[INTRODUCTION]

JACK HARKNESS: (v.o.) Torchwood. Outside the Government, beyond the police. Tracking down
alien life on Earth and arming the human race against the future. The 21st century is when
everything changes, and you've got to be ready.

[Scenes from 1X12: Captain Jack Harkness]

(Bilis Manger takes the TORCHWOOD file folder out of the desk.)

BILIS MANGER: I’m Bilis, the manager.

(Cut to: Gwen turns around.)

IANTO: (v.o.) Get out, Gwen! It’s a trap!

(Owen reaches into the machine to put in the final piece. Ianto holds the gun on him. He
fires and shoots Owen in the back of his shoulder.)

(The machine powers up and starts to pulse.)

IANTO: (v.o.) Open the rift now and the whole world could suffer!

INT. GWEN’S FLAT – BEDROOM -- DAY

(The bedroom curtains are closed. Gwen is in bed watching Rhys sleep.)

RHYS: (with eyes closed) You know it's rude to stare.

(Gwen giggles. Rhys turns to look at her.)

GWEN: I thought telepathy would get you to make me a cuppa.

RHYS: What's it worth?

GWEN: What do you want?

RHYS: I'll draw you a diagram, shall I?

(They kiss. Rhys gets out of bed.)

GWEN: Nice arse!

(Rhys pauses in the doorway and slaps the rhythm to "Shave and a Hair Cut" on
his ass cheeks. Gwen laughs. He leaves the room.)

(Gwen’s phone rings. She reaches for it.)

RHYS: (o.s.) Don't answer it!

(Gwen giggles and answers her phone.)

GWEN: (to phone) Yep?

JACK: (from phone) You watching the news?

CUT TO:

INT. GWEN’S FLAT – LIVING ROOM – DAY

(Gwen is in her robe watching the television while Rhys is in the kitchen getting the
coffee.)

NEWS REPORTER: (from tv) There's speculation that the incidents overnight may be
linked. Initial reports suggested terrorist involvement.

(Gwen glances at Rhys, then turns her attention back to the news report.)

NEWS REPORTER: (from tv) But this morning, some intelligence experts have claimed
the incidents may be a stunt. The first sightings were of UFOs over the Taj Mahal in
India.

(On the monitor, they show large UFOs hovering near the Taj Mahal.)

NEWS REPORTER: (from tv) They came in just after midnight.

(Streaming captions on the bottom of the screen read:
* Beatles on the roof of Abbey Road studios
* Fears of guillotine appearance in Paris
* Samurai warrior on the rampage in Tokyo subway system.)

(On the monitor are scenes of people screaming and a police shootout on the steps of a
building with soldiers in historic uniform and carrying ancient weapons.)

NEWS REPORTER: (from tv) In London this morning, there were ports of men in
historic dress firing upon police. Some religious groups are claiming events overnight are
a vindication of their teachings.

(Rhys is in his robe and sitting on the couch, staring at the television.)

RHYS: Do you think it is terrorists?

GWEN: Terrorists bomb things. This is different.

(On the monitor, they interview two people.)

WOMAN: (from tv) People didn't believe us. Now they should. Judgment Day is finally
here. This is the End of Days.

(We hold on Gwen and Rhys.)

FADE IN:

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS -- DAY

(Ianto is reading from the Bible.)

IANTO: (reading) "And I heard but did not understand and I said, 'Master, what
is the End of all these things?' And he said, " 'Go, Daniel, for the things are
closed up and sealed until the end of time.' " Daniel 12, verse 10.

(Gwen sits at her workstation.)

GWEN: Sounds a bit close for comfort.

(Owen is in the foreground near the tank with the hand in it.)

OWEN: This machine's on the blink. Keeps losing power.

(Owen holds his injured shoulder and heads up the stairs to the workstations where Ianto
is. Ianto closes the Bible.)

OWEN: Sorry, don't let me stop your portents of doom. Or have you finished?

(Ianto puts the Bible aside. Owen sits at his desk.)

IANTO: No. Plenty more where that came from.

(Jack sits nervously at his desk; Toshiko just behind him. Jack gets up and walks out of
the office.)

IANTO: Abaddon, the Great Devourer, who'll lead the world into shadow.

JACK: Yeah, thanks, Ianto, I can do without the superstition. You people love any
story that denies the randomness of existence.

IANTO: Thanks. That makes me feel better.

(Jack stops in the workstation area and addresses the team.)

JACK: Okay, I've been fielding calls all night. The government, UNIT, the CIA ...
half the western world and a good portion of the Eastern are asking the same question: Is
this anything to do with us?

GWEN: And is it?

SHORT TIME CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – CONFERENCE ROOM -- DAY

(Toshiko walks up to the plasma as she taps in commands. Everyone is in the conference
room.)

TOSHIKO: I've run a profile on every reported temporal anomaly and tracked any
physical or temporal pattern.

(Toshiko shows them the world map on the monitor. From their location indicated by the big
red dot, many red lines appear in the various locations. Oh, yeah, it’s definitely
their fault.)

GWEN: Shit!

JACK: The cracks in time trace back here to the rift. This city -- this Hub -- is
the center. What you're seeing around the world are ripples and aftershocks. The rift is
splintering because of you.

(Jack looks directly at Owen.)

OWEN: What?

JACK: You opened the Rift without knowing what you were doing. You've caused the
temporal cracks to widen. Time is seeping through.

OWEN: If it wasn't for me, you two would still be in the 1940s. So are we going to
sit around crying into our lattes, or shall we do something about it?

JACK: Bring those who've fallen through time back here, into the vaults.

OWEN: And do what with them?

JACK: We'll deal with phase one first, then I’ll tell you about phase two.

OWEN: You can't control time. You can’t send them back! (shouts) What are you
gonna do?

JACK: (shouts back) We'll think of something!

(Owen quiets down. Everyone is quiet, guilty and scared.)

JACK: (softly) Hey, this is not the end of the world.

(Toshiko nods skeptically.)

JACK: (firmly) I'm certain of that.

(The computer beeps. Ianto gets up and checks it.)

IANTO: Priority one attendance requested at the hospital. Mortality rate's gone
through the roof. They're sealing off the area and designating it a hot zone.

(Owen puts his ear piece on.)

OWEN: I'll go.

JACK: Tosh, go with him.

OWEN: Uh, no, thanks, I'm fine on my own.

TOSHIKO: (firmly) And you'll be even better with me alongside. (she ushers him out)
Shut up and come on.

(Owen and Toshiko leave the office.)

(Gwen glares at Jack.)

GWEN: Did you have to pick on him in public like that?

JACK: All our actions have consequences.

GWEN: And all your staff have feelings, Jack, even Owen.

JACK: (pointedly) Well, you would know.

(Jack walks across the room. Gwen can’t believe he just said that.)

GWEN: He brought you back. (Gwen’s phone rings.) Would you rather be stuck in
World War II?

(Jack doesn’t answer her. She answers her phone.)

GWEN: (to phone) Hello.

ANDY: (from phone) Gwen, it's Andy.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. POLICE STATION – BULLPEN – DAY

(Andy is on the phone.)

ANDY: Listen, I didn't know who else to call.

(A Roman Soldier is in the holding cell shouting at the monitor.)

ROMAN SOLDIER: (shouts in Latin)

(Jack and Gwen watch the monitor.)

PC ANDY: Double murder. Stabbed two blokes in Penarth. Brutal, it was. No mercy.

(Andy opens the barred door leading to the cells. He looks at them.)

PC ANDY: What are we supposed to do? He doesn't speak a word of English, and he's
dressed as a bloody Roman soldier!

JACK: He's not dressed as a Roman soldier, he is a Roman soldier and
he's shouting in Latin.

ANDY: Only word I could pick out was Gelligaer.

GWEN: (corrects) Gelligaer. There's a Roman Fort out at Gelligaer. Built around 75
AD.

JACK: (to Gwen) So, he was on his way there, time splintered, he ends up here.

ANDY: Excuse me?

(Jack and Gwen look at Andy. They forgot he was there.)

ANDY: (waves) Hi. Any time you feel like talking sense ...

JACK: (bluntly) That soldier came through a crack in time.

ANDY: (to Gwen) He's not serious, is he?

CUT TO:

(Jack, Gwen and Andy walk through the hallway on their way to the holding cell.)

ANDY: This sort of thing just doesn't happen. Not in Cardiff.

JACK: Just because you can't understand, doesn't mean it isn't true.

GWEN: I know it sounds mad, Andy but ...

ANDY: All right, Mulder and Scully. Say I do believe you, which I don't, because
it's bollocks. Say I do. How exactly are we meant to handle a prisoner from two thousand
years ago? I mean, has he got the same rights as anyone? How's this gonna work with the
CPS?

(Jack opens a small tin with a filled syringe.)

JACK: We'll take him off your hands.

(Jack opens the small window in the metal door. The Roman Soldier turns and smashes
against the door all the while shouting in incoherent Latin.)

(Gwen and Andy step back.)

ROMAN SOLDIER: (shouts angrily in Latin)

(The Roman Soldier takes a step back from the door.)

JACK: Under any other circumstances, an exuberant Roman soldier would be my idea of
a perfect morning.

(Jack gives the tin to Gwen.)

GWEN: Careful, Jack.

(Andy opens the door. Jack slips inside and they slam the door closed behind him. After a
beat, the Roman Soldier stops shouting.)

(Andy looks hesitantly at Gwen.)

ANDY: Everyone's saying it, you know -- in work, on the streets. Do you think this
is the end of the world?

(Gwen smiles at Andy.)

GWEN: Oh, Andy, don't be silly. Do you think the world's gonna end on your shift?

(Andy looks at her and doesn’t believe a word of it.)

ANDY: I've seen you use that smile on a lot of people.

GWEN: What smile?

ANDY: The smile you use to reassure people when deep down you know everything's
gone to shit.

CUT TO:

INT. HOSPITAL -- QUARANTINE

(The doctor, Owen and Toshiko are dressed in BioHazard suits and moving quickly through
the hallway.)

DOCTOR: This was the first one to die. No ID on her. She just appeared in the
middle of A&E. Nobody saw her come through the doors. She didn't register at the desk.

TOSHIKO: So what happened?

DOCTOR: She started coughing up blood. We moved her into isolation immediately. An
hour or so later, the staff started presenting similar symptoms.

(They enter the room with Patient Zero’s body on the bed.)

TOSHIKO: Which were?

DOCTOR: Bite-like bumps on the skin, chills, fever, headaches, along with black
patches on the skin.

(The patient’s fingertips are blacked and dirty.)

OWEN: Indicating bleeding into the skin and possibly other organs.

DOCTOR: From the staff, it started spreading into other patients who'd been in
reception when she came in.

(Toshiko checks the clothes from the plastic bag.)

TOSHIKO: These aren't contemporary clothes.

OWEN: Her teeth aren't exactly modern-style, either.

(Owen checks her teeth. He knows what it is.)

OWEN: Shit.

DOCTOR: As soon as we realized the rate of infection, we closed down the whole
area.

(Owen takes a couple of deep breaths. He starts heading out.)

OWEN: How many others are infected?

DOCTOR: Thirty, maybe forty.

OWEN: All quarantined off?

DOCTOR: We think so.

OWEN: Then have their clothes and sheets destroyed immediately.

(The doctor nods and leaves. Owen lifts the sheet on another patient. This patient has the
same blackened patches on their arm. He puts the sheet down.)

TOSHIKO: What is it?

OWEN: (quietly) That woman isn't from this century. More like the fourteenth. It's
the ... (takes a breath) It's the fucking ... Black Death, Tosh. She's infected Cardiff
A&E with the plague ... and it's my fault.

(Toshiko shakes her head.)

(The doctor joins them.)

DOCTOR: The team are instigating procedures.

(Owen and Toshiko head out.)

OWEN: The infected will need 30 milligrams of Streptomycin and Chloramphenicol plus
two of Tetracycline.

DOCTOR: That's plague medicine. Standard issue for bubonic.

(Owen heads back to the doctor.)

OWEN: Well done, House. That's what you're up against.

DOCTOR: So what are you gonna do now?

OWEN: Well, you’re a hospital. You've got procedures, haven't you?

DOCTOR: Yes, but everybody said Torchwood would sort it out. What if we get more
carriers appearing out of the blue?

TOSHIKO: We're working to stop that.

DOCTOR: (scared, shouts) We waited for you! You've got to stop this! You've gotta
do something!

OWEN: No, you've gotta do something. (angry) People are dropping through
time and they are going to bring every disease in history through your doors. So you'd
better be ready.

TOSHIKO: (warns) Owen ...

OWEN: (to doctor) You scared enough yet? Cos fuck knows I am!

(Owen turns and heads out the door.)

OWEN: Come on, Tosh!

TOSHIKO: (to the doctor) Make sure they get the medicine. Call us if things get
worse.

DOCTOR: How much worse can they get?

(Toshiko looks at the doctor over her shoulder. She turns and follows Owen out. The doctor
remains standing in the hallway.)

INT. HOSPITAL – HALLWAY – CONTINUOUS

(Toshiko exits the quarantined area through the plastic. Her biohazard helmet is off. She
doesn’t see Owen.)

TOSHIKO: (shouts) Owen?

(She looks through the hallway. He’s not there.)

TOSHIKO: (shouts) Owen!

(Toshiko turns around and sees a Japanese woman standing in the hallway. She recognizes
her immediately.)

TOSHIKO: (shocked) Okasan? [subtitled] Mom?

(They talk to each other in Japanese.)

TOSHIKO’S MOM: [subtitled] It is coming ... out of the darkness.

TOSHIKO: [subtitled] What is coming?

TOSHIKO’S MOM: [subtitled] If there is no other way ... you’ll have to do
it.

TOSHIKO: [subtitled] Do what? Mum?

(And then she vanishes.)

(Behind her, Owen returns through the plastic partition.)

OWEN: (annoyed) Tosh! Come on, stop pissing about.

(He turns and leaves. Toshiko follows slowly.)

CUT TO:

EXT. CARDIFF (STOCK) – DAY

INT. TORCHWOOD – CELLS -- DAY

(The unconscious Roman Soldier is on the floor and not moving while Jack is scanning him
with a hand-held scanner emitting a bright green light. Gwen stands in the doorway.)

GWEN: If Owen managed to open the rift to get you and Tosh back, can't we do the
same thing for these people? We've still got the rift manipulator.

JACK: There's a world of difference. We're talking about taking control of time,
not bringing two people back from the past. Besides, look at the damage Owen caused. We
mess with it further, we'll put the planet in danger. Have I ever let you down?

(Gwen looks at him with a very small smile on her face. She turns and heads back through
the corridor.)

BILIS MANGER: (o.s.) Gwen? Gwen?

(Gwen stops. She turns and finds Bilis Manger sitting on a bed in one of the cells.
Although she hears his voice, his lips aren’t moving.)

BILIS MANGER: (v.o.) I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

(Gwen stares at her.)

(While working on the soldier, Jack looks up and sees Gwen standing in the hallway,
unmoving.)

JACK: (shouts) Gwen!

(Gwen doesn’t move. She doesn’t answer him.)

JACK: (shouts) Gwen!

(She turns and looks at him.)

JACK: Come on. (Jack motions to the soldier.) Hustle!

(Gwen turns and looks back in the cell. Bilis Manger is gone. She steps into the cell and
looks around. It’s empty. Spooked, Gwen steps back out of the cell and leaves.)

CUT TO:

EXT. MILLENNIUM CENTRE (STOCK) -- DAY

(Top View Down of the center.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – THE VAULT -- DAY

(The Roman Soldier is unconscious in a dirty cell. Gwen talks with Jack.)

JACK: Are you sure it was the same guy?

GWEN: It was definitely him. Bilis, the caretaker of the dance hall.

JACK: That's all he said, "Sorry?"

GWEN: Uh-huh.

JACK: What's he got to be sorry for?

(The door opens and Ianto walks in with a handcuffed weevil.)

IANTO: Coming through!

(The weevil growls. Ianto sprays it and subdues it. He puts the weevil in a cell.)

IANTO: Thirteen more reports of Weevils on the loose. We can't keep up at this
rate.

JACK: Everything's on the increase.

GWEN: Can you stop them making that noise?

IANTO: If you've got any ideas how.

JACK: Maybe they're time sensitive. This disturbance may be too much for them.

IANTO: We're now full in all vaults across all nine levels. (There are many weevils
in the single cell.) Do you want me to activate the vaults below? It’s just we've
never used them since I've been here.

JACK: Do it. Gwen, maybe you're right. Let's run a search on your dancehall buddy.
We need to find him.

GWEN: Okay.

(Gwen and Jack leave the room. Ianto stays behind. The weevil moans inside its cage and
turns to look on the side. Ianto also turns and sees Lisa standing at the end of the
hallway.)

LISA: Hello, Ianto.

VARIOUS FLASHES OF: [Scenes from 1X04: Cyberwoman] Lisa the Cyberwoman and Ianto crying.
End of flashes.

(Lisa walks toward Ianto.)

IANTO: What do you want? Why are you here? This isn't happening.

LISA: There's only one way to stop this, before things get worse. People will die,
Ianto. Thousands of people. Unless you open the Rift.

(Ianto closes his eyes for a moment. When he opens his eyes, Lisa is gone. The weevil
howls. The ceiling lights flicker.)

(Spooked, Ianto looks around. Lisa is gone. The weevil hisses. Ianto pants and catches his
breath.)

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS – DAY

(Owen and Toshiko return. Jack and Gwen return.)

JACK: Owen. How was the hospital?

OWEN: Laugh a bloody minute.

(Toshiko returns to her workstation. She’s still stunned by seeing her mother and
non-responsive.)

OWEN: They've got an outbreak of the Black Death.

GWEN: What? Oh, my God!

JACK: (to Toshiko) Have they got it under control?

(Toshiko doesn’t respond. Jack hits the desk with his hand. Toshiko snaps out of it
and looks at him.)

JACK: Tosh! How are they coping?

TOSHIKO: Um, Owen got the place quarantined and organized treatments for those
who've been infected.

OWEN: Only consolation is, it's treatable in these days. But you know, what happens
when the next carrier comes through, Jack? Someone carrying smallpox or Ebola, or
something from the future we don’t even know about? What do we do then?

JACK: Yeah, well, it's not doing us any good standing around speculating.

(Jack heads for his office. Owen blocks his path.)

OWEN: We need to be prepared. We're helpless. All we’re doing here is putting
sticking plasters on gaping wounds!

JACK: What do you suggest?

OWEN: I suggest you lead us and you tell us what the instructions are.

GWEN: Owen ...

OWEN: No, come on. You're all thinking it too. You're the big man here. You keep
all the secrets. Well, now's the time to tell us a few and tell us how the hell we're
gonna get out of this!

JACK: You want to know a secret? There is no solution. I can't fix this. Because
this was never meant to happen. The first thing you learned when you joined Torchwood was
‘Don't Mess with the Rift’. But you disobeyed those orders and now everything
that's happening is down to you.

OWEN: I only disobeyed instructions to get you back.

JACK: And now people are dying.

OWEN: What? So I shouldn't have bothered?

(Jack doesn’t answer him. Owen gets angry.)

OWEN: Who the fuck are you, anyway? Jack Harkness? You don't even exist. We've
looked. So if you're not even a real person, then why should I follow your orders?

JACK: Get out.

OWEN: What?

JACK: Get out! I'm relieving you of your duty.

TOSHIKO: No. You can't do that!

OWEN: Bollocks, you are!

GWEN: Jack, wait.

(Jack walks up to Owen.)

JACK: You're done here.

(Jack walks toward his office.)

OWEN: (scoffs) What, so that's it? The whole world is going to shit and you're
going to fire me?

GWEN: For God's sake! Both of you! We need to stick together on this.

JACK: If I can't rely on you, if I don't have your complete trust, you don't belong
here. That goes for the rest of you. Anyone who agrees with Owen, leave now.

(Owen turns to look at them. No one moves.)

OWEN: So now we know how it is. So that leaves me 24 hours to savor the good times.

GWEN: What are you talking about?

OWEN: Think about it, Gwen. Nobody leaves this place intact. Sometime in the next
24 hours ... I get Ret-conned. All my memories erased. I don't know where or when, but
he'll get me.

GWEN: Jack, this has gone far enough.

(Jack doesn’t back down.)

OWEN: So I guess this is goodbye.

(Owen takes his gun out and puts it on the nearby table.)

OWEN: Good luck with the end of the world.

(Owen takes a couple of steps to leave, then turns to look at Gwen.)

OWEN: I would say thanks for the memories ...

GWEN: (bursts) Jack, for God's sake!

(Owen turns and leaves.)

(The lights flash and the cog door opens. Owen leaves the hub.)

(Gwen looks at Jack.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – OUTER CORRIDOR – CONTINUOUS

(Owen steps out of the cog door and braces himself on the pillars. He takes deep breathes.
The elevator doors open.)

(Owen looks at the elevators and steps inside. He presses the yellow button and the
elevator doors close.)

CUT TO:

INT. THE ARCADES -- DAY

(Gwen and Jack walk through the Arcades.)

IANTO: (from comm) Okay, guys, Bilis' shop is coming up twenty meters on your
left'.

(The shop sign reads:
      A STITCH IN TIME
      TIMEPIECES REPAIRED & REFURBISHED )

(Jack and Gwen enter the shop.)

INT. A STITCH IN TIME – CONTINUOUS

(There are timepieces everywhere – all with varying times.)

GWEN: Wow.

(Jack closes the door behind them.)

GWEN: Some of this stuff must go back centuries.

JACK: He scavenges antique pieces from the past, brings them here, sells them for a
profit. Not a bad business plan.

BILIS MANGER: (o.s.) We all have to earn a living.

(Bilis comes down the spiral stairs. He’s holding an open box in his hand.)

JACK: You're from 1941.

BILIS MANGER: As you were. (to Gwen) Hello, again.

(He walks between them and goes to his desk.)

GWEN: How can you be in two time zones at once?

BILIS MANGER: I can step across eras, like you'd walk into another room. At first,
it was the most incredible gift. Now I know the reality ... it's a curse.

GWEN: Why?

BILIS MANGER: I can see the whole of history, but I don't belong anywhere within
it.

BILIS MANGER: So, your return to this time had a price. Time's splintering. This
city exists on a rift in time. The only way to make it right is to fully open that rift -
let it suck back what fell through.

JACK: (shakes his head) No way. It's too dangerous.

GWEN: Can we even do that?

BILIS MANGER: Of course you can. Isn't that right, Captain?

(Jack doesn’t answer him. Gwen turns and looks at Jack.)

GWEN: Jack?

JACK: You've seen what happened. If we open that rift fully, millions of lives will
be at risk.

BILIS MANGER: And yet, if you don't, more will fall through. Lives will be lost.

(Jack chuckles and takes out his gun. He points it at Bilis. Bilis raises his hands.)

JACK: You know so much, you're coming back with us.

BILIS MANGER: (shakes his head) I'm sorry.

-- and then he’s gone.)

(Gwen steps forward.)

JACK: Damn it!

(Jack puts his gun away.)

JACK: (to comm) Trace the temporal activity around this location. (to Gwen) We need
to find out where he is. (nudges her) Come on.

(Jack runs out of the shop. Gwen lingers, slower to follow Jack. She looks around at the
clocks hanging on the walls. They chime even though they’re on different times.)

BILIS MANGER: (v.o.) Gwen.

(Gwen turns to leave and stops abruptly. Bilis is standing in her way. He looks at her.
She turns to the door and he stops her from opening the door.)

BILIS MANGER: I am not your enemy.

(Gwen backs away from him.)

GWEN: In the cells, why did you say you were sorry?

BILIS MANGER: Sometimes it's better to live in ignorance ... unless ... Do you
really want to know?

GWEN: Know what?

BILIS MANGER: Hold my hands. I'll show you.

(He holds out his hands for her.)

GWEN: Okay.

(She moves to put her hands on his and he moves his hands.)

BILIS MANGER: Only if you're sure.

GWEN: I'm sure.

(He again holds his hands out for her. She takes them and she sees flashes of:

* Her apartment.
* Rhys falls to the floor unconscious.
* She moves along the apartment. There are bloodied handprints on the wall. She finds Rhys
on the floor lying in a pool of blood.

(Gwen gasps and lets go of Bilis’s hands.)

BILIS MANGER: I'm sorry!

(Gwen edges to the door as she stares at Bilis.)

GWEN: What did you just show me?

BILIS MANGER: The future.

(Gwen runs out of the shop.)

INT. THE ARCADE – DAY -- CONTINUOUS

(Gwen runs and catches up with Jack.)

JACK: What took you so long?

(She doesn’t answer him and runs past him.)

JACK: Gwen?

(Jack starts running after her. She doesn’t stop.)

JACK: Gwen!

(Gwen turns the corner. Jack stops running after her.)

CUT TO:

INT. GWEN’S FLAT – DAY

(Gwen returns home frantic. She runs through the apartment looking for Rhys. She
doesn’t see him.)

RHYS: (o.s.) Is that you?

(Rhys is in the kitchen. He looks up at Gwen.)

GWEN: (relieved) Yeah ... It's me.

(She puts her keys down on the table and heads to the kitchen.)

GWEN: Ah! (laughs) You're cleaning the oven!

RHYS: Aye, somebody got to, love.

GWEN: Listen, we gotta go.

RHYS: Why, what's happened?

GWEN: We've gotta go, that’s all.

RHYS: Let me finish here first ...

GWEN: Rhys, we've gotta go. Now!

RHYS: Aw, here we go again, always a hurry since you started that bloody job ...

(Gwen takes out a stun gun and zaps Rhys in the chest. He falls backward down on the
kitchen floor.)

GWEN: I'm sorry.

(Rhys passes out.)

CUT TO:

EXT. VARIOUS CARDIFF CITY (STOCK) – DAY

INT. BAR – DAY

(Owen sits at the bar counter, nearly at the bottom of his third glass.

DIANE: (v.o.) (whisper) Owen.

(Owen looks up.)

DIANE: (v.o.) (whisper) Owen.

(He turns around. Diane is standing there.)

(The music in the bar fades away into the background.)

OWEN: Oh ... Jesus. Diane ...

INSERT: VARIOUS FLASHES OF:
* Owen and Diane dancing.
* Owen standing out on the airport runway alone and watching Diane’s plane fly away.

BACK TO SCENE.

(Owen can’t believe she’s there.)

OWEN: Oh, Jesus.

DIANE: I'm lost, Owen.

(He reaches out and touches her.)

OWEN: I can touch you. I don't understand. Where did you end up?

DIANE: Please. Bring me back, Owen. You can do that, can't you?

OWEN: (shakes his head) I don't know. Everything's out of sync.

DIANE: Please. Please bring me back. Open the rift.

(The barman walks between them.)

BARMAN: Do you want another drink there, mate?

(When he moves away, Diane is gone.)

(The music in the bar background returns.)

(Owen gasps and cries. He closes his eyes for a moment as he gets ahold of himself. He
thinks about what he needs to do.)

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – THE VAULT – DAY

(Gwen looks in one of the cells where she put Rhys. Rhys is lying on the cell bench. Gwen
is startled when he wakes up gasping.)

GWEN: Woah. Take it easy.

RHYS: What's going on?

(He looks around the cell.)

RHYS: Am I dreaming?

GWEN: This is where I work.

RHYS: You work in a prison?

GWEN: These are just the cells.

RHYS: You locked me in a cell? What the hell are you playing at?

GWEN: I was just trying to keep you safe.

RHYS: I was safe at home!

GWEN: No, you weren't. You really weren't.

RHYS: Listen here, Gwen, you'd better tell me exactly what's going on cos I've
taken some shit over the past few months. What's all this?

GWEN: Rhys, listen to me, I need you to trust me. Okay, it may not seem like it at
the moment, but I'm just trying to take care of you. I love you, sweetheart.

(A loud moan echoes in the vault, startling Rhys.)

RHYS: What the hell was that?

GWEN: Just try and relax and I'll come back for you.

RHYS: What do you mean? You're not going to leave me down here!

(Gwen turns and starts to leave.)

GWEN: I'm sorry.

RHYS: Gwen! (shouts) Gwen!

(She opens the door.)

GWEN: I'm sorry.

(Gwen leaves.)

RHYS: Shit!

(Rhys paces the floor and goes to the back of the cell where he places both of his hands
up flat against the wall.)

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – HUB – CONTINUOUS

(Gwen returns to the hub. Toshiko, Ianto and Jack are grouped together.)

JACK: Did he wake up?

GWEN: Yeah. Yeah, he did. Tosh, can you bring up the CCTV of the vaults? Er, just
leave it on the screen, I know it sounds crazy, but ...

TOSHIKO: Sure, no problem.

(Toshiko makes the adjustments to her palm.)

GWEN: Thank you ... for helping me bring him here.

TOSHIKO: I can't understand how Bilis was able to show you that vision.

(On the monitor, Rhys sits down and puts his head in his hands.)

GWEN: It was so real, Tosh. I was in my flat. It smelt like my flat, it had all the
sounds of my flat. (Jack walks over to her as Gwen gets more agitated.) I touched the
blood. I can still feel it on my hands. (Jack holds Gwen’s hand.) Rhys's blood.

(Gwen stops.)

JACK: It’s not gonna happen.

(Gwen takes a breath and calms down. Ianto and Toshiko are both spooked by their own
experience and are very quiet. Jack looks at everyone. Gwen nods.)

JACK: Come on, there's still work to be done.

(Jack starts to move when the lights shut off and the klaxon sounds.)

IANTO: (o.s.) What's going on?

TOSHIKO: We've got a security breach.

(Toshiko and Ianto head back to the workstations.)

JACK: All right, nobody panic.

(Gwen turns and runs back to the vaults.)

GWEN: (screams) RHYS!

(Jack runs after her.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – VAULTS – CONTINUOUS

(Rhys is standing in the back of the cell when the doors open. The alarm lights flash on
and off while the klaxon sounds. Rhys steps out of the cell and into the hallway. He looks
around and heads toward the vault doors.)

(He tries the doors and finds them locked. He turns around and sees a man in black
kneeling in front of the doors at the other end of the hallway. The man stands up and
turns around. It’s Bilis Manger.)

RHYS: Oh, do you work here?

(Bilis looks at Rhys and smiles. He walks over to him.)

RHYS: I'm Rhys ...

(Bilis walks directly up to Rhys --

RHYS: ... Gwen's boyfriend?

-- and stabs him in the stomach.)

(Rhys stares at him with shock. He backs away, his stomach bleeding. Bilis walks up to him
and stabs him again.)

(Rhys groans and falls to the ground.)

(Bilis walks away to the end of the hallway. Rhys watches him. Bilis wipes the blood off
the athame.)

(And then he’s gone.)

(The alarms stop.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATION – CONTINUOUS

(The alarms stop blaring and the lights stop flashing. Toshiko and Ianto look at each
other.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – VAULTS – CONTINUOUS

(The door opens and Gwen rushes in. She finds Rhys dead on the floor near the door, lying
in a pool of blood.)

GWEN: (screams) NO!

(She falls to her knees and grabs him. Jack runs into the room behind her.)

GWEN: No!

(Gwen holds Rhys in her arms and rocks him.)

GWEN: He's gone! He's gone! Please ... No! Please! No!

(She looks at Jack.)

GWEN: We can ...we can bring him back!

JACK: There's nothing we can do.

GWEN: Yes, there is!

(She looks at Rhys and rocks him.)

GWEN: (wails) My boy. What am I going to do? What am I going to do?

(She screams and hits Jack.)

GWEN: No!
GWEN: (screams) No!

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – COLD STORAGE -- DAY

(Ianto and Toshiko stand on the steps with their backs to the wall. They watch as Gwen
sits next to Rhys’ body on the table. Jack gently wipes the blood off her hands.)

GWEN: I'll have to tell his family.

IANTO: We'll deal with it.

GWEN: The way you dealt with that porter the first time I met you? No, you won't
deal with him, Ianto.

TOSHIKO: Gwen, I'm so sorry.

(Gwen laughs.)

GWEN: You never even met him.

(Jack stops wiping her hands and remains quiet.)

GWEN: This is what happens here.

(She looks at Toshiko and Ianto. She smiles without humor.)

GWEN: We all end up alone.

(Her smile fades.)

GWEN: Not me. No way.

(She looks at Jack. Jack doesn’t look at her.)

GWEN: You bring him back.

JACK: No.

(Jack walks away from her.)

GWEN: The resurrection gauntlet ...

IANTO: Was destroyed.

GWEN: Something else.

JACK: I said no.

GWEN: No, there's something wrong with time, so we, we can go back to the moment,
to the very moment ...

JACK: Gwen ...

GWEN: There's something you can do, otherwise WHAT'S THE FUCKING POINT OF YOU?!

(Gwen runs across the room and attacks Jack, clawing at his chest with her fingers while
she screams at him.)

GWEN: You, you bring him back! Bring him back! You bring him back! Do you
understand me, Jack-fucking-Harkness?

JACK: Gwen, I'm sorry.

GWEN: Do you?

(Jack holds Gwen as she cries.)

JACK: I'm so sorry. I'm sorry.

(Everyone is quiet as Gwen wails.)

(Owen bursts through the plastic covering over the doorway. He stops and takes everything
in.)

OWEN: Oh, shit. What happened?

(He sees Jack holding Gwen as she cries and he goes down the stairs. Toshiko brightens
when she sees Owen.)

TOSHIKO: You came back!

(Owen grabs Gwen.)

OWEN: Are you all right? You all right?

(Gwen pushes him away.)

GWEN: (screams) Don't touch me!

(Owen stops. Gwen goes back to Rhys.)

OWEN: (to Jack) How many other people have got to suffer?

(Jack doesn’t answer him. Gwen is sitting next to Rhys.)

OWEN: I'm gonna fix this. I'm opening the rift.

(Owen turns and runs up the stairs. Ianto starts up the stairs.)

JACK: Make sure you stop him.

(Ianto stops and looks at Jack.)

IANTO: No.

(He turns and follows Owen out of the room. Toshiko starts after them.)

TOSHIKO: We're gonna help him.

(Gwen gets up and quickly heads up the stairs. She stops and looks at Jack.)

GWEN: Bilis was right, he said open the rift and everything goes back to normal.
Owen's right. I'm going to get Rhys back.

JACK: Gwen.

(Gwen runs up the stairs.)

GWEN: No!

JACK: Gwen!

(She runs out of the room.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS – CONTINUOUS

(Owen types as fast as he can.)

IANTO: Enter Emergency Protocol One.

(Gwen pushes Owen aside.)

GWEN: Out the way, I'll do this.

(With Gwen at the keyboard, Owen, Ianto and Toshiko stand around the workstation. She
starts typing.)

(The alarm sounds.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – COLD STORAGE – CONTINUOUS

(Jack picks up his gun off the floor and heads up the stairs. Gwen is typing.)

JACK: Get away from the computer, Gwen.

(Owen stands in front of Jack, ready to attack him if necessary.)

JACK: This is a trap. All these cracks around the world, they're diversions. This
is what Bilis wants.

OWEN: What are you afraid of, Jack?

(Gwen reaches the EMERGENCY PROTOCOL ONE password login.)

IANTO: (to Gwen) Rhea Silva.

(Gwen continues typing. Jack takes his gun out and points it at her back. Owen backs
away.)

JACK: I said, "Move."

(Everyone turns around.)

TOSHIKO: What the hell are you doing?!

JACK: Final warning.

(Gwen turns and addresses Jack.)

GWEN: Come on, Jack.

JACK: You're a united front now? Toshiko, the poor girl who'll screw any passing
alien that gives her a pendant? Owen, so strong, he gets in a cage with a Weevil,
desperate to be mauled. Or Ianto, hiding his cyber-girlfriend in the basement. Your three
comrades here pumped bullets into her, remember?

GWEN: I've got to get Rhys back.

(He puts his gun down.)

JACK: Yeah, cos you're so in love with Rhys that you spend half your time in Owen's
bed.

(Gwen hits Jack in the face.)

GWEN: (shouts) Fuck you!

(Jack drops his gun as he falls. Owen picks it up and points it at Jack.)

OWEN: We're relieving you of your command, "Captain". We're opening that
rift and getting back what we lost!

(Gwen goes back to the keyboard. The following message appears:
      RETINA PRINTS
      OF ALL TORCHWOOD
      PERSONNEL
      REQUIRED FOR
      AUTHORISATION
      ENTER

GWEN: Shit!

(Jack starts to get up.)

OWEN: (shouts) Stay down!

JACK: You're in charge, Owen? You've gotta have significantly bigger balls.

(Jack stands up. Owen shoots him in the head. Gwen screams. Jack falls backward, his eyes
wide open as he hits the floor with a thud.)

(Owen fires several more times at Jack.)

OWEN: I'm sick of people doubting me.

(Ianto falls to his knees at Jack’s side. Toshiko gasps.)

IANTO: What have you done?

(Gwen slowly takes the gun from Owen. Owen is shaking. Shocked, Ianto looks at Owen.)

CUT TO:

(Owen’s retina print is scanned into the computer.)

(Toshiko’s retina print is scanned into the computer.)

(Ianto’s retina print is scanned into the computer.)

(Gwen’s retina print is scanned into the computer. Owen looks at Gwen.)

GWEN: We've still got to do Jack's.

(Owen scans Jack’s retina print into the computer.)

(The computer runs through all five retina prints. Gwen types in the commands and a
message appears:
      AUTHORISATION COMPLETE
      INSTITUTE EMERGENCY PROTOCOL ONE? )

(Another message appears:
      WARNING
      PROTOCOL ACTIVATION WILL
      ENDANGER TORCHWOOD INFRASTRUCTURE )

(Gwen looks back at them, then stops on Rhys’ body on the table in cold storage. She
hits ENTER.)

(The Klaxon alarm blares.)

(Everyone stands around and looks at each other.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – THE VAULT -- CONTINUOUS

(The weevils in the cages go wild. The Roman Soldier in his cage yells.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS -- CONTINUOUS

(The alarms blare and lights flash. Everyone stands around waiting for something to
happen.)

(Jack growls and grabs Gwen’s leg. She screams.)

(Owen is startled, as is everyone else.)

OWEN: Oh, my God!

(Jack sees the turmoil in the hub.)

JACK: (weakly) What have you done?

(Gwen turns around and sees the electrical charges ramping up the base of the water
tower.)

(Finally, a stream of energy runs from the ground on up through the water tower.)

EXT. MILLENNIUM CENTRE – DAY

(The stream of energy bursts from the water tower straight up to the sky.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – COLD STORAGE -- CONTINUOUS

(The pans in the autopsy area rattle from the force of the energy running through
Torchwood.)

(Rhys is still dead on the table.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – THE VAULT -- CONTINUOUS

(The weevils in the vault growl with madness.)

(The Roman Soldier hits the glass with his fist trying to get out.)

(The Roman Soldier is gone.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – THE HUB -- CONTINUOUS

VOICE: Come on.
VOICE: Move, move, move, move, move!

(Gwen tries to move Jack. Ianto stops to help her.)

GWEN: Help me move him!

(The conference room glass shatters.)

(Owen, Toshiko with Gwen and Ianto carrying Jack, head for the doors.)

TOSHIKO: Gwen!

OWEN: Come on!

(The trays in Cold Storage rattle and shake. Rhys is still dead on the table.)

(Rhys vanishes.)

(Owen gets the doors open as the walls around them crumble.)

(Ianto grabs Jack’s jacket off the coat rack as they pass it. Pieces of the ceiling
collapse in the hub. Toshiko leads them out the doors.)

VOICE: Go!
VOICE: Come on!

(The overhead support beam breaks and falls onto the workstations.)

EXT. MILLENNIUM CENTRE (STOCK) – DAY

EXT. CENTER – DAY

(Owen, Toshiko run. Following behind them are Ianto and Gwen with Jack between them. Jack
staggers and leans heavily on them, his legs not able to support him.)

OWEN: Keep moving!

GWEN: It's going to be all right, Jack. Everything is going to go back to normal.

(Owen and Toshiko stop running. Gwen lets Jack go and walks toward Bilis who is standing
in front of them. His beady black eyes stare back at her.)

BILIS MANGER: From out of the darkness, he is come.

GWEN: What is he talking about?

BILIS MANGER: Son of the Great Beast, cast out before time, chained in rock and
imprisoned beneath the rift.

GWEN: What?!

(Bilis’ gaze rises high above their heads as he looks at something behind them.)

BILIS MANGER: All hail Abaddon, the Great Devourer.

(Gwen turns around. Owen turns around as well.)

BILIS MANGER: Come to feast on life.

(Way in the distance, a gigantic horned beast approaches the city. The beast roars.)

(The earth shakes with every step it takes. Car alarms go off as the road shudders.)

(The Torchwood team stares at the beast they’ve let loose upon the earth. The beast
roars.)

BILIS MANGER: The whole world shall die beneath his shadow.

(The beast leans down and growls. It turns and heads for the city.)

EXT. TORCHWOOD – STREET -- CONTINUOUS

(People run and scream in the street trying to get away from the monster.)

(As the beast’s shadow passes over the people, they die instantly. A street cleaner
runs to take cover on the side of a nearby building, but the beast’s shadow touches
him and he dies.)

(The beast continues through the city.)

EXT. CENTER – DAY

(Bilis looks proudly at the beast.)

BILIS MANGER: I look upon you, my god, and know my work is done.

(We hear the sound of Bilis vanishing.)

(Gwen turns around.)

(VARIOUS VIEWS: Everyone is dead. Bodies liter the street from people falling where they
were standing. The place is quiet.)

(Gwen turns and goes back to Jack who is leaning on Ianto.)

GWEN: How do we stop it? Tell me what to do, Jack.

(Jack looks at everyone, then settles on Gwen.)

JACK: Just you ... get me to an open space.

(Gwen puts Jack’s arm over her shoulders and they leave the others behind.)

EXT. – DAY

(The beast continues to walk through the city.)

EXT. WASTELAND -- CONTINUOUS

(Gwen stops the SUV and Jack gets out. He’s exhausted. Gwen runs out after him.)

GWEN: What are you gonna do?

JACK: If Abaddon is the bringer of death, let's see how he does with me. If he
feeds on life, then I'm an all-you-can-eat buffet.

(Gwen grabs his jacket and tries to stop him.)

GWEN: No, wait! Wait, you're too weak!

(The Beast stomps through the city.)

(Jack pries her hands off his jacket, his eyes on the beast in front of them. Gwen is
crying.)

JACK: Get out of here!

(Jack pushes her away.)

JACK: GO!

(Jack turns and continues up the road leaving Gwen behind.)

JACK: Drive as fast as you can.

GWEN: Jack.

JACK: (shouts) Bring it on!

(Jack stops at the top of the hill. He turns and faces the beast. The beast stops and
turns to face Jack.)

(The beast roars and starts toward Jack. Jack stands his ground and waits for the beast.
Gwen stands nearby watching.)

(The beast’s shadow covers the ground and when it reaches Jack, it stops – the
edge of the shadow on Jack and unable to move past him.)

(Jack screams in agony. He doesn’t die. The beast looms over him, the shadow stopped
in its tracks.)

(Jack continues to scream in pain.)

(Gwen watches helplessly from the roadside.)

(The beast roars.)

(The life essence inside Jack is sucked out of his body in a long, continuous stream of
light. Jack screams.)

(The beast roars. The light hits the beast, breaking it apart from the inside. The beast
falls to its knees, unable to stop the light. It falls onto the ground in front of Jack.)

FADE TO WHITE:

(Jack falls backwards on the ground, completely spent.)

FADE OUT.

TOP VIEW DOWN: Jack is on the ground, the beast is gone. Jack is not moving.

FADE OUT.

(Gwen runs up to Jack. She falls to her knees beside him.)

FADE OUT.

(Gwen holds Jack’s lifeless body in her arms and cries.)

FADE OUT.

EXT. CARDIFF CITY (STOCK) -- DAY

INT. GWEN’S FLAT – LIVING ROOM / KITCHEN – DAY

(Gwen runs into her flat. She stops when she sees Rhys alive and well.)

GWEN: You're here!

RHYS: Weren't you just here a minute ago?

GWEN: You're here!

(She drops her keys on the table. She runs to him, grabs his face and kisses him on the
lips.)

GWEN: (whispers) Go to bed. Get some sleep ... and I'll be back for you.

(They kiss.)

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – MORGUE -- EVENING

(Gwen and the others gather around Jack’s body on the morgue table and in the white
body bag. The cabinet door is open at his feet. Everyone is quiet.)

(Jack looks deathly pale.)

GWEN: You're certain?

OWEN: He's ice cold. No vital signs.

GWEN: He survived when you shot him. When I first joined, he said he couldn't die.

OWEN: He was wrong.

GWEN: I want to sit with him.

OWEN: Gwen ...

GWEN: I want to sit with him.

(Gwen gently strokes the side of Jack’s face. Owen nods and leaves. Toshiko and Ianto
also leave.)

(Gwen remains with Jack’s body.)

EXT. MILLENNIUM CENTRE (STOCK) -- EVENING

(We pull out on the entire bay area.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – MORGUE -- EVENING

(Gwen leans against the morgue cabinets, her arms crossed. She leans her head back as she
waits.)

DISSOLVE TO:

(Gwen leans close over Jack’s body.)

GWEN: (whispers) Wake up.

DISSOLVE TO:

(Gwen smoothes the gown on Jack’s chest and straightens the body bag wrapped around
him.)

DISSOLVE TO:

(Gwen stands in the corner looking at Jack.)

GWEN: (whispers) Jack.

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS

(The others watch Gwen on the monitors.)

OWEN: How long's she gonna do this?

(Ianto and Owen look at each other. Toshiko continues to watch the monitor.)

(On the monitor, Gwen sits next to the body smoothing Jack’s gown over his chest.)

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – JACK’S OFFICE

(Ianto straightens the papers on Jack’s desk. He sniffles. He walks over to the coat
rack, removes Jack’s coat and presses it to his face as he cries.)

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – MORGUE -- EVENING

(Gwen sits next to Jack. Toshiko stands in the corner with her.)

TOSHIKO: It's been days.

(Gwen doesn’t respond.)

TOSHIKO: We have to face up to it. He's not coming back.

GWEN: I believe in him.

TOSHIKO: Let him go, Gwen.

(Toshiko leaves.)

(Gwen tilts her head as she looks at Jack. She gets up and picks his hand up. She holds
his hand against her cheek and closes her eyes.)

CUT TO:

(Gwen leans close to Jack and kisses him.)

(She turns and starts walking away.)

JACK: (o.s.) Thank you.

(Gwen gasps and smiles.)

(She rushes back to Jack and finds him awake. Jack smiles.)

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – HUB

(Ianto and Toshiko are cleaning up the hub. Toshiko reaches out to remove a machine part
and she sees Jack and Gwen enter the hub. Her eyes widen and she runs across the room to
him.)

(They hug.)

(Ianto stands up and heads over to Jack.)

(He awkwardly holds his hand out, but Jack grabs him and they hug.)

(Owen steps into the hub. He sees Jack and Ianto hug and kiss. Owen puts the kit he’s
carrying down on the floor with a thud. Jack walks over to him.)

OWEN: I ...

JACK: I forgive you.

(Owen nods. Jack grabs him and holds Owen as he cries.)

(Ianto, Gwen and Toshiko watch quietly.)

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – JACK’S OFFICE – DAY

(Jack is going through the files on his desk. Gwen sits on the edge of his desk watching
him.)

GWEN: What's happened to the rift?

JACK: It closed up when Abaddon was destroyed. But it's gonna be more volatile than
ever.

GWEN: The visions we had. We all saw people we loved. What did you see?

JACK: Nothing. (shakes his head) There was nothing.

GWEN: Jack ... what would have tempted you? What visions would have convinced you
to open the rift?

JACK: The right kind of Doctor.

(Jack gets up and heads out of the office.)

GWEN: Jack ...?

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS / HUB – CONTINUOUS

(Jack walks out of the office. Gwen remains behind.)

JACK: Where are they with those coffees?

(A machine beeps. Jack stops and looks at the hand in the tank. The hand is pulsing.)

(Jack walks down into the hub to check on the hand. He stops in front of it and smiles. He
stares at it and waits --

-- then, we hear it: The ancient grinding sounds of the TARDIS engine. An unnatural wind
blows in the hub, ruffling Jack’s hair. He smiles with joy and looks to the side.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS – CONTINUOUS

(The unnatural wind blows loose papers off the desk and onto the floor. Gwen steps out of
the office.)

GWEN: Jack?

(The TARDIS engines thrums and fades. Gwen walks out into the hub.)

GWEN: Jack?

(There’s no answer.)

(Gwen looks out. There’s no sign of Jack. There’s no sign of the tank with the
hand in it either.)

(The alarms sound and the front cog door opens. Ianto, Toshiko and Owen return with the
coffee.)

(Gwen comes down the stairs to meet them.)

GWEN: Did you see Jack on your way in?

TOSHIKO: No.

(Owen looks around.)

OWEN: I thought we'd tidied up in here! What's the matter?

(Gwen looks around.)

GWEN: Um ... he was just here.

(She stops and thinks about it.)

GWEN: Something's taken him. Jack's gone.

(We pull back on the team standing in the hub.)
