TORCHWOOD
1X12: CAPTAIN JACK HARKNESS
==========================

FADE IN:

[INTRODUCTION]

JACK HARKNESS: (v.o.) Torchwood. Outside the Government, beyond the Police.
Tracking down alien life on Earth and arming the human race against the future. The 21st
century is when everything changes, and you've got to be ready.

[Scene from 1X10: Out of Time]

(Diane Holmes lands her plane and waves out the window, a smile on her face.)

DIANE HOLMES: (v.o.) Diane Holmes, pilot.

(Cut to: Diane kisses Owen.)

(Cut to: Owen stops Diane from closing the plane door.)

OWEN: Please, don't go.

(Cut to: Diane’s plane takes off leaving Owen on the runway.)

[Scene from 1X11: Combat]

(Owen is in the cage facing a weevil.)

OWEN: Come on.

(Cut to: The weevil growls and attacks Owen. Owen is on the ground screaming.)

OWEN: Aaargh!

(Cut to: [HOSPITAL] Owen talks with Jack.)

OWEN: I didn't want saving.

FADE OUT TO.

STOCK IMAGE: THE TORCHWOOD TEAM

FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

EXT. CARDIFF CITY (STOCK) – DAY

TOSHIKO: (v.o., in Japanese)

EXT. SAGE STREET – DAY

(The Torchwood SUV tears around a corner, tires screeching. It goes ripping down the road
and beeps its horn as it enters an intersection without stopping. It stops at the
curbside.)

TOSHIKO: (in Japanese) (to phone)

(Jack and Toshiko exit the SUV. She ends her phone call. Jack stops in front of the
building doors. There’s a VOTE SAXON poster on the bulletin board.)

TOSHIKO: It's my grandfather's 88th birthday today.

JACK: I thought you'd done this for me.

TOSHIKO: 88 is a joyous year for the Japanese. I'm off to London to watch men throw
rice.

(On the door are posters and another VOTE SAXON poster.)

JACK: You get that in the Balti after stop-tap. Okay, down to business. What have
we got?

(Jack pushes the door open and enters the building.)

INT. RITZ DANCEHALL – LOBBY -- DAY – CONTINUOUS

(Jack and Toshiko walk through the first floor lobby. The walls are red, the frames white,
the floor a checkered black and white and all the fixtures are wrapped in plastic. There
are various posters on the columns and walls.)

TOSHIKO: The Ritz Dancehall. It's been derelict since 1989 but someone's complained
about hearing music ...

(Jack starts up the stairs and stops.)

TOSHIKO: ... music from the 1940s.

JACK: Shhh! Listen.

(Jack hears music. Toshiko turns at the sound. Jack smiles.)

JACK: You coming up?

(He heads upstairs.)

(Toshiko follows.)

INT. RITZ DANCEHALL – SECOND FLOOR – CONTINUOUS

(Jack opens the door at the top of the stairs and enters the room. It’s more of the
same – plastic wrapped around fixtures and posters littering the walls.)

JACK: Wow! Look at the chandelier. No neon lights back then.

(Jack sways to the music as he walks across the floor. He takes Toshiko’s hand and
sweeps her off her feet as they dance.)

JACK: Just dashing young soldiers and pretty young ladies. (playfully) And as they
danced, the girls would look into their partners' eyes, smile softly and say ...

(He spins her and Toshiko stumbles.)

TOSHIKO: Jack! Mind my laptop.

JACK: (chuckles) I was thinking more along the lines of, "How long before you
head off to war?"

(They continue across the room heading toward the large stairs headed back down to the
first floor. The plastic wrap around the fixtures are gone. The wood on the stairs appears
darker and lush. The large graffiti on the back wall reads RAT BOY and BAD WOLF.)

(Jack and Toshiko stop in the middle of the stairs. The room in front of them has
discarded materials strewn about.)

JACK: Come on. There's nothing here but memories and dust.

(Jack starts to head down the stairs when he stops. Sounds of Big Band music playing and
voices of people chatting and laughing are hard coming from behind them.)

(Toshiko stops. She hears it too. She and Jack head back up the stairs.)

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – SECOND FLOOR – CONTINUOUS

(The second floor is decorated and filled with people dancing to the music. Jack smiles.)

TOSHIKO: They look so real.

(Jack checks his wrist band.)

JACK: They're not ghosts. It's a simple temporal shift. (he laughs with glee) And
it's beautiful!

(Toshiko doesn’t like it at all.)

TOSHIKO: We should get out.

INT. RITZ DANCEHALL – STAIRS / FIRST FLOOR – CONTINUOUS

(Toshiko and Jack head down the stairs to the lobby. They pass by couples with their arms
around each other on their way up to the second floor.)

(Toshiko heads out the front door past the man holding the door open for them.)

BILIS MANGER: Do call again.

JACK: I would love to.

(Jack takes one last look at the hall and follows Toshiko out. Bilis Manger watches them
leave. His smile fades as he closes the door behind them.)

EXT. RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS

(Toshiko and Jack leave the hall. They stop in the doorway, noticing immediately that its
now nighttime.)

TOSHIKO: It's night!

(Jack walks out into the street. The car is gone. Flags are strewn across the roadway and
hanging from the side of the building.)

TOSHIKO: Where's the SUV? Has it been stolen?

(Jack checks his wristband. He looks up and sees the poster on the wall:
      1941
      KISS THE BOYS
      GOODBYE
      DANCE
      SATURDAY, 20TH JANUARY 1941, 7.30 PM
      AT THE RITZ )

JACK: No. We have.

ROLL TITLE CREDITS

FADE IN:

INT. (PRESENT) TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS -- DAY

(Owen is sleeping on the couch. A computer alarm beeps. He wakes up and turns to find
Ianto standing in front of Toshiko’s workstation, staring at her computers.)

OWEN: What the hell is that?

IANTO: Tosh's rift monitor program. She set it to alert me if there were any
further movements.

(Owen sits up.)

IANTO: The rift's been opening more and more recently.

(Owen checks his breath.)

OWEN: Yeah, well, I've noticed that. Doesn't take a genius.

(He stands up and walks over to Ianto.)

IANTO: Tosh reckons the equations are forming a pattern. I should call her. She may
have readings her end and this is over my head.

(Ianto makes the call.)

OWEN: Um, why wasn't I told about this?

IANTO: Well, you've been off, haven't you?

(He disconnects.)

IANTO: The line's dead.

CUT TO:

EXT. (1941) STREET OUTSIDE RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(Toshiko can’t make contact with the hub on her palm.)

TOSHIKO: It's no use. It's dead. I can't get through to the Hub.

JACK: Let's get back inside. That's where we were when we crossed.

(They head back inside.)

CUT TO:

EXT. (PRESENT) CARDIFF CITY (STOCK) -- DAY

IANTO: (v.o.) Gwen, can you get down to Sage Street?

INT. (PRESENT) GWEN’S CAR – DAY

(Gwen is in her car.)

GWEN: (to radio) Yep. What's up?

IANTO: (from radio) We need Tosh.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS -- DAY

IANTO: The rift monitor sounded. She's with Jack but their phones are dead and we
can't access her files.

GWEN: Okay, I'll get down there now.

CUT TO:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(Toshiko and Jack stand on the side of the room talking. The room hasn’t changed.)

TOSHIKO: We really are in 1941. What if we can't get back?

JACK: Flotsam and jetsam slips through all the time. We'll get back. Look on the
bright side. Gives you one hell of an excuse for your party.

TOSHIKO: (angrily) I have a life there. And they can't help us because I have the
latest readings in here.

(People stop and turn at Toshiko’s angry voice.)

JACK: People are staring at us. We need to try to blend in.

(Toshiko removes her jacket.)

TOSHIKO: It's easy for you to say. I'm the only Asian here.

JACK: Don't worry. You're with the Captain.

CUT TO:

INT. (PRESENT) TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS – DAY

(Owen is working on the computers.)

OWEN: (to Ianto) Hey. I've got into Tosh's files, all her reports. See there,
December 24th.

(The DECEMBER 24TH note reads:
      06.54 Rift activity Cardiff 33CI (strength 1023)
      {formulas}
      08.33 Rift activity Bristol 33CL (strength 879)

OWEN: That's when Diane flew through the rift.

VARIOUS OVERLAY IMAGES OF DIANE
* DIANE DANCING WITH OWEN,
* DIANE HUGGING OWEN,
* DIANE BLOWING OWEN A KISS FROM HER PLANE WINDOW.

OWEN: I had to let her go.

IANTO: You were in love with her, weren't you?

OWEN: If Tosh knows a way of opening the rift, maybe we can get Diane back.

IANTO: Jack would never allow it. Opening the rift could devastate the city.

(Owen steps away from the workstation.)

CUT TO:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(The singer sings.)

LYRICS: My love is true. And just for you. I would do most anything at any
time...

(Jack and Toshiko head for the bar.)

JACK: (to bartender) Water, please, and a brandy.

(George walks up to Toshiko and Jack. He’s got his eyes only on Toshiko.)

GEORGE: (to Toshiko) I haven't seen you in here before.

(The bartender puts the drinks on the counter.)

BARTENDER: (to Jack) Three and six, please, sir.

(Jack pats his pockets for money. George stares at Toshiko.)

GEORGE: (offers) I'll, er ... get them.

JACK: Thank you.

GEORGE: On one condition.

JACK: What?

(George grabs Toshiko’s hand and runs out to the dance floor. Toshiko gasps. He
starts dancing with her.)

LYRICS: Come to me, my melancholy baby...

(Jack watches from the bar and laughs as he watches them. A blonde-haired woman steps up
in front of him.)

BLONDE WOMAN: (loudly) Why's George dancing with a Jap?

(Jack’s smile fades as he watches Toshiko dance with George.)

CUT TO:

EXT. (PRESENT) SAGE STREET -- DAY

(Gwen gets out of her car and walks toward the SUV, license #CF06 FDU.)

GWEN: The SUV's here. They must be here somewhere.

(She looks around and heads for the building.)

INT. (PRESENT) RITZ DANCEHALL – SECOND FLOOR -- DAY

(Gwen opens the door and walks into the hall. It’s just as before – plastic
covering on the fixtures, posters on the wall and basically bare.)

GWEN: Jack? Tosh!

(Gwen stops. She hears music. She turns around.)

GWEN: (shouts) Jack!

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – SECOND FLOOR -- NIGHT

(Jack hears Gwen’s call. He looks around. Toshiko is still out on the dance floor
with George. Jack walks up to them and taps George on the shoulder.)

JACK: Do you mind?

GEORGE: I'm only borrowing her, mate.

JACK: Maybe she doesn't want to be borrowed.

GEORGE: You want to make something of it?

JACK: (nods) You can always dance with me if you like.

(George pushes Jack.)

JACK: (chuckles) Okay, I'll lead. You follow.

(Jack pushes George back.)

JACK: Come on, Tosh.

(George grabs Jack and punches him in the face. The crowd gasps. Jack turns and pushes
George back down to the floor.)

(Toshiko gets Jack’s attention.)

TOSHIKO: Jack! Jack, we're meant to be blending in.

(George scrambles to his feet. The Captain steps in, his back to us as he addresses
George.)

THE CAPTAIN: Cut it out, kiddo.

(The Captain turns around and looks at Jack. Jack stops. The Captain is the same height,
the same build and the same coloring as Jack.)

THE CAPTAIN: Sorry about that. The men are a bit lively tonight. It's last day of
OTU tomorrow. (to George) Apologize to the gentleman, George.

GEORGE: I was only dancing.

THE CAPTAIN: I think it was your fist he didn't like, not your foxtrot.

GEORGE: I'm sorry.

JACK: It's okay. You barely got me.

(The crowd chuckles with relief.)

THE CAPTAIN: I think the lady also deserves an apology.

GEORGE: I'm sorry.

TOSHIKO: (nods) Apology accepted.

(Jack and Toshiko turn to walk away. A couple soldiers lead George away.)

MAN: Let's get a drink, George.

(The Captain turns and walks over to Jack.)

THE CAPTAIN: Hey, are you a volunteer too?

JACK: Yeah.

(They shake hands.)

THE CAPTAIN & JACK: (both) I'm Captain ...

(They stop and laugh.)

JACK: You go first.

THE CAPTAIN: I'm Captain Jack Harkness. 133rd Squadron.

(Jack’s face freezes. Toshiko looks stunned.)

BILIS MANGER: (o.s.) Look this way, please.

(Just on the side, Bilis Manger snaps a photo of The Captain and Jack shaking hands.)

(Just to be absolutely clear: In this transcript, the Captain Jack Harkness from Torchwood
will be identified as "JACK" and the Captain Jack Harkness from 1941 will be
identified as "THE CAPTAIN.")

CUT TO:

INT. (PRESENT) TORCHWOOD – CONFERENCE ROOM – DAY

(Owen goes through the files spread out on the conference table while Ianto looks at the
plasma monitor.)

OWEN: Right, the Ritz Dancehall, opened in 1932, shut down in 1989. Due to be
demolished in one week. Now, the reported music is from the 1940s. Why is a ghost job
taking them this long?

(There are newspaper articles flashing on the monitor. The headlines read: "No
Blitz for the Ritz
." The subheadline reads: "Ritz Remains After Bombing
Blitz in Cardiff.")

(The second article headline reads: "Tired Dance Hall Ready for Bingo Overhaul."
The subheadline reads: "The Last Dance for Rundown Ritz in Bingo Takeover.")

(The third article headlines reads: "Puttin’ on the Ritz." The
sub-headline reads: "Finishing Touches are put in place at New Ritz Dance Hall."
Under it is a photo of four soldiers standing with their arms around each others’
shoulders. Another photo appears of a smiling couple dancing.)

IANTO: All those young soldiers ...

REVERSE VIEW: Ianto is looking at something shocking on the plasma.

IANTO: Owen, look. There.

(The photo of Jack shaking the Captain’s hand with Toshiko appears in the photo.)

FLASH TO:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(Bilis Manger snaps another photo. He takes the photo out of the camera and hands the
camera to someone on the side.)

BILIS MANGER: One more for the record, sir.

(He takes his position between Jack and The Captain.)

BILIS MANGER: I insist.

(The four of them pose as their photo is taken.)

BILIS MANGER: Thank you, gentlemen.

(Bilis leaves. Jack motions.)

JACK: I should be heading off ...

THE CAPTAIN: Hey, I didn't catch your names.

TOSHIKO: Toshiko Sato.

JACK: I'm Captain James Harper. 71st.

THE CAPTAIN: 71st, that's where I'm hoping to be posted. What's your poison?

(He walks toward the bar intending to take the conversation there. Jack holds back,
motioning to Toshiko.)

JACK: Maybe later. My friend and I were in the middle of something.

THE CAPTAIN: Sure.

(The Captain heads for the bar. Jack and Toshiko leave the hall.)

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – HALLWAY – NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS

(Toshiko follows Jack.)

TOSHIKO: Why does that man have your name?

(Jack doesn’t answer her.)

TOSHIKO: (upset) I'm lost enough here without you holding back on me!

(Jack stops and turns around.)

JACK: It's not my name. It's his. I took his. But I didn't realize he was ... so
hot!

(He chuckles.)

TOSHIKO: (exasperated) Jack!

JACK: I know too much.

TOSHIKO: Then ... share.

JACK: You wouldn't want that. Trust me. (beat) We have to get back. What's in here?

(He points to her laptop.)

TOSHIKO: I've got half the equation in here. The other half's back at the Hub. If I
can find some way of getting these figures back to base, they can combine them, open the
rift and bring us back through.

JACK: Come on.

(Jack takes Toshiko’s hand and leads her through the hallway.)

INT. (PRESENT) RITZ DANCEHALL – HALLWAY -- DAY

(Gwen walks through the same hallway in the opposite direction. She’s on the radio
with the others back at the hub.)

GWEN: (to radio) I heard music earlier.

(Gwen tries a door and finds it locked.)

GWEN: If I can hear them, maybe they can hear me.

(Gwen walks out into the main hall. She looks around.)

GWEN: They've got to come back.

(Sounds come from above.)

GWEN: (shouts) Jack!

(There’s no answer. She turns and looks down the hallway.)

GWEN: (shouts) Tosh!

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – HALLWAY -- NIGHT

(At that moment, Toshiko turns around. She sees a couple with their arms around the other
walking down the hallway. Jack watches her.)

JACK: What?

TOSHIKO: I thought I heard my name.

(Jack continues through the hallway.)

CUT TO:

INT. (PRESENT) TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS -- DAY

(Ianto is at Toshiko’s workstation. Owen joins him.)

OWEN: Okay, so we use Tosh's information to open the rift and bring them back.

IANTO: We can't. Half the equation's missing.

OWEN: It can't be. It must be somewhere else. Let me try.

(Owen pushes Ianto aside.)

IANTO: It's not there. It might be in her laptop. (Owen starts looking for the
laptop.) Which she never goes anywhere without.

OWEN: Shit. (shouts) Shit!

CUT TO:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – HALLWAY/ROOM – NIGHT

(Jack opens the door at the end of the hallway. Toshiko clutches her laptop to her. No
one’s in the room.)

JACK: No-one here. Come on, quick.

(Toshiko hurries into the room. Jack closes the door and looks around and Toshiko sets up
her laptop on the desk.)

TOSHIKO: It works!

(There are a lot of skulls from horned animals hanging on the walls. The nameplate on the
desk is for BILIS MANGER right in front of a pair of brass horns on a display stand.)

LAPTOP VOICE: Your battery is running low.

JACK: Just take down everything, in case it dies.

(Toshiko nods as she writes down the information with a fountain pen as fast as she can.)

TOSHIKO: I'm not used to writing with these things!

JACK: Don't press so hard.

(The WARNING LOW BATTERY notice appears on the laptop.)

TOSHIKO: Oh, no.

LAPTOP VOICE: Your battery is low.

TOSHIKO: Can you read that?

JACK: Plus one over five a ...

(The WARNING LOW BATTERY notice obscures the formula.)

JACK: - sine two eight X.

LAPTOP VOICE: Your battery ...

(The laptop dies.)

JACK: You got everything you need?

TOSHIKO: I just need the coordinates of the hall, so I can integrate them into the
equation. Then we need to get the information back to the Hub.

(Toshiko takes the paper, folds it and shoves it in her bag.)

BILIS MANGER: (o.s.) What are you doing in here?

(Toshiko and Jack find Bilis Manger standing in the room. Toshiko quickly closes her
laptop.)

BILIS MANGER: Who are you?

(Jack walks around the desk to introduce himself. He holds his hand out.)

JACK: Captain ... James Harper. And this is Toshiko Sato, friend and mathematician.

(Toshiko clutches the laptop to her chest.)

BILIS MANGER: I'm Bilis, the manager. You're not in full uniform, Captain.

(He walks to his desk.)

JACK: On leave. 48 hours.

(Toshiko notices the camera inside the camera on the desk.)

TOSHIKO: That's an interesting camera.

BILIS MANGER: It takes photographs instantly.

TOSHIKO: I didn't know they could do that yet.

(Jack takes note of it as well.)

BILIS MANGER: And I didn't know they made an attaché case out of metal.

(Toshiko glances at her laptop. The clock chimes. Bilis Manger looks at the grandmother
clock nearby. The time is 10:30.)

BILIS MANGER: Where did you get it?

(Jack looks at the clock.)

TOSHIKO: London. I'm from there.

BILIS MANGER: I should go back, dear. They're coming for us now.

(Jack remains quiet. He leads Toshiko out of the room. Bilis watches them leave. As soon
as they’re gone, he opens the desk drawer and takes out a file folder titled:
TORCHWOOD.)

(He looks at Jack and Toshiko.)

CUT TO:

EXT. (PRESENT) SAGE STREET – DAY

(Gwen exits the building.)

GWEN: I've had a good look around but the doors were locked.

(She stops and turns around to look at the building as the music resumes. She looks a the
building and doesn’t notice Bilis Manger standing right next to her.)

BILIS MANGER: Can I help you?

(Gwen gasps and turns around.)

BILIS MANGER: I'm the caretaker.

(Gwen gasps.)

BILIS MANGER: Bilis Manger, at your service.

GWEN: Hello. Could you open it all up for me? I think some of my friends got locked
in.

BILIS MANGER: Follow me.

GWEN: Thank you.

(They head back into the building.)

CUT TO;

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(Toshiko and Jack head down the stairs.)

TOSHIKO: Pearl Harbor, Jack.

JACK: Doesn't happen till the end of the year.

(As she talks, Jack stops and watches The Captain down on the stairs below smoking a
cigarette.)

TOSHIKO: Granddad stayed in London but he was persecuted. If I stay here, what will
happen?

(Jack turns and looks at Toshiko.)

JACK: (quietly) I'll take care of you.

TOSHIKO: This period, you look like you fit in. Have you been here before?

JACK: Yeah. I can't explain but I served in the war in 1941. I was undercover. I
needed a false identity, so I took ... his name.

(He nods down at The Captain below.)

TOSHIKO: Who were you before you took his name? Why him?

JACK: It was convenient.

TOSHIKO: But if you chose his identity to steal, then he ... ?

JACK: Dies, in battle.

TOSHIKO: When?

JACK: Tomorrow.

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – BAR -- CONTINUOUS

(George is telling a story to a group of soldiers.)

GEORGE: And I say, "Look, love, it's raining bombs and fire, so get down that
cellar." And she says, "I can't, there's rats down there!"

(The group chuckles. Toshiko and Jack join them.)

TOSHIKO: So, who's the best navigator here?

GEORGE: Tim. He can't fly for toffee, but at least when he goes down, he'll know
exactly where he is.

(They chuckle.)

TOSHIKO: Why don't we chat over here?

(Toshiko and Tim take a seat at a table in the corner. George whistles as they go. Jack
hangs around with the guys.)

GEORGE: I give the public schoolboy a fortnight.

THE CAPTAIN: That boy's come a long way in five weeks. As long as you boys remember
your training, you'll be all right.

(He puts a hand on Jack’s shoulder.)

THE CAPTAIN: Glad you came. Shall we sit down?

(The Captain and Jack turn as the group disburses.)

CUT TO:

INT. (PRESENT) RITZ DANCEHALL – BASEMENT -- DAY

(Bilis Manger shows Gwen down into the building’s basement. He allows her to go in
first as he lags behind, the large key ring in his hand.)

(Gwen enters the dirty room and looks around.)

BILIS MANGER: Why were your friends in here, anyway?

GWEN: Just a silly dare. Someone said it was haunted.

BILIS MANGER: You look worried, dear. I'll make you a nice cup of tea.

(He turns and leaves. Gwen takes a last look around and follows.)

CUT TO:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(Toshiko and Tim sit at a table while Tim reads through his notebook.)

TIM: The sun rose this morning at 08.12, 21 by 7 degrees. I note it down every day.
It's a bit silly, I suppose.

(Toshiko writes the formula down.)

TOSHIKO: (smiles) It's fantastic.

(She looks across the room. Jack sits with George and The Captain.)

GEORGE: (to Jack) You must have seen some action.

JACK: Let's just say the enemy comes in many guises.

GEORGE: Yeah, I can't wait to give Jerry what for. (to the Captain) How many did
you kill in the Battle of Britain, sir? Twenty-six, wasn't it?

THE CAPTAIN: (shakes his head, uncomfortable) You've read that story countless
times.

GEORGE: No-one's as fast as him. Hasn't lost a man yet.

THE CAPTAIN: (to Jack) Care for a drink, Captain?

JACK: I'll just have water, thanks.

THE CAPTAIN: All right.

(The Captain stands up and goes to the bar. Nancy, a blonde-haired woman in a red coat,
walks in and heads over to The Captain.)

NANCY: Hello, Jack. I know you're having a night with the men but I thought I'd
look in, if that's all right.

(The Captain glances at Jack who is watching. The Captain nods.)

THE CAPTAIN: Yeah. Good to see you.

(They turn toward the bar.)

CUT TO:

INT. (PRESENT) RITZ DANCEHALL – DAY

(Bilis Manger and Gwen walk across the dance floor on the way to his office.)

INT. RITZ DANCEHALL – OFFICE – DAY -- CONTINUOUS

(Bilis and Gwen walk in.)

BILIS MANGER: Is anyone expecting you?

GWEN: Yes.

(He closes the door behind them.)

BILIS MANGER: Perhaps you should call them, otherwise they may think you've
disappeared too.

(He walks across the room. There are more stuff in the room including many modern
electronic items. He picks the kettle up off the table.)

BILIS MANGER: I'll put the kettle on.

(He exits the room through a door in the back. The large grandfather clock reads 11:15.)

(Gwen checks in.)

GWEN: Anything your end?

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. TORCHWOOD -- WORKSTATIONS

IANTO: There are no more photographs of Jack and Tosh after that night. That's
encouraging.

OWEN: Yeah, unless the bombs got 'em.

IANTO: The manager, Bilis Manger, kept them for posterity.

(He looks at the article posted on the clearboard. The headline reads: "Manger Makes
A Stitch in Time." Bilis Manger opens his new shop ‘A Stitch In Time’ on 14
Bute Arcade, Cardiff. The article is by: Malcom Jenkins.)

(Gwen notes the nameplate on the desk for BILIS MANGER.)

GWEN: Bilis Manger? That's the name of the caretaker.

IANTO: (from radio) Can't be the same guy, can it?

GWEN: Not old enough. But he does look a bit out of his time. (She sees the framed
photo on the wall.) He wears a cravat.

(Ianto notes the cravat in the photo he has. He also notes the man in the photo of the two
captains.)

IANTO: Gwen, he's in the photo with Jack and Tosh.

(Owen perks up and runs over next to Ianto.)

OWEN: (softly) He's the answer. (loudly) He came through the rift. Find out what
he's doing.

IANTO: No. Get out, Gwen. Wait for backup.

OWEN: We can't lose him.

IANTO: We can’t lose Gwen! Maybe this is a trap. He could be sucking us back
through time one by one. Get out of there, Gwen. That’s an order.

OWEN: (interrupts) I'm sorry but who the hell put you in charge?

(Gwen turns and slips out of the office quietly.)

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(Jack walks up to Toshiko.)

TOSHIKO: I've got what I need. Now all I have to do is find a way to leave a
message for the team on something that will last across time.

JACK: Okay.

(Jack turns. Toshiko follows and is blocked by a woman.)

AUDREY: I haven't seen you two here before. Is she with you?

GEORGE: Nah, she's after Tim. Why else would she let him bore her to death about
navigation?

AUDREY: Maybe she's a spy.

SOLDIER: The Chinese are on our side, aren't they?

TOSHIKO: I'm Japanese.

AUDREY: You're hardly an ally, then.

GEORGE: Leave it, Audrey.

AUDREY: So whose side are you on? What's in the bag?

TOSHIKO: Nothing.

(Audrey grabs Toshiko’s laptop case. Jack grabs Audrey.)

AUDREY: If you've got nothing to hide, open the bag!

JACK: She can't. Her work is top secret. She's a decoder for the Brits.

(The Captain slips in front of them and hands Jack his drink.)

THE CAPTAIN: Without her, we'd have no way of defending the country. (toasts) To
Toshiko.

JACK: Toshiko!

(Audrey drops it and the tense moment passes. Toshiko walks up to Jack.)

TOSHIKO: I need Bilis's camera. Photographs last, don't they?

JACK: Sure you don't want me to come with you?

(Toshiko starts to leave, but The Captain interrupts them.)

THE CAPTAIN: Oh, you can't run out on me. I've just got you a drink.

(Jack smiles at the Captain.)

TOSHIKO: I'm fine. You carry on.

(Toshiko leaves.)

THE CAPTAIN: (smiles) To a fellow captain.

(They clink glasses and drink.)

JACK: So, what brings you down here?

(Jack turns and they start up the stairs.)

THE CAPTAIN: Well, I had to rest up. Injured my back bailing over Kent.

(Nancy appears behind them.)

NANCY: So that's his excuse for not dancing. Mind if I join you?

JACK: Sure.

THE CAPTAIN: Why not?

(They all start up the stairs.)

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – BILIS’ OFFICE -- NIGHT

(Toshiko picks up the camera. The office door opens. She doesn’t notice and takes a
photo of the formula. She pulls the developing photo out of the camera.)

BILIS MANGER: Starting to be a habit.

(She turns around as he gets closer to her. She hides the photo behind her.)

TOSHIKO: I just wanted to try it out.

BILIS MANGER: This little beauty is very unusual and rare, not unlike yourself.

(Toshiko turns to leave.)

BILIS MANGER: Don't go without this.

(He picks up the paper with the formula on it. Toshiko returns and he pulls the paper back
from her.)

BILIS MANGER: I could think of better things to photograph than numbers, my dear.

(Toshiko grabs the paper from him and heads quickly for the door.)

BILIS MANGER: Do call again.

(Toshiko leaves.)

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – COLD STORAGE AREA – DAY

(Owen pushes the floor grating away.)

IANTO: What are you doing?

(Owen ignores him and pulls out the wiring so he can see what he’s doing.)

IANTO: Owen!

OWEN: We haven't got the missing numbers. We'll improvise with the Rift
Manipulator.

IANTO: We can't. It's risky enough with the equation. If we don't do it properly,
anything can happen.

OWEN: Bombs are falling. They're stuck in the middle of the Cardiff Blitz. It's our
duty to get 'em out.

(Owen grabs the cable and pulls heads back to the workstations.)

CUT TO:

INT. (PRESSENT) RITZ DANCEHALL – DAY

(Gwen is walking through the dance hall. She heads for the door. Jack’s laughter
echoes through the room. Gwen stops and turns. No one’s there.)

GWEN: (shouts) Jack?

(Behind her, a couple dances across the screen.)

(Gwen turns around. They’re not there.)

(Gwen backs away and heads out of the dance hall.)

CUT TO:

INT. (PRESENT) TORCHWOOD – HUB – DAY

(Ianto talks with Owen.)

IANTO: Open the rift and the world could suffer. We could all get sucked in. Who
knows what will come out?

(Owen carries the necessary power cables across the hub floor and back up to the
workstations.)

IANTO: This is about Diane! When will you accept she chose to leave you?

(Owen stops and glares at Ianto.)

OWEN: Whereas your cyber-girlfriend stuck around. Course, not that she had a
choice, wired-up in the cellar.

IANTO: That was different.

OWEN: Yeah, it was. Mainly because Diane didn't try and kill us and, oh yeah, she
also happened to be a human being.

IANTO: Stop it.

OWEN: Not some souped-up monster.

IANTO: I thought she was still Lisa. I loved her. You only knew Diane for a week.

OWEN: And it wasn't enough. Maybe the Manipulator can calculate the missing
figures.

(Owen finishes up writing the computer as Ianto paces and waits.)

OWEN: It isn't working.

IANTO: Good. Jack would never have wanted us to use it this way.

(Owen sees something.)

OWEN: There's a piece missing. We've got to find it.

(Owen moves to look for it. Ianto grabs his arm to stop him. Owen pulls away from him.)

IANTO: Maybe you should go home.

OWEN: You don't have any power over me. (shrugs) Okay, Ianto, we'll play it your
way - safe and boring.

(Owen shakes his head.)

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(The Captain drinks and puts his glass down. Nancy looks bored. The music finishes and the
audience applauds.)

THE CAPTAIN: So, what's your next mission?

JACK: Careless talk costs lives.

NANCY: I should go anyway.

(They stand as she stands.)

JACK: No, I didn't mean that to ...

NANCY: It's all right. I can get a lift if I leave now.

(Jack sits down.)

THE CAPTAIN: I'd better stay here.

NANCY: Aren't you leaving tomorrow night?

(The Captain nods.)

NANCY: You sick of us Welsh already?

THE CAPTAIN: Yeah, that's why I'm still fighting for you.

(He kisses her cheek.)

THE CAPTAIN: I'll be in touch when I'm next on leave.

(Nancy turns and leaves disappointed. Jack nods as he watches them. The Captain turns
around.)

THE CAPTAIN: Nancy ...

(Nancy stops and looks at the Captain.)

THE CAPTAIN: It's been a good few weeks.

(Nancy leaves. The Captain sits down.)

JACK: Was that it?

THE CAPTAIN: She's a sweet kid, but I need to look after my men tonight. It's their
last day tomorrow.

JACK: Go after her. Kiss her goodbye. Anything can happen tomorrow.

THE CAPTAIN: It's just a routine training exercise. I'm hardly gonna die.

JACK: That's when they catch you, when you least expect it. You don't know what's
ahead. Kiss her ... goodbye.

(The Captain finishes his drink and leaves the table to go after Nancy. He catches her in
the doorway.)

THE CAPTAIN: Nancy?

(He kisses her and helps her put her coat on. She turns around and hugs him. She whispers
in his ear.)

NANCY: I love you.

(The pulls away and looks at The Captain. She leaves.)

(The Captain returns to his table. Jack sits there waiting for him.)

THE CAPTAIN: That just made things twenty times worse. Now she thinks she's in love
with me.

(He grabs his hat and leaves.)

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – STAIRS -- CONTINUOUS

(The Captain starts down the stairs. Jack follows him.)

JACK: Hey, her falling for you is hardly my fault. Play it coo in front of your
men, but not in front of me. It's okay to be scared.

(Insulted, the captain turns around.)

THE CAPTAIN: A captain has to keep his head.

JACK: A captain needs to explain risks, tell his men what to expect.

THE CAPTAIN: So what do I do? Tell 'em I saw a young boy get shot in the eyes
mid-flight?

JACK: I understand.

THE CAPTAIN: Do you? Did you hear him on the radio, yelling for his mom, while the
Messerschmitts shot him blew his plane apart? All I can hear on the radio ...

JACK: -- is screams. I went to war when I was a boy. I was with my best friend. We
got caught crossing the border over enemy lines. They tortured him because he was weaker.
They made me watch him die. And they let me go.

THE CAPTAIN: Who were they?

JACK: The worst possible creatures you can imagine. I persuaded him to join up. I
said it would be an adventure. He hadn't lived.

THE CAPTAIN: Have any of us?

(The Captain walks down the stairs.)

EXT. (1941) SAGE STREET – NIGHT

(Toshiko exits the building, the door closing behind her. She huddles near the side of the
building and crouches down. She takes a card out of its cellophane bag, then puts the
developed photo with the formula inside.)

TOSHIKO: Okay, team ... I hope you like treasure hunts.

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATION -- DAY

(Ianto and Owen view the CCTV of the Dancehall entrance.)

IANTO: No sign of Bilis leaving the area.

(Owen grabs his jacket and puts it on.)

IANTO: Er, where are you off to?

OWEN: The dancehall. Bilis's office. He must know how the rift works. Maybe we'll
find a clue there.

(Owen runs out of the hub. The cog door closes. Ianto turns back to the workstation)

CUT TO:

EXT. (PRESENT) SAGE STREET – DAY

(Gwen walks outside.)

GWEN: What would Jack and Tosh do? How would they try and help us?

(Someone walks past. Gwen turns around and sees a glimpse of the grey-haired man as he
turns the corner.)

GWEN: Bilis!

(She turns around the corner and Bilis is gone. Gwen checks the area and finds a padlock
on the ground near an open box. Gwen opens the box and finds Toshiko’s photo of the
formula wrapped in the plastic covering.)

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATION – DAY

(Ianto types the formula into the computer.)

IANTO: (to radio) I need more equations, Gwen.

(Gwen looks around the area.)

GWEN: (softly) What happened here, Tosh?

FLASH TO:

EXT. (1941) SAGE STREET – NIGHT

(Toshiko looks at the photo before she puts it in the cellophane bag and she realizes that
she’s missing a part of the formula.)

TOSHIKO: No.

(Toshiko walks around the building and finds the electrical box. She opens it and finds
the smaller box padlocked and chained shut. The air raid sirens wail throughout the city.
Toshiko pauses. She doesn’t have much time left. She tucks the photo into the box.)

(Toshiko runs back to the building’s front door. She pushes on it and finds it
locked. The sirens continue to wail. Toshiko runs down the sidewalk looking for another
entrance.)

(We hear the sounds of a bomb falling and see a flash of white.)

CUT TO:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(People inside the building rush down the stairs to take cover in the basement. They
scream as the air raid sirens sound. Jack scrambles down the stairs looking for Toshiko.)

(The Captain helps guide panicked people down toward the basement. Bilis stands near the
doorway helping guide people down to safety.)

JACK: (shouts) Toshiko! Toshiko!

TOSHIKO: Jack!

(He turns and finds her on the bottom floor near the doorway.)

JACK: This way!

(Jack and Toshiko step aside.)

TOSHIKO: I didn't get the first part in the photo. The rest is outside. If they
find it, they'll keep looking, won't they?

JACK: Yeah.

(They follow the others into the basement.)

EXT. (PRESENT) SAGE STREET – DAY

(Gwen heads back to her car.)

IANTO: (from radio) Be careful, Gwen. Bilis is still around.

(She notices Owen’s car, license #R006 ZKS, parked behind hers.)

GWEN: (to radio) Owen, where are you?

OWEN: (from radio) I'm in the building. Where's Bilis's office?

GWEN: (to radio) It's at the far end of the corridor. I'll keep looking out here.

INT. (PRESENT) RITZ DANCEHALL – BILIS’ OFFICE – DAY

(Owen looks through everything. He checks boxes and containers. He stops and checks behind
the framed portrait of Bilis Manger hanging on the wall. He continues to check through the
drawers and the filing cabinet.)

(He pauses and thinks about it. He notices something under a red cloth. He pulls the red
cloth aside and finds a safe by the HERCULES SAFE COMPANY.)

OWEN: Yes!

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – BASEMENT -- NIGHT

(Everyone is in the basement waiting through the air raid. Jack and Toshiko make their way
through the concrete room.)

(Tim sits next to Audrey.)

TIM: Thing is, you could be the last girl I ever kiss.

(Tim and Audrey kiss.)

(Toshiko takes the lantern on their table.)

TOSHIKO: I've got to finish the message. Pencil will fade. I need to find something
else.

(Toshiko climbs into the small area to look for something. Jack starts to follow her, then
stops when he sees The Captain enter the room.)

(The Captain looks at Jack and smiles. He stops to talk with a group of people. Jack
stands in the doorway.)

(In the small room, Toshiko searches the old cupboard and finds an old tin.)

TOSHIKO: Airtight. This'll do.

(She takes out her pencil and uses the tin to cut her palm. Using her pencil and her blood
as ink, she finishes the formula in the card.)

(The singer sings to a clarinet accompaniment to keep the people occupied. Jack smiles.)

LYRICS: There'll be bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover. Tomorrow. Just you
wait and see...

(Jack glances in the room.)

(Toshiko finishes the formula and writes a message on the bottom of the paper.)

INT. (PRESENT) RITZ DANCEHALL – BILIS’ OFFICE – DAY

(Owen gets the safe open.)

OWEN: Okay.

(He finds it empty.)

OWEN: Shit!

(He stops. The grandfather clock behind him chimes. Owen looks around the room and finds
more clocks on shelves – they all have different times on them.)

OWEN: Timepieces.

(Owen opens the grandfather clock and removes the weight on the pendulum. It looks like
the missing piece of Toshiko’s machine back in the hub.)

(Quick flash to: The machine with the missing piece. End of flash.)

(Owen keeps the piece.)

(Gwen walks into the building and heads for the office. Owen exits the office.)

OWEN: I didn't find any equations. Um, I'll get back to the Hub.

GWEN: Fine. I'll keep looking here, then.

OWEN: Yeah, you do that.

(Gwen heads toward the office while Owen rushes out of the building. Gwen glances back at
Owen and his strange behavior.)

CUT TO:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – BASEMENT -- NIGHT

(The Captain walks over to Jack.)

THE CAPTAIN: Yes. Of course I'm scared.

(Jack turns and looks at The Captain.)

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – BASEMENT – INNER ROOM -- NIGHT

(Toshiko finishes the message and tucks the card back into the empty tin. She puts the lid
on the tin.)

(She looks around for a place to put the tin. She puts the tin in the back of the small
cupboard.)

INT. (PRESENT) RITZ DANCEHALL – BASEMENT – DAY

(Gwen walks back into the basement.)

GWEN: (to radio) I'm going to check everywhere for the other figures. I'm not going
to leave Jack now.

(She starts looking through the file cabinet. She stops and turns around when she hears
something.)

(Then, she hears the singer and the clarinet.)

(She looks around and doesn’t see anything. The song fades. She goes back to the
filing cabinet. She continues searching the room.)

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – BASEMENT – NIGHT

(Jack and The Captain are quiet.)

(Tim and Audrey are still kissing – and more. The all clear sirens wail. Bilis turns
the overhead lights on.)

BILIS MANGER: Let the dancing continue!

(Everyone cheers and applauds.)

(Bilis suddenly stops smiling and moves out of the room.)

(Toshiko steps out of the room. Jack helps her out.)

TOSHIKO: I've finished. The rest of the equation is hidden.

(Toshiko holds her bloodied hand. Tim notices.)

TIM: What happened?

TOSHIKO: I slipped.

TIM: I've got a first-aid kit in the van.

(Toshiko looks at Jack who doesn’t say anything. She follows Tim out. George walks up
to The Captain.)

GEORGE: Scotch, Captain?

THE CAPTAIN: I'd like some time in private with Captain Harper.

(George leaves. Jack looks at the Captain and smiles.)

CUT TO:

INT. (PRESENT) RITZ DANCEHALL – BASEMENT – INNER ROOM -- DAY

(Gwen walks into the inner room and sees the cabinet. The cabinet is empty. She looks
around and sees the tin can on the floor near a metal cabinet.)

(She picks it up, opens it and finds the rest of the formula.)

GWEN: (to radio) Ianto? Yeah, it's me. I've found it. It's written in blood.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. TORCHWOOD – THE HUB – DAY]

(The alarms blare and the cog door rolls open. Owen runs into the hub.)

(Ianto is at Toshiko’s workstation. Owen joins him and puts his backpack down.)

IANTO: Gwen's found the rest of Tosh's readings.

OWEN: What's she got for us?

GWEN: (to radio) Cos sine squared, axcx = x over 2.

(Owen thinks about it and shakes his head.)

OWEN: No, I need at least three more numbers, Gwen. They must be somewhere else.

GWEN: No, they're not.

OWEN: Well, how do you know?

INT. (ANOTHER TIME) RITZ DANCEHALL – BASEMENT – INNER ROOM

GWEN: (v.o.) Somebody scraped out the final numbers.

(Bilis reads the formula in the card and scratches out the end of the formula.)

BACK TO SCENE.

GWEN: (to radio) Tosh has written a message at the end. It says, "Tell my
family I love them."

(Everyone is quiet.)

CUT TO:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(The music plays and the dancing continues. Jack and The Captain sit at a table on the
balcony overlooking the dance floor.)

THE CAPTAIN: Why did you make me kiss her goodbye?

JACK: I just think you should live every night like it's your last. Make tonight
the best night of your life. You're alive - right here, right now. Your men are fine.

THE CAPTAIN: What are you trying to say?

JACK: Go to her. Go to your woman and lose yourself in her.

THE CAPTAIN: Maybe I should.

JACK: Yeah.

THE CAPTAIN: Is Toshiko your woman?

JACK: No. There's no-one. Go to her.

(The Captain nods. He gets up and leaves.)

INT. (PRESENT) TORCHWOOD – THE HUB -- DAY

(Owen goes back to working on the machine.)

IANTO: It still won't work. There's a piece missing.

OWEN: Bilis had it all along.

(Owen takes the piece out of his jacket and puts it in the machine.)

IANTO: We still don't have all the equation.

OWEN: Maybe the machine can work it out.

(Owen turns the machine on and it starts to power up.)

IANTO: Owen!

(The machine sputters, then stops.)

(Owen throws his jacket off and runs to Jack’s office. He starts searching through
Jack’s desk.)

OWEN: There must be something in the safe. The piece fits. We just need better
instructions.

IANTO: You can't open the safe. You've no right.

OWEN: I'm second in command. I have got every fucking right.

IANTO: There's stuff we don't know about. That's how Jack likes it.

OWEN: I won't play with his toys, Ianto!

(Owen finds a journal and flips through it. He finds what he’s looking for.)

OWEN: "Rhea Silva, the god of war's missus." And a nine-digit number. Not
so clever, Jack.

(Owen open the safe.)

(One by one, he takes out the locked boxes and looks through them. He passes on the box
with the knife and glove in it. He pulls out a tin box with the ghost machine inside.)

(Owen finds it.)

OWEN: Blueprints for the Rift machine.

(Ianto runs out of the office. Owen runs out after him.)

CUT TO:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(Jack sits at the table alone. The Captain returns.)

JACK: I thought you'd gone. This could be your last chance.

THE CAPTAIN: That's why I came back.

(The Captain sits down next to Jack.)

JACK: I might have to leave before the night is over.

THE CAPTAIN: Well, then make the most of now.

(He holds Jack’s hands; their fingers entwined. They look at each other.)

(A woman laughs as she enters the room with her arm linked with her soldier.)

(Jack and The Captain quickly stand up.)

SMILER: We need lovers' corner, if you don't mind, boys.

THE CAPTAIN: Of course. I was just discussing strategies with the captain.

JACK: We'll go somewhere else.

THE CAPTAIN: No. You've told me all I need to know.

(The Captain leaves. Jack follows leaving the couple kissin gon the couch.)

CUT TO:

INT. (PRESENT) TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS – DAY

(Ianto and Owen fight for the blueprints. Owen grabs it from him. Ianto stands in front of
Toshiko’s workstation.)

OWEN: There's instructions in here. This isn't a random act of madness.

IANTO: It's a trap! Bilis wanted you to find it.

OWEN: (scoffs) Why?

(Owen leafs through the blueprints.)

IANTO: To provoke the rift. To incite total chaos and destruction. All the reports
of the haunted dancehall were anonymous. (shouts) What if it was him? Please, listen to
me!

OWEN: I'm tired of being in awe of the rift. I'm tired of living with Jack's
secrets. We don't even know who he is.

IANTO: He's our leader.

OWEN: Not any more. Get out of my way!

(Owen charges at Ianto. The two men fall to the floor fighting. The folder with the
blueprints falls to the floor.)

OWEN: Ianto!

(Owen elbows Ianto.)

IANTO: Ugh!

(Owen grabs the folder with the blueprints and viciously kicks Ianto. Owen walks away.)

CUT TO:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(The dancing and gaiety continues. Jack stands near the stairway. Toshiko walks up to
him.)

JACK: Tomorrow is their last training exercise, just another day. They go out on a
sortie and are surprised by two formations of Messerschmitts.

(Jack and Toshiko watch The Captain with his men.)

JACK: He destroys three of the enemy. (Jack chuckles.) His men listen to his whoops
of joy over the radio. Then it all goes quiet. He can't bail out because his whole plane
is on fire. But his men all make it back to safety.

(Jack looks back out over the stairway.)

CUT TO:

INT. (PRESENT) TORCHWOOD – THE HUB – DAY

(Owen is putting the machine together using the blueprints. Owen drops the blueprints and
turns the machine on. It starts to pulse.)

IANTO: Put the key down.

(Owen turns and looks at Ianto. Ianto raises his gun at Owen.)

IANTO: Or I'll shoot.

CUT TO:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(Toshiko and Jack sit at a table.)

TOSHIKO: Who were you?

JACK: A conman. That's why I took his name, falsified his records so it seemed he
was still alive.

TOSHIKO: How did you end up in Torchwood?

(He thinks about it a moment.)

JACK: Someone saved my life. Brought me back from death. And ever since then, it's
been like they're keeping me for something and I don't know what it is. I'm sorry for
dragging you into this.

TOSHIKO: (smiles) It was my choice.

JACK: I'll look after you.

(Toshiko nods.)

JACK: (tearfully) But there's nothing I can do for him.

(He indicates The Captain who is standing with his men on the side with his men.)

(Toshiko puts her hand in his.)

INT. (PRESENT) TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS – DAY

(Ianto holds the gun pointed at Owen.)

IANTO: You have to let Diane go. Like I did with Lisa.

OWEN: Don't compare yourself to me. You're just a tea boy.

IANTO: I'm much more than that. Jack needs me.

OWEN: In your dreams, Ianto. In your sad wet dreams when you're his part-time shag,
maybe.

(Ianto takes a step closer and cocks the weapon.)

OWEN: That rift took my lover and my captain. So if I die trying to beat it, then
it will all be in the line of duty.

(Ianto continues to hold the gun on Owen. Owen reaches forward to put the missing piece in
the machine. Ianto fires and hits Owen in the back of his shoulder.)

OWEN: Aaargh!

(Owen slams the piece into place and sinks down to the floor. The machine starts up. Ianto
stares at it.)

IANTO: You don't know what you've done.

FADE TO WHITE:

INT. (1941) RITZ DANCEHALL – NIGHT

(The night continues. The singer sings.)

LYRICS: That certain night. The night we met. There was magic abroad in the air. There
were angels dancing at the Ritz. And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square ... I may be
right. I may be wrong ...

(The Captain leans up against the wall the sighs. Jack and Toshiko hold each other’s
hands on the table. Jack stares at the Captain.)

(The Captain walks across the dance floor toward Jack. He takes Jack’s hand and leads
him to the dance floor.)

GEORGE: What's he doing?

(Jack and the Captain dance in each others arms. The other couples on the dance floor stop
dancing to stare. Jack and The Captain don’t care.)

(Toshiko sits on the side and watches.)

(Jack smiles. They pulls away and are just about to kiss when –

BOOM!

(The Rift blasts open – an extremely bright light comes from the hallway.)

TOSHIKO: Jack!

(Toshiko grabs her things and stands up. She heads for the rift.)

TOSHIKO: Jack, we need to get out!

(Jack looks at The Captain and hesitates. Toshiko pauses in front of the rift.)

TOSHIKO: Jack, you have to! We need you!

JACK: (to the Captain) I have to go.

(The Captain nods. Toshiko waits for Jack in front of the rift.)

JACK: It's my duty.

(Jack takes a couple of steps toward the rift. He pauses and makes up his mind as he turns
around and goes back to the Captain.)

(And they kiss.)

(For one brief moment in time, they share a passion of a lifetime in one single kiss
before they each have to return to their own time. They break apart. Jack heads for the
rift. Near the opening, he turns around and looks back at The Captain. Everyone else in
the room slowly vanishes in a haze of white light leaving only the Captain in the center
of the room.)

(The Captain straightens to attention and salutes Jack --

-- and then he vanishes from view.)

(Jack turns and enters the rift with Toshiko.)

FADE TO WHITE:

FADE IN:

INT. (PRESENT) RITZ DANCEHALL – DAY

(Bilis walks to the center of the old dance floor, his eyes black, beady and fathomless.)

(He smiles.)

CUT TO:

EXT. (PRESENT) SAGE STREET – DAY

(The front door opens. Toshiko and Jack exit the building. Gwen is in her car and gets out
when she sees him.)

(She runs up to Jack and hugs him.)

GWEN: Oh!

(Jack laughs and hugs her back. There are tears in his eyes.)

GWEN: You made it! You made it! You made it.

(Gwen runs to Toshiko and hugs her.)

GWEN: Oh, Tosh, come here, come here, come here!

TOSHIKO: I'm fine!

(Gwen laughs.)

(Jack looks around and back at the building, a very serious look on his face.)

CUT TO:

EXT. CARDIFF CITY (STOCK) – DAY

INT. TORCHWOOD – DAY

(Owen’s shoulder is bandaged as he puts some bloodied gauze into a metal dish Toshiko
holds for him.)

OWEN: (mutters) I knew we did the right thing, opening the rift.

(Ianto turns and looks at him.)

IANTO: Still no sign of Bilis.

OWEN: World didn't end after all, did it? Good job you're a crap shot.

IANTO: I was aiming for your shoulder.

(Jack walks in.)

TOSHIKO: It was wartime, I know, but it was beautiful.

JACK: There were angels dancing at the Ritz.

(Toshiko watches Jack as he walks past them.)

OWEN: Jack ...

(Jack enters his office.)

TOSHIKO: (to Owen) Let me.

(Toshiko hands the tray to Owen and follows Jack into the office.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – JACK’S OFFICE -- DAY

(Jack pours a glass and hands it to Toshiko.)

TOSHIKO: He would have been so proud that you took his name.

(He fills his own glass.)

TOSHIKO: (smiles) Because here you are: saving the world. To Captain Jack.

(Jack raises his glass.)

JACK: To Captain Jack.

(They clink glasses and drink.)

FADE TO BLACK.
