha climbs down the drain pipe, drops to the ground and dusts her hands. The alarms
continue to blare. She starts hurrying along the path to the side of the building. She
stops in front of the wire gate and key pad lock.)

GUARD: (o.s.) We’re at section 12 -- find it before it gets any further.

(Martha hears voices and approaching footsteps. She sees the flashlights around the bend.
She runs and ducks behind the nearby bush.)

GUARD 2: (o.s.) Down here, lads. Come on. Accessing Section 12 now, boss.

(A group of security guards approaches the gate. The lead guard pulls the keycard through
the security pad and opens the gate.)

PLUMMER: (from radio) Do not attempt to approach the creature, is that understood?
Stun and sedate only, the creature is highly dangerous.

(The group of security guards hurries through the open gate.)

GUARD 2: Understood. Come on, keep moving!

(They hurry inside. Before the gate swings shut, Martha runs inside.)

GUARD 2: (o.s.) You, left. You, right.

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS

(Owen and Jack are watching the monitor.)

OWEN: What the hell is she doing? If the Pharm have their own hit man, God knows
what they're capable of.

JACK: Yeah, and I put her in there.

EXT. THE PHARM – ZONE A -- NIGHT

(Martha is running inside the gated complex. She stops near the trash bins. Something
growls and clicks behind her. Martha turns around.)

FLASH!

(A blinding white light.)

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS

(They lose Martha’s signal.)

OWEN: Shit!

JACK: What was that?

TOSHIKO: Radiation surge? We've lost her signal!

EXT. THE PHARM – ZONE A -- NIGHT

(Martha’s eyes hurt.)

MARTHA: Agh! Ah!

(She’s on her knees on the ground and removes the contact lenses, tossing them.)

MARTHA: Agh!

(She hears the creature growl. She looks up and sees a fully mature Mayfly turn the
corner. The thing is huge! It’s the size of an adult human. It heads toward Martha.
Martha starts to back away from it, but she’s on the ground and can’t move fast
enough.)

(She gets to her feet and runs toward the trash bins. The group of guards turn the corner
behind the Mayfly.)

GUARD: There it is! Call patrol. Creature located. Zone A, section 12.

(The Mayfly moves past Martha and appears to enter the building. As she watches the
Mayfly, Martha steps out from behind the trash bins and into view. She turns to look at
the guards. One of the guards fires a tranquilizer dart at her. It hits her in the neck.)

(Martha falls to the ground.)

(The guards run past her.)

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS

(Toshiko presses some keys on the keyboard.)

TOSHIKO: I can't get her back.

OWEN: We have to get her out of there.

TOSHIKO: That place is swamped in security. If we try and steam in, we'll be
putting her at risk!

OWEN: We can't leave her there can we?

TOSHIKO: If I can't get her signal back in thirty minutes, then we think of
alternatives.

OWEN: Anything could be happening to her in there.

JACK: Martha can handle herself. She's been in worse situations than this.

OWEN: Sure about that?

CUT TO:

EXT. CARDIFF CITY LIGHTS (STOCK) -- NIGHT

(View of the city. ZOOM down to FOCUS on the Torchwood SUV on the road.)

INT. TORCHWOOD SUV (TRAVELING) – NIGHT

(Ianto is driving. Gwen is punching in something into the GPS system.)

IANTO: What's that?

(A section on the map blinks.)

GWEN: Billy Davis' mobile. He'll be at Elin's flat in three minutes.

(Ianto steps on the gas. The SUV speeds up as it takes the turn, tires screeching.)

CUT TO:

INT. MORGAN RESIDENCE – BEDROOM -- NIGHT

(The bedroom door creaks open. Billy Davis steps inside. He’s holding a syringe. Elin
Morgan is asleep on her bed. The door swings closed, but doesn’t shut completely. The
door remains ajar.)

(Billy Davis approaches the bed with the syringe. He sits down gently on the bed, but
it’s enough to stir Elin. She wakes up. He quickly sprays her in the face, paralyzing
her.)

(Billy takes the syringe and squirts it. He pries her lids open and holds it open with his
left hand. He moves in closer to inject her when ...

(The door bursts open and Gwen steps in with her gun pointed at him.)

GWEN: Hands above your head! (He holds up his hands.) Up!

(Billy stands up. Gwen takes the syringe from him. Ianto steps into the room and up to
him. He zaps him with the stun gun.)

(Billy falls backward onto the bed, unconscious. Gwen turns to check on Elin while Ianto
reports.)

IANTO: (to comm) Jack, we've got Billy Davis. He could help get you into the Pharm.

CUT TO:

INT. THE PHARM – EXAM ROOM – NIGHT

(Martha is restrained onto the exam table. Her wrists are bound straight out away from her
body. She wakes up and struggles with her bindings.)

(There’s a guard carrying a gun standing watch nearby. The door opens and Aaron
Copley walks in.)

MARTHA: Will you tell this gorilla to let me go?! What is going on?!

AARON COPLEY: (to the guard) Good work.

(The guard leaves. Copley and Plummer approach Martha.)

MARTHA: (indignant) I’m here as a clinical volunteer. You can't treat me like
this!

AARON COPLEY: You lied to us, Samantha.

(He removes his jacket and puts his lab coat on.)

MARTHA: Can I just explain? I got bored stuck in that room, so I went for a walk,
and first that thing attacked me, and then your heavies assaulted me.

AARON COPLEY: You don't owe any loyalty to Torchwood. Jack Harkness has treated you
in a criminally irresponsible way.

MARTHA: Who? (She looks at Plummer.) I really don't understand!

AARON COPLEY: Don't bother. This is not an interrogation. Torchwood is irrelevant
to us, not even a nuisance. In fact, they've done us quite a favor putting you in here.
(He sits on the stool next to the table.) We've analyzed your test results - you really
are something special.

INT. THE HUB – CELLS

(Billy Davis is strapped to the chair. He groans. Owen and Jack are there with him.)

BILLY DAVIS: Agh! I got terrible guts, dunno what it is.

JACK: Bad conscience, Billy. Try confessing.

BILLY DAVIS: Get stuffed.

JACK: Okay, let's do it the hard way.

The door behind them opens. Ianto and a chained weevil enter the room. The weevil growls
and heads toward Billy, who is defenseless and tied to the chair.)

BILLY DAVIS: Merciful Christ! What the ... ? (He screams) Agh-hhh!

(The weevil runs toward Billy. It runs out of chain and stops mere inches in front of his
face. It growls and bares its teeth.)

JACK: They have a tendency to act up.

IANTO: Losing him!

BILLY DAVIS: Please!

JACK: Something to say, Billy?

BILLY DAVIS: Yeah, yeah, whatever you want, just get it away from me! Get it off
me!

(Ianto uses the face spray on the weevil and forces it away from Billy. The weevil and
Ianto head back to the cell. Ianto closes the cell door.)

JACK: Okay, Billy, you've been on a killing spree, why?

BILLY DAVIS: I work for the Pharm! They'd been giving people this Reset drug. But
there were these side effects - parasites or something. They were gonna die anyway, so I
had to get rid of them before any weird symptoms showed up ... in public.

INT. THE PHARM – EXAM ROOM – NIGHT

(Copley has an image up on the monitor.)

AARON COPLEY: Do you know what lymphocytes are, Samantha?

MARTHA: A kind of white blood cell, part of the immune system.

(Plummer opens a thick metal case.)

PLUMMER: Well, your lymphocytes are really quite extraordinary.

AARON COPLEY: We've never seen anything like them before, not in a human being.
Aliens are a different matter.

MARTHA: (disbelief) Aliens? I don't know what you're talking about.

(Plummer takes out an IV bag with pink liquid.)

PLUMMER: Your lymphocytes and God knows what other cells have mutated.

MARTHA: Mutated? How?

AARON COPLEY: Under the influence of radiation. Radiation that's not found in the
temporally stable environments on Earth.

(Plummer hangs the IV bag with RESET.)

MARTHA: I don't know what that means.

(Plummer takes out the IV tubing and puts it together.)

AARON COPLEY: We've dealt with aliens before, but we have never come across
anything as exotic as you. A human being who's travelled in time and space. Tell me about
it. (He sits down on the stool.) How is that possible? What did you see out there?

MARTHA: This is mad. I don't know what you mean.

AARON COPLEY: Fine. If that's the way you want to play it. However it happened, it
means you have a uniquely effective immune system, which is exactly what we need. We're
developing a drug that's going to change the world, Sam. Incurable cancers, AIDS - all the
scourges of the human race wiped out. A revolution in medicine and social welfare. Except
it's still imperfect. (Plummer inserts the IV tube into the bag.) I'd like to know what
your funky lymphatic system makes of those imperfections.

MARTHA: (yells) I am not taking that!

(Plummer inserts the tubing into Martha’s prepped arm.)

AARON COPLEY: But you volunteered.

(Plummer squeezes the IV bag and the drips starts.)

INT. THE HUB – CELLS

(Jack questions Billy.)

JACK: Okay, Billy, we're going into the Pharm and you're going to front it for us.

BILLY DAVIS: (nods) Yeah, yeah. Okay. My stomach! My stomach! My stomach! (He tilts
his head back and gasps for breath. Jack and Owen don’t know what to make of it) Agh!
Agh!

(Blood spurts out of Billy’s mouth. This isn’t good.)

OWEN: Whoa!

(Billy starts convulsing. Jack holds Billy’s head to steady him.)

JACK: Owen, we need him alive!

(Owen turns to grab a useful apparatus off the tray of instruments.)

OWEN: Yeah, all right, I'm flying blind here, Jack!

JACK: Do something!

(Ianto watches from the other end of the room.)

(Owen picks up the singularity scalpel.)

OWEN: Let's start with this.

(Billy gags, choking on his own blood. Owen powers it up and aims it at Billy’s
stomach. He starts turning the knob on the side.)

OWEN: Okay. I think-I think I've got it, okay? (The Mayfly image appears on the
scalpel’s monitor.) I've got the calibrations right. I can get it out of him.

(Billy continues to convulse, his mouth covered with blood. The scalpel powers up –

SPLAT!

(The mayfly inside Billy bursts out of his chest. Blood and guts spatter on Owen and even
on Ianto standing way behind him.

OWEN & IANTO: Whoa!

(What a mess!)

JACK: God!

(Jack points to the Mayfly on the floor.)

JACK: Owen, deal with it.

(Owen puts the singularity scalpel down and gets some large salad tongs.)

JACK: Are you sure you had those calibrations right?

OWEN: I'm sorry, all right?

(Owen picks up the large Mayfly and looks at it.)

OWEN: He must have breathed in larva when one of his victims died. This could have
been me, or Martha.

(Owen puts the Mayfly in the bucket.)

INT. THE PHARM – EXAM ROOM – NIGHT

(Two IV bags of RESET hang on the IV stand. Both bags are nearly empty. Martha’s eyes
are closed and she twitches. Her body is covered with a light sheen of sweat.)

PLUMMER: I've given her twice the critical dose.

AARON COPLEY: So, Mayfly larvae are incubating?

PLUMMER: (unsure) Are you sure about this? Her immune system's clearly reacting.
There's obviously quite a fight going on inside her.

(Plummer removes an empty IV bag off the stand.)

AARON COPLEY: Keep your nerve. We're making history.

INT. THE HUB – WORKSTATIONS – NIGHT

(Ianto exits the back. Toshiko is at her workstation.)

TOSHIKO: Ianto, what have you done with Billy Davis' body?

IANTO: Um, I was just about to dispose of it. Why?

TOSHIKO: I've thought of a way we can use him to get us into the Pharm.

(OFF TOSHIKO: She looks at the monitor and types on the keyboard. The computer beeps.
Toshiko smiles proudly. She turns and looks at Ianto who has a mixed look of horror and
disbelief on his face.)

TOSHIKO: (smiles) Clever, huh?

IANTO: Oh, you are warped on the inside. How do you think of these things?

(Ianto leaves.)

TOSHIKO: I'll take that as a compliment.

CUT TO:

EXT. CARDIFF CITY LIGHTS (STOCK) – NIGHT

(QUICK ZOOM.)

EXT. ROAD TO THE PHARM -- NIGHT

(Billy’s vehicle approaches the security gate. Jack and the others are huddled down
low in the back. Billy sits behind the steering wheel and appears to be driving.)

(The vehicle pulls up to the security gate. The security guard looks at Billy through the
partially raised window. He nods.)

(The vehicle continues past the gate and into the Pharm. The gate arm closes behind them.)

INT. VEHICLE (TRAVELING)

(REVEAL: Billy’s hands are taped firmly to the steering wheel. Toshiko is driving the
vehicle with her computer hook-up complete with laptop monitor and steering wheel add-on.)

(They approach the main Pharm building.)

(The vehicle stops at the front. Billy’s dead forehead hits the steering wheel with a
thud. The back door opens. Jack, Toshiko, Owen, Gwen and Ianto exit the vehicle.)

JACK: Tosh, Gwen, Ianto, check out Zone A. We're going after Martha. Let's go!

(Jack and Owen run toward the building.)

EXT. THE PHARM – ZONE A – NIGHT – CONTINUOUS

(Gwen, Ianto and Toshiko reach the wire gate at Zone A. Toshiko uses her hand-held and
cracks it while Ianto covers them. She enters the security code. The gate unlocks.)

(Gwen opens the gate and they enter Zone A. Ianto covers them from behind.)

INT. THE PHARM – EXAM ROOM – NIGHT

(Copley looks at a single mayfly on the monitor. Martha is still strapped to the table,
gasping and incoherent.)

(The door bursts open. Jack enters with his gun out. Owen is behind him.)

JACK: Hands above your head!

(Copley turns around and puts his hands up. Owen moves to the side and takes his backpack
off.)

JACK: What have you done to her?

(Owen notices the IV drip.)

OWEN: Tell me that's not Reset!

AARON COPLEY: She's survived the larval stage, the only subject ever to do so.
(Owen checks Martha’s pulse.) Fascinating. (He turns and types something on the
monitor and moves quickly as he checks Martha.) Turns out these bugs practice sibling
cannibalism. Only the strongest individual is left now. God knows what happens next.

OWEN: Put a stop to this!

AARON COPLEY: I can't. (Jack raises his gun.) (to Jack) I don't know how.

(Martha gasps and doesn’t look good.)

EXT. THE PHARM – ZONE A – BUILDING – NIGHT

(Toshiko opens the door. Gwen steps into the building, her gun out. Toshiko follows her
with her gun out. Ianto covers them from behind.)

INT. THE PHARM – ZONE A BUILDING – NIGHT

(Gwen and Toshiko walk through the large building. Plummer is at one of the containers.
She leans forward and removes the tube from a jar filled with pink liquid RESET. She picks
up an empty jar presumably to replace it with.)

(Gwen and Toshiko maneuver silently closer toward Plummer.)

GWEN: Put your hands above your head!

(Plummer puts the jar down and puts her hands up.)

(Toshiko moves forward and is distracted by what is in the large container.)

TOSHIKO: Ianto.

IANTO: Bloody hell.

FLASH TO:

INT. THE PHARM – EXAM ROOM – NIGHT

(Martha is on the table. The mayfly in her tummy is moving; her tummy gurgles. Owen
watches helplessly.)

OWEN: Jack, this thing's killing her. I don't know what I can do.

(Owen looks away as he thinks.)

JACK: Owen, stay calm, there has gotta be something.

(Owen looks down at his bag and looks at the singularity scalpel.)

CUT TO:

INT. THE PHARM – ZONE A BUILDING – NIGHT

(There’s a weevil int he canister, hooked up to various tubings in its chest. The
weevil groans weakly.)

(Plummer puts her hands down slowly.)

GWEN: What's happening here?

PLUMMER: This is what the Pharm is all about. We farm captive aliens for the exotic
chemical products they metabolize.

IANTO: What the hell do you get from a weevil?

PLUMMER: Some pesticides, and a quite powerful chemical defoliant.

(She turns and walks toward another canister.)

PLUMMER: But the weevils aren't what's going to clinch the Nobel for us. The
Mayfly, our feedstock for Reset. Given time, we'll tweak the product for human use, and
then it'll be bigger than penicillin.

(Inside the canister is the large Mayfly. It’s alive and moves weakly in its confined
space. It groans. Gwen looks at it through the glass.)

IANTO: (softly to comm) Jack, I can give you a report on Zone A. (He turns and
walks away.) They're holding dozens of creatures. They seem to be using them as test
subjects.

(Gwen continues to look direcly at the Mayfly through the glass container as she tries to
connect with it. She tilts her head to the right, the Mayfly also tilts its head,
mirroring her movement. She straightens her head quickly. It also straightens its head
quickly. This is a sentient being.)

(Gwen puts her hand out to touch the glass, then pulls back as the Mayfly thumps the glass
with its leg from the inside.)

(HOLD on Gwen.)

INT. THE PHARM – EXAM ROOM – NIGHT

(Jack ends his communication with Ianto.)

JACK: (to comm) Understood, Ianto. Tell Tosh to go for total shutdown. (to Copley)
This place is a torture chamber.

AARON COPLEY: I don't need to debate medical ethics with you.

JACK: You abused the Mayflies, you turned them into parasites!

(As they talk, Owen prepares a syringe.)

AARON COPLEY: We didn't understand how the Mayflies reproduced. We tried to limit
the damage.

JACK: What, by murdering people?

AARON COPLEY: They were going to die anyway. We're on the edge of the greatest
discovery in history. It’s gotta be worth a few sacrifices! (Owen injects Martha.)
You must understand that, Jack, you're involved in alien research.

JACK: Not like this.

(Copley doesn’t care.)

JACK: I'm closing this place down.

AARON COPLEY: In your dreams. This is a state of the art, official facility.

JACK: Oh, I'm not going to do it by sending a memo. We're in control of your IT
systems. As we speak, we're crashing your data banks, wiping your records.

AARON COPLEY: That's cyber terrorism!

JACK: And that's just for starters. We're going to trip the systems of your fire,
radiation and biohazard safety networks. (Owen takes out the singularity scalpel and turns
the knobs as he calibrates it to Martha.) The power will cut, sprinklers will be
activated, and a large part of this facility will be sealed and flooded with inert gases.

AARON COPLEY: The aliens will die.

JACK: They're already dying. This way they'll be put out of their misery.

AARON COPLEY: For God's sake, we're on the same side!

JACK: No. Combating hostile aliens is one thing, but this is slavery, exploitation,
a war crime!

OWEN: Jack, I need your help!

(Martha convulses. Owen continues to fiddle with the knobs on the scalpel. Jack rushes
over to hold Martha steady. Only now does he see Owen with the scalpel.)

JACK: What the hell are you doing to her?!

(Copley takes the opportunity and slips out of the room unnoticed.)

OWEN: This is the only way we'll save Martha. I think I understand how it works.

JACK: You'd better be sure because it's never worked before. (The mayfly appears on
the scalpel’s monitor.) Owen, are you sure it's safe?

OWEN: Okay, Jack!

(Jack lets Martha go. She writhes around in pain.)

JACK: Owen, tell me you're sure! You could kill her with that thing!

(Owen concentrates.)

JACK: We're losing her!

(Owen zaps and the mayfly image on the scalpel’s monitor vanishes as it’s
obliterated from the inside.)

(Martha surges upward.)

MARTHA: Ah!

(The monitor flatlines.)

(Martha falls back down hard on the table with a thud. She’s out cold.)

JACK: What have you done?

(Owen looks at Jack.)

(Martha coughs. Owen closes his eyes and breathes with relief. The monitor starts beeping
steadily again.)

OWEN: Oh, bloody hell, it worked. Thank God for that.

(Jack helps Martha up. Owen gets his things.)

JACK: (to Owen) Let's get her out of here.

(They head for the door. Owen puts his jacket on Martha and helps her as they leave.)

EXT. THE PHARM – FRONT – NIGHT

(Ianto is outside in the front. Gwen has her gun on Plummer as they walk outside. Toshiko
is working on her laptop as she heads out with the others. In the background, there are
voices of the other workers who are being rounded up as they prepare to close the Pharm.)

(Jack heads for the front door. Owen and Martha follow behind him. Owen has Martha’s
arm around his shoulders.)

OWEN: I am prescribing rest and recuperation for you, madam, and a few days in bed,
preferably under my supervision.

MARTHA: Owen, I don't know how to break this to you - I've got a boyfriend.

OWEN: Yeah, but has he saved your life like I did?

(They step outside. Owen removes Martha’s arm from around his shoulders.)

MARTHA: Um, yes, actually.

OWEN: Oh.

(Gwen pushes Plummer toward the back of the vehicle.)

GWEN: Arms up on there.

(She frists Plummer.)

(Jack looks at Toshiko.)

JACK: Do it.

(Toshiko starts the program. AREA LOCKED.)

PLUMMER’S VOICE: (from overhead) Facility shut down in progress.

(Inside the containment building, the lights go out.)

PLUMMER’S VOICE: (from overhead) All personnel must evacuate immediately.

(Inside the exam room, the lights go out.)

(ON WEEVIL: The lights in the building go out.)

(The lights go out. The lights on the MAYFLY go out.)

PLUMMER’S VOICE: (from overhead) Facility shut down in progress. All personnel
must evacuate immediately.

(Toshiko finishes locking down the facility. Jack turns to the others.)

JACK: Okay, let's go!

(Everyone starts toward the vehicle. Since Owen and Martha were the last out, they’re
the closest to Copley who just now appears, his gun out and pointed at Martha.)

AARON COPLEY: (to Martha) Did you really think I was going to let you just walk
away? (Owen closes the vehicle door and steps in front of Martha.) You've ruined
everything I've worked for.

OWEN: Now, let's not be stupid. Okay?

(Gwen has her gun out and pointed at Copley. Jack steps out into view.)

OWEN: We're both rational men, scientists.

(Owen slowly moves closer toward Copley.)

OWEN: I know you don't want to shoot.

BANG!

(Copley shoots Owen in the chest. At that close range, Owen goes down hard. Ianto is
startled. Toshiko gasps with horror. The empty shell casing clinks on the concrete.)

(Owen gasps for breath.)

(Jack raises his gun and points it at Copley.)

AARON COPLEY: (to Martha) You're next!

(Copley has his gun on Martha.)

BANG!

(Jack fires, the bullet hitting Copley dead center in his forehead. Copley drops his gun
and falls backward.)

(Toshiko starts forward toward Owen. Martha drops

MARTHA: Owen! Can you hear me, Owen?!

TOSHIKO: (to Martha) You've got to help him!

(Martha gets up to get a syringe.)

JACK: Owen, stay with me. Owen. Owen, look at me, look at me. Owen, look right at
me. Stay with me, Owen, stay with me. Stay with me, buddy. Come on. Come on.

(She injects Owen in the chest.)

MARTHA: Owen, speak to me!

(Owen’s harsh breathing subsides. He blinks a couple of times and stops moving.
Everyone waits. But Owen just stops moving.)

(Martha checks for a pulse.)

(She looks at Jack.)

MARTHA: He's dead.

(Jack looks up at the others. Gwen is stunned. Toshiko watches with disbelief. It happened
too fast.)

JACK: (whispers) Owen ...

(TOP VIEW DOWN on Owen’s body and those who surround him. PULL BACK and ...

FADE OUT.
