FADE IN:

[INTRODUCTION]

JACK HARKNESS: (v.o.) Torchwood. Outside the Government, beyond the police.
Tracking down alien life on Earth, arming the human race against the future. The 21st
century is when everything changes, and you've got to be ready.

FADE IN:

EXT. SIDEWALK -- NIGHT

(GWEN and OWEN are running along the sidewalk. TOSHIKO is communicating to them, directing
them through their earpiece communication unit.)

(There are lots of cuts between TOSHIKO and the other members of the team.)

MONITOR VIEW

(Gwen and Owen run in through the back NO PARKING entrance.)

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. TORCHWOOD – HUB – WORKSTATION

(Toshiko is monitoring them from her workstation computers.)

TOSHIKO: (from comm.) Owen. Gwen. Left into the alley, right, thirty meters.

(Gwen and Owen are running, apparently chasing something.)

GWEN: What is it? What can you see?

(Toshiko checks a map of the area. On it is a red light pulsating in a particular area.)

TOSHIKO: I can't get a visual... . Just a signal. Definitely alien in origin.
Diagonal right, towards the castle.

(Gwen and Owen run out onto the sidewalk, they turn and they run toward the castle.)

(Toshiko monitors their movement and compares it to the map location of where they want to
be.)

(Gwen and Owen nearly run into passing bicyclists. They continue running.)

TOSHIKO: Jack.

EXT. ROAD – NIGHT

(TOP VIEW DOWN: The Torchwood SUV turns right.)

TOSHIKO: (v.o., from comm) Sharp right, twenty meters.

(Toshiko checks their locations on the monitors.)

JACK: (from comm.) Can you identify the target?

TOSHIKO: Still trying to get a visual ... twenty seconds to contact.

(Gwen and Owen are still running.)

(Toshiko monitors their location on the screens.)

TOSHIKO: Fifteen seconds.

JACK: (from comm.) No heroics, we've got no idea what we're dealing with.

(The Torchwood SUV hurries down the road.)

(Gwen pushes it and runs.)

TOSHIKO: Ten seconds.

(The SUV screeches to a stop.)

(Toshiko changes camera view.)

(Jack gets out of the SUV and slams the door.)

TOSHIKO: Got it!

(On the monitors, the CCTV camera catches a man running through an alley.)

TOSHIKO: Got a visual. Suspect's male, wearing a hoodie.

VARIOUS CUTS OF:

(Gwen is ahead of Owen as they run. Gwen turns the corner and is caught on the same CCTV
camera the man ran past. Toshiko can see that Gwen is the closest to catching the man.)

TOSHIKO: Go, Gwen!

INT. HIGH STREET ARCADE – NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS

(They turn into a darkened mall closing for the night. The shop lights are off. The man
runs through the mall. Gwen is still behind him. Owen and Jack are further back.)

(The man turns the corner and jumps over a janitor's bucket belonging to the janitor
mopping the floor.)

(A beat later, Gwen jumps over the same bucket. She's nearly catching up with the
man.)

(At the other end of the mall, the gate is closing. The man runs toward the gate and ducks
under it.)

GUARD: Oi!

(He continues running.)

(Gwen reaches the gate just as its closing. She ducks, tucks and rolls under it. She gets
up and runs. The gate slams shut. Jack and Owen are caught on the other side.)

JACK/OWEN: (shouts) Come on! Open it up! Open it up!
GUARD: All right!

(The gate opens. Jack and Owen slip under and chase after Gwen.)

(Toshiko monitors their location.)

EXT. SIDEWALK – NIGHT – CONTINUOUS

(The man runs out into the night.)

MONITOR VIEW: The man glances behind him to see how far Gwen is.

(Gwen is catching up with him.)

INT. STATION – NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS

(The man runs into the underground station. He jumps over the low entry gate and falls on
the other side.)

VOICE: Hey! What are you doing?

(Gwen enters the station and jumps over the fence.)

VOICE (MAN): In trouble now, mate.

(Toshiko watches on the CCTV cameras.)

(The man continues running. He pushes his way between the people in the underground
corridor. Gwen catches up with him. She grabs his jacket. The man slips out of his jacket
and keeps running.)

(Gwen doesn't chase after him and is left holding his jacket.)

GWEN: (mad) Damn!

(Toshiko is ecstatic.)

TOSHIKO: You star! You did it!

GWEN: (panting) Oh, I was that close ...

TOSHIKO: No, you got it.

GWEN: I've lost him, Tosh, I've lost him.

TOSHIKO: I swear, whatever it is ... You're holding it.

(Gwen stops and looks the jacket.)

(Toshiko works at the computers.)

TOSHIKO: Let me check the camera.

(Meanwhile, Gwen checks the jacket pockets and finds a strange-looking device inside. She
drops the jacket and looks at the device. There are flashing lights surrounding a large
button.)

(Gwen presses the button and is transported to:

EXT. STATION – NIGHT – GHOSTLY PLANE

(The scene shifts. The station is eerily quiet and deserted, not a sound is heard other
than the echoing whoosh of wind through the empty buildings and the sound of her own
breathing. All the people who were there just an instant before are gone -- vanished. Gwen
is left alone.)

(To differentiate this ghostly plane from the normal reality, this place will be called
the GHOSTLY PLANE. There is no life in this reality other than the one holding the alien
device and whatever purpose the alien device serves, which we will learn in this episode.
The voices are echoy in this plane.)

(Gwen looks in front of her at this strange place. She is scared and panting heavily from
her fear. Camera sweeps around Gwen and stops.)

(In the background, off to her side, a little boy walks out of the gates and into the
square where Gwen is. He's around eight, blond-haired and packed to go traveling.
He's got a travel bag slung around his shoulders, a suitcase in one hand and a
ratty-old stuffed teddy bear in the other. He's got a large tag on him.)

(Gwen turns and looks at the little boy. The boy continues walking in her direction.
He's looking around him as though he can't see her.)

GWEN: Hello?

(The little boy doesn't say anything. He continues walking toward her.)

GWEN: Who are you?

(Still nothing.)

GWEN: Can you hear me?

(He stops in front of her and looks at her.)

YOUNG TOM FLANAGAN: (echo-y) I want to go home.

(He looks around. Gwen sees writing on the tag:
NAME: TOM ERASMMUS FLANAGAN
ADDRESS: ST. APPYHORN LNE )

(The little boy looks all around him. Gwen looks scared.)

YOUNG TOM FLANAGAN: (echo-y) No-one knows who I am here. I'm lost.

(Camera pulls away from Gwen as the little boy leaves.)

GWEN: (scared) Come back ...

(The little boy has turned around and is heading back to the station.

GWEN: (scared) Come back.

(The little boy walks through the station gates and vanishes.)

(Gwen looks down at the alien device in her hand --

-- and the scene shifts.)

[EXT. STATION – NIGHT – CONTINUOUS]

(When she looks back up, the color returns. Sound returns. Movement returns. The people
around her return.)

(In the back, Jack and Owen turn the corner and run over to her. Gwen turns and looks at
them.)

JACK: I'm sorry, that damn gate cut us off.

(Gwen doesn't say anything. She's still spooked by the experience.)

JACK: Gwen? Are you all right?

GWEN: I've just seen a ghost.

(Owen and Jack turn and look at Gwen.)

ROLL TITLE CREDITS

FADE IN:

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS -- NIGHT

(Toshiko shows Jack the CCTV footage of Gwen grabbing the man's jacket.)

TOSHIKO: This is the feed from the station camera. Gwen grabs the kid. She's got
his jacket, and then he just slips out.

(Jack picks up the alien device and steps away from Toshiko's workstation. He walks
over to Gwen who is watching the monitor as its projected on the wall over the stairs in
COLD STORAGE.)

JACK: (to Gwen) You okay with this?

GWEN: (to Toshiko) And then?

(On the monitor, Gwen is standing very still. She's holding the alien device in her
hands, the jacket on the floor at her feet. Moments later, Jack and Owen appear on
screen.)

TOSHIKO: Jack and Owen arrive. Then, nothing. Sorry.

GWEN: No, wait. It was as real as this is. More real. I didn't just see that boy. I
could ... I could hear what he was thinking, I could feel it. Like I was lost.

(Ianto appears carrying a tray of cups. He stops by Toshiko's workstation and puts a
cup on her desk. Owen looks at Gwen.)

OWEN: Intense emotion can be part of a neurological event. Hallucinations, dementia
...

GWEN: I wasn't hallucinating, Owen. And I'm not bloody senile.

(Ianto approaches Jack who is looking at the alien device.)

JACK: You pushed this button which caused this apparition moment?

GWEN: Yeah.

GWEN/TOSHIKO/IANTO: Jack, no! Jack, please don't! No!

JACK: (scoffs) As if!

GWEN: But that's how it felt. Like an apparition. A ghost.

JACK: Toshiko, where do we start?

TOSHIKO: The guy you were chasing, I've got lots of CCTV, so tracking him down is
gonna be easy. The little boy? You said there was a name on the card around the little
boy's neck?

GWEN: Flanagan. Tom Erasmus Flanagan.

JACK: Unusual name, that'll help. Run a full check. Births, marriages, deaths,
criminal record, passports. However long it takes, wherever he is, we'll find him.

OWEN: Found him. (Everyone turns to look at Owen.) Flanagan, Thomas Erasmus. 74
Brynaeron Terrace, Butetown.

(He closes the phonebook and turns around.)

OWEN: (drolly) He's in the phonebook.

(He holds it up.)

EXT. FLANAGAN RESIDENCE (#74) – DAY

(They knock on the door. The door opens and Eleri answers the door.)

GWEN: Hi, I'm DI Cooper, this is DS Harper. Could you spare a few minutes, please?

ELERI: Yeah, okay.

GWEN: Thanks.

(She holds the door open and they enter the residence.)

INT. FLANAGAN RESIDENCE (#74) – DAY -- CONTINUOUS

(Eleri walks into the living room and alerts her father. She takes the remote from him.
The door closes. Gwen and Owen enter the living room.)

ELERI: Dad, visitors. It's the police.

TOM FLANAGAN: Oh! Caught up with me at last, have you?

GWEN: I'm Gwen. This is Owen, he's training. It's just routine - we're looking for
eye witnesses to an incident at the railway station last night.

ELERI: We were here, weren't we, Dad? Strictly Come Dancing finals.

OWEN: (whispers) Who won?

ELERI: That newsreader.

OWEN: Oh! She's got legs up to her armpits!

(Eleri laughs.)

TOM FLANAGAN: Would you like a cup of tea?

GWEN: I'd love one, thanks. (Eleri stands up.) Owen will give you a hand.

(Owen gives Gwen a dirty look.)

ELERI: (cheerfully) This way.

(Owen and Eleri leave the room.)

TOM FLANAGAN: She'll talk him to death out there.

(Gwen sits in the chair next to Tom.)

GWEN: He'll give as good as he gets.

TOM FLANAGAN: She was right, though. We were in all last night, we wouldn't have
seen anything.

GWEN: Just for the record, you are Tom Erasmus Flanagan?

TOM FLANAGAN: My father was an Erasmus, his father before him.

GWEN: Now, that's not a Welsh accent, is it?

TOM FLANAGAN: No. Lived here 66 years, and still sound like a barrow boy. (Gwen
giggles.) I was evacuated during the war - 1941. The Germans bombing the hell out of the
East End.

GWEN: Cardiff was being bombed as well as London, wasn't it?

TOM FLANAGAN: We were taken out to the countryside. My mother packed me a suitcase
...

(Quick flashback to: Young Tom Flanagan in his travel wear and carrying his bags walking
around lost.)

TOM FLANAGAN: (v.o.) Big sister wrote my name on a card.

BACK TO SCENE

TOM FLANAGAN: They put me on a train at Paddington. Kept saying I had to go, had to
be a good boy, telling me not to cry, and there was the pair of them were crying their
eyes out! That was the last I saw of them, though I didn't know that then, of course.
Waving goodbye.

GWEN: How old were you?

TOM FLANAGAN: Eight.

GWEN: You must have been very, very frightened.

TOM FLANAGAN: Oh, I didn't know a soul here. There was a mix-up. I kept my head
down so much they forgot all about me. So they left me all on my own.

(Quick flash of: Young Tom Flanagan alone at the station.)

BACK TO SCENE.

TOM FLANAGAN: Felt like the end of the world. I wandered down this tunnel, ...

(Quick flash of: Young Tom walks down the tunnel.)

TOM FLANAGAN: (v.o.) ... totally lost. Forgotten. Looking for someone, anyone who'd
look after me.

BACK TO SCENE.

TOM FLANAGAN: 'Why don't they come for me?' I kept thinking. 'No-one
knows me. I'm lost.' They worked it out in the end, they came back for me, and I got
taken in by a lovely couple, no kids of their own. And well, at the end of the war, I had
no-one left in London. So I stayed here. I'm still here now. Just!

(Gwen smiles at him.)

CUT TO:

EXT. FLANAGAN RESIDENCE – DAY

(Owen and Gwen exit the building and head back to their car. Owen is disgruntled and
irritated.)

GWEN: I don't get it. He was the boy at the station.

OWEN: I can't comment - I was stuck in the kitchen with Motormouth, thanks to you.

GWEN: So was what I saw just a bit of him from years before? Sort of hanging
around?

(Gwen's phone rings. Owen sees her reach for her phone and he sighs. She answers her
phone.)

GWEN: (to phone) Hi.

RHYS: Gwen, uh, I'm just putting a wash on.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. GWEN'S FLAT -- KITCHEN -- DAY

RHYS: You got any whites need doing?

(Rhys kicks the stack of laundry on the floor.)

GWEN: I don't know. Just leave it, I'll sort it out.

RHYS: No, no, no it's no trouble. Just remind me, which drawer do the tablets go
in?

GWEN: Ah, just leave it.

RHYS: Okay, so, are you in or out tonight?

GWEN: I don't know.

RHYS: Again?!

GWEN: Sorry?

RHYS: All I'm asking is you in or out tonight?

GWEN: I don't know.

RHYS: Well, I can live with all the Secret Squirrel stuff, but if you can't even
tell me if you're coming home!

GWEN: Well, nagging isn't helping.

RHYS: Right. Well, that's me told.

GWEN: Aw, Rhys...

RHYS: (interrupts) I'm not staying in on the off chance. Daf's having mates round.
I'll stay there. Do what you want.

(Owen beeps the car horn.)

GWEN: (to phone) Hello?

(She looks at her phone. Rhys hung up. In the kitchen, Rhys takes the tablet and
can't figure out which compartment it goes in. He sighs.)

(Gwen opens the car door.)

GWEN: All right!

(She gets inside. Owen starts the car engine.)

EXT. CARDIFF (STOCK) – DAY

(Lovely, clear view of the harbor and centre. Camera zooms up to the centre's
station.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – HUB -- DAY

(Jack is at the computer pulling up footage of the night before. He zooms in for an image
of the runner and does a search. He finds a match.)

JACK: Our friend with the alien machine in his pocket is ... one ... Sean Harris
aka Bernie.

(Gwen is putting up a photo of SEAN HARRIS up on the board. She turns and heads back into
Jack's office where she takes a seat at Jack's desk. Toshiko is looking through
a file.)

GWEN: And what he's doing with an alien machine is anyone's guess. Nineteen years
old. String of convictions - burglary, shoplifting, credit cards ...

(Ianto is holding a bag of food in one hand and a carrier of coffee cups in the other. He
holds the bag out and open for Jack to takes his meal.)

IANTO: Do warn me if he's dropping in.

TOSHIKO: The theft conviction - he was stealing tires off a car when the owner
turns up, gives him so much grief, he apologizes. Starts putting them back on again which
is when the police show up! And here - shoplifting conviction. Bottle of vodka and three
Pot Noodles.

(Owen is playing a large arcade video game machine.)

OWEN: A criminal mastermind. Got anywhere with that mystery object?

(Jack is looking at an image of the object in the computer.)

JACK: Alien, of course ... Gorgeous nanotechnology, makes NASA look like Toys 'R'
US.

(Gwen looks closely at the alien object.)

OWEN: Well, you've really narrowed things down, haven't you?

(Owen finishes the game.)

(Gwen picks up the object.)

GWEN: At the station it was doing this. When I held it, it lit up and went mad.

OWEN: It's not doing it now, is it?

GWEN: No.

TOSHIKO: (turns to Jack) So. What next?

JACK: This kid, Bernie, where does he live?

TOSHIKO: Splott.

OWEN: Splott?

IANTO: I believe estate agents pronounce it 'Sploe'.

CUT TO:

EXT. HARRIS RESIDENCE – DAY

(Toshiko knocks on the mail slot door. Gwen stands a distance behind her. The door opens
and Bernie's mum answers.)

TOSHIKO: Hi, I'm looking for Bernie, is he in?

BERNIE'S MUM: Friends of his, are you?

TOSHIKO: Yes, I'm from ...

BERNIE'S MUM: (interrupts) I'm his mother. He's a robbing little bastard who
won't set foot in here till he pays me the fifty quid he owes me!

(She slams the door on them.)

CUT TO:

INT. BAR & BILLARD HALL -- DAY

SNOOKER PLAYER: He's barred.

CUT TO:

INT. ARCADE

KID IN ARCADE: He said he'd get me a iPod and he never. And he smoked my fags.

CUT TO:

INT. SHOP

WOMAN IN SHOP: Wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.

CUT TO:

EXT. – DAY

(Gwen and Toshiko wait as Owen brings over something to eat. They're tired and bored
from the unproductive legwork.)

GWEN: Bernie Harris, the Scarlet Pimpernel of Splott.

TOSHIKO: Tell me about it. Give me aliens any day.

(Owen joins them.)

TOSHIKO: (to Owen) Any luck?

OWEN: Nope, but I got four pasties for a pound - anyone?

(Unnoticed by them, Jack approaches them. He's not happy with them and it shows on
his face.)

GWEN: (mutters) If I wanted days like this I'd've stayed in the police.

(Jack reaches them. They look at Jack.)

TOSHIKO: We did try, Jack.

(Owen holds out a pasties bag for him. Jack sighs and leaves.)

(After a beat, they reluctantly follow him. Jack heads for the nearby bridge.)

EXT. UNDER THE BRIDGE – DAY -- CONTINUOUS

(Jack stops under the bridge. The weeds are overgrown and its dark and out of view.)

OWEN: What's he gonna tell us? 'Got it off an alien down the market.'

GWEN: Where are we going?

JACK: Back to the railway station. Controlled experiment. We replicate the original
events as far as possible. Observe and analyze the results.

GWEN: What? I have to do that again?!

JACK: Someone does – any volunteers?

(Jack turns around and tosses the alien device at Owen. Owen catches it.)

OWEN: Whoa!

(Jack, Gwen and Toshiko continue to walk under the bridge. Owen stops and looks at the
device.)

GWEN: We don't know what it is, what it does.

JACK: Nope.

GWEN: Jack, this could be dangerous.

JACK: Yeah.

OWEN: Uh, I don't mean to be picky, but I think I can spot some flaws in this ...

JACK: (interrupts, irritated) I'm sorry, I thought you gave up looking for a
19-year-old kid this morning? I figured maybe you were after something more exciting. A
bit of a challenge.

(Jack turns and continues on his way.)

OWEN: This door-to-door stuff never gets us anywhere.

(Owen looks at the device. It's beeping.)

OWEN: Guys, come here!

(Jack, Toshiko and Gwen continue walking.)

TOSHIKO: (echo-y) Owen! Owen!

(But Owen's attention is completely on the device.)

OWEN: Wait ... !

(He holds the device in his hands and looks at it. He gasps.)

ABRUPT CUT TO:

EXT. UNDER THE BRIDGE – NIGHT – GHOSTLY PLANE – CONTINUOUS

(The scene shifts. Its night it's and raining heavily. Thunder rumbles. The bridge is
eerily quiet and deserted. The ground under the bridge is completely cleared of weeds and
overgrowth. Owen breathes heavily as he looks around the area. The voices are echoy in
this plane.)

(At the other end of the bridge, a woman runs into view. She reaches the wall and makes
her way under the bridge. She's crying. She glances behind her and moves closer in
Owen's direction.)

(She stops, rests against the wall and takes out her compact.)

LIZZIE LEWIS: (echo-y) He's a rotten bastard! My mam was right, his eyes are too
close together! I said, 'Just a dance,' but he wasn't having a bar of it. I
shouldn't have gone outside with him, I should have known better!

OWEN: What's your name?

(The woman doesn't answer her. Instead --

ED MORGAN: (echo-y) Lizzie! Lizzie Lewis ...

(A man steps out under the bridge. He's following Lizzie. Scared, Lizzie looks at
him. The man moves closer to her. The two of them are both in Owen's view. All he can
do is watch the scene unfold before him.)

LIZZIE LEWIS: (echo-y) You're a bad one, Ed Morgan! The girls said not to go with
you, and they were right.

(Lizzie backs away from Ed Morgan. He continues to follow her.)

ED MORGAN: (echo-y) Am I bad? Am I a bad boy? You're a big girl now, Lizzie. You
can make your own decisions. That's why I like you. You're not like the others. You don't
follow the herd. You're smart. Don't you like it that someone can see how smart you are?
Hmm? I can see you, Lizzie. The way you really are.

(He holds her head and they kiss. Then, she starts struggling against him and he
won't release her, continuing to kiss her, forcing himself on her. She frees herself
from him. He hits her across the face.)

(She screams.)

(He grabs her by her hair and takes out a switchblade in the other. Owen is helpless to do
anything but watch.)

ED MORGAN: (echo-y) I don't want to hurt you, I don't ...

LIZZIE LEWIS: (echo-y) I-I told my mam I'd be home by nine!

ED MORGAN: (echo-y) Shhhh ...

(He pulls her off to the dark end of the bridge. Owen watches them. He breathes heavily
from her fear. He can't do anything but watch them.)

LIZZIE LEWIS: (echo-y) PLEASE! Oh, God, someone help me! Help me! Help me ... !

(Suddenly, it ends. The scene shifts back.)

EXT. UNDER THE BRIDGE – DAY -- CONTINUOUS

(Owen twists back around and sees Jack and the others in front of him. Gwen rushes over to
him.)

GWEN: Owen? Are you all right?

(Owen is breathing hard.) 4

OWEN: (panting) She ... she was so scared! I-I-I couldn't ... I couldn't move! I
couldn't help her!

(Gwen holds out her hand and takes the device from Owen.)

(Owen continues to breathe heavily.)

CUT TO:

EXT. CARDIFF (STOCK) – DAY

(TOP VIEW DOWN of the Millennium Centre.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – HUB – WORKSTATIONS – DAY

(Jack and the team discuss what's going on.)

JACK: The first time, it happens to Gwen. A boy, at the railway station.

(Toshiko is looking through a file. Gwen is adding a photo to the glassboard.)

GWEN: Who's now in his 70s, alive and well, and living in Butetown.

(Owen is sitting on the couch going through file folders.)

GWEN: The second time it happens to Owen. Like me, you didn't just see it, you felt
emotions that weren't yours.

OWEN: (nods) She was terrified.

(Gwen looks at Jack.)

JACK: The victim's name was Lizzie. It was maybe 40, 45 years ago. Toshiko, do we
know anything about her yet?

(Toshiko pulls up the information from the computer.)

TOSHIKO: Elizabeth Lewis. Lizzie. Only child of Mabel Ann Lewis of Hafod Street.
Died March 29th, 1963. Raped and murdered on Penfro Street, under the bridge. Seventeen
years old.

OWEN: He killed her.

TOSHIKO: No-one was brought to trial.

OWEN: She told her Mum she'd be home by nine. So what about Ed Morgan? That's what
she called him. 'You're a bad one, Ed Morgan'. Look him up.

TOSHIKO: It's kind of a common name.

GWEN: What's the connection? Where did they come from? It's like being haunted.

JACK: Quantum transducer! (Jack points to the computer image.) Look.

(Toshiko pulls her headset off and rushes over, abandoning Owen's request to look for
Ed Morgan. Owen starts digging through the files.)

TOSHIKO: Wow. I'd kill to get one of those. Transducers convert energy from one
form into another. They're in headphones. They convert electrical signals into sound. And
they're in this device too converting quantum energy and amplifying it.

GWEN: Into ghosts?

JACK: Of course. It's emotion. Human emotion is energy. You can't always see it, or
hear it, but you can feel it. (Toshiko sits next to Owen.) Ever had deja vu? Felt someone
'walk over your grave'? Ever felt someone behind you in an empty room? Well.
There was. There always is.

GWEN: A ghost.

(Jack nods.)

OWEN: What else have we got on Lizzie Lewis, what else have we got?

(Toshiko gets up and heads back to the computer.)

TOSHIKO: Um. 1963 - the records aren't always that detailed.

OWEN: What about newspapers? Witness statements, coroners' reports.

JACK: Owen!

TOSHIKO: What do you want me to find exactly?

OWEN: Well, there must be something!

JACK: For the case to be re-opened, you need new evidence, or a new witness.

OWEN: I saw it happen.

JACK: No, you didn't! You weren't there. You saw the echo of a moment, amplified by
alien technology. So just tell me how that will play in court?

OWEN: Well, since when did we care about court?

JACK: Tomorrow we go looking for Bernie Harris and find out what he knows about
this ghost machine. We do our job and find where this thing came from. Now, go home.

(Jack turns and heads out. Owen doesn't move.)

JACK: Gwen! With me!

(Gwen gets up and follows Jack. Owen grabs a bunch of papers and the file folders. He has
no intention of letting it go.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – FIRING RANGE -- CONTINUOUS

(Jack stands in front of a table full of different kinds of weapons and hand guns. He
checks the cartridge of a particular gun and puts a bullet in the chamber.)

(Gwen enters the training hall.)

GWEN: Jack?

(Jack puts the gun down on the table and turns around. Gwen walks in and joins him. She
steps out and gets a good look at the range. She's impressed.)

GWEN: Whoa.

(Jack indicates the table of weapons. Gwen's eyes are wide as she stares at the
guns.)

JACK: You need to know how to use these. Though I hope you never have to.

GWEN: So, do I ... ?

(She looks at the weapons and laughs.)

GWEN: I'm sorry, it's just ... I don't even kill spiders in the bath.

JACK: Nor do I, not with a gun.

(Gwen laughs. Jack motions to the targets.)

JACK: It's all yours.

(Gwen looks at the table. She doesn't make a move to pick up any. She looks at Jack.)

CUT TO:

(Jack picks up a gun and the matching cartridge. He shows Gwen how to insert the
cartridge. She watches and nods. They're both wearing eye and ear gear.)

(He offers the gun to her. Gwen takes it and inadvertently points it at Jack's face.
Jack moves away and firmly guides Gwen's arm toward the target.)

JACK: Target's that way.

GWEN: Right.

(Gwen blinks. She faces the target, grabs the gun with both hands, takes a stance, points
the gun up to the ceiling, and ... from behind, Jack grabs Gwen's arms. He brings
her arms down.)

JACK: Let's leave the roof in one piece, shall we?

(He removes her left hand from the gun.)

JACK: One hand, not two.

(He turns her shoulders so she's facing the side.)

JACK: Turn sideways to the target.

(He stands behind her and brushes the hair away from her neck. He starts with her shoulder
and guides his hand down her arm toward the gun.)

JACK: Looking along your shoulder, down your arm, a straight line to the sights.

(He simulates holding a gun and raises his hand slowly toward the target.)

JACK: Bring up the gun.

(Gwen brings the gun up too quickly. Jack stops her.)

JACK: Whoa, whoa, whoa!

(He puts her gun arm back down and grabs her shoulders toward him.)

JACK: Too fast.

(He puts his hand over hers and brings up the gun toward the target.)

JACK: It's all in the breathing. Hold it firmly, don't grip it.

(He reaches over and cocks the weapon. He takes up his position behind Gwen again. This
time, he holds her hips firmly against his.)

JACK: Breathe in.

(He takes a breath with her.)

JACK: Focus.

(He holds her hand steady at the target.)

JACK: Breathe out.

(Gwen breathes out.)

JACK: Squeeze gently.

(And she fires.)

(The bullet hits the bullseye on right shoulder of the picture of the attacking weevil.)

GWEN: Wow.

(Jack smiles. Gwen is giddy. He hugs her to him.)

JACK: That was a joint effort. Try it again. On your own, and remember, breathe in.

(CUT TO: Jack watches as Gwen shoots. She brings the gun up slowly, aims, breathes in and
fires twice.)

VARIOUS CUTS OF JACK TEACHING GWEN HOW TO SHOOT

(Jack puts a cartridge in the gun, showing Gwen how to do it. Gwen puts the cartridge in
her gun.)

(CUT TO: Gwen grips her gun with both hands.)

JACK: Don't grip it too tight.

(CUT TO: He lines her shoulders up with the target.)

(Gwen shoots.)

(CUT TO: Jack shows Gwen how to put a bullet in the chamber.)

JACK: Hold it and cock it back.

GWEN: (shakes her head) I didn't cock it right.

(CUT TO: Gwen fires twice.)

(CUT TO: Jack shows Gwen the revolver.)

JACK: Nice and slow.

(CUT TO: Jack aims his gun at the target. Gwen motions along with him.)

(CUT TO: Gwen aims the revolver at the target. Jack looks over her shoulder.)

JACK: Up a little.

(She raises the revolver up.)

JACK: Yeah.

(CUT TO: Jack cocks a gun and hands it to Gwen.)

JACK: Breathe first, then go.

(CUT TO: Gwen fires five times in succession.)
(CUT TO: Jack and Gwen laugh.)

(CUT TO: Jack fires in succession as he advances closer toward the target.)

(CUT TO: Jack fires at multiple targets in succession, moving from side to side.)

(CUT TO: Jack snaps the cartridge in place.)

JACK: (mutters) You puts your hands like this. You know how to do it.

(Gwen nods.)

(CUT TO: Gwen fires in succession as she advances closer toward the target.)

(CUT TO: Gwen turns to Jack.)

GWEN: Two hands or one?
JACK: One hand.

(CUT TO: Gwen fires two guns, one in each hand as she moves sideways at the target.)

(CUT TO: The target weevil is hit with bullets.)

(CUT TO: Gwen fires two guns. When she's finished, she points the guns up at the
ceiling.)

(Jack laughs.)

(Jack and Gwen remove their head gear.)

JACK: Woo-hoo!
GWEN: Wow!

JACK: Nice work! Like I said, I hope you never have to use 'em.

GWEN: Yeah.

(Gwen removes her goggles. She checks her watch.)

GWEN: Oh, God, look at the time. When do you get to go home? You seem to live here.
(He shakes his head.) You don't, do you?

(Jack shrugs.)

JACK: Gotta be ready, the 21st century's when it all changes. And I hate
to commute.

GWEN: Where do you sleep?

JACK: I don't.

GWEN: Doesn't it get lonely, at night?

(Jack doesn't answer her. His smile fades.)

GWEN: I'd better get back, Rhys'll be wondering where I am.

(Jack takes a deep breath and removes his goggles. He places them on the table.)

JACK: Goodnight.
GWEN: Goodnight.

(Gwen leaves. Jack turns and watches her leave. And then he's alone at the firing
range.)

INT. GWEN'S FLAT -- NIGHT

GWEN: (o.s.) Hello?

(There's no answer. The door slams. Gwen turns the light on in the dark hallway. The
place is silent and empty. Rhys isn't there.)

(Gwen walks into the dark living room and checks the answering machine.)

(beep)

RHYS: (answering machine) Hi, it's me here, I'm at Daf's, uh, playing poker, and
I'm winning! He-hey!

(Gwen sits on the sofa.)

RHYS: (answering machine) Look, just so you know, um, I-I-I put your whites on
earlier, even though you were bloody grumpy. They're still in the machine so you'll need
to hang them up.

(Gwen reaches for her bag.)

RHYS: (answering machine) I've out the bins out, but I didn't do the washing-up.
But there's not much of that so ... and you haven't done it for weeks anyway. Ha-ha! I'll
see you when I see ya. Ta-ra.'

(She reaches into her bag and takes out the alien device. She holds it and looks at it.)

LIZZIE LEWIS: (v.o.) You're a bad one, Ed Morgan.

ED MORGAN: (v.o.) Are you the-ere?
LIZZIE LEWIS: (v.o.) The girls said not to go with you and they were right!

ED MORGAN: (v.o.) Am I that bad?
ED MORGAN: (v.o.) Li-zzie ...

(Lizzie cries.)

ED MORGAN: (v.o.) Am I a bad boy?
ED MORGAN: (v.o.) Lizzie Lewis ...

PAST RHYS: (echo-y) So, I've got to stay out of trouble now, have I?

PAST GWEN: Best behavior. I'm a fully-trained police officer and I'll have
you on the floor and handcuffed (she snaps her fingers) Like that.

PAST RHYS: Mm-mm! Promises, promises!

(He kisses her.)

PAST RHYS: I'm so proud of you.

(They drink in celebration. The real Gwen stands in the living room and smiles at the
happy moment.)

(Her smile fades and she looks down at the alien device. She brings the alien device up
and closes her eyes. She concentrates and she's taken to another memory.)

INT. GWEN'S FLAT – DAY – GHOSTLY PLANE -- CONTINUOUS

(The scene shifts again. It's daytime. A car horn beeps outside. Past Gwen rushes

her.)

PAST GWEN: Rhys! The taxi's here, we're gonna be late!

PAST RHYS: I haven't worn these since the Luckley's interview.

(Past Rhys steps out into the room. Past Gwen looks at him and laughs. Past Rhys's
fly is open and his shirt is peeking out.)

PAST RHYS: I'll wear jeans with a shirt and tie.

PAST GWEN: It's mum's 60th. She wanted us smart, that's the whole point.

PAST RHYS: Yeah, but. I busted my zip! I'll be flashing my family allowance
if I'm not careful. (alarmed) What are you doing with that?

(Past Gwen approaches him with a stapler in her hand.)

PAST GWEN: Come on.

PAST RHYS: You're joking.

(Past Rhys backs away from her.)

PAST GWEN: I'll staple it!

PAST RHYS: You're not coming near my valuables with that.

(She playfully chases Past Rhys around the room with the stapler. The Real Gwen smiles as
she watches them run out of the room.)

(The room shifts back.)

INT. GWEN'S FLAT – NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS

(The smile fades from Gwen's face.)

(She looks down at the alien device and sits on the couch.)

RHYS: (o.s.) Hiya.

(Gwen turns around and sees Rhys leaning against the doorway.)

RHYS: Daf and Karen had a barney. She's making him sleep in the spare room. I
didn't fancy the sofa. (He walks toward her.) Look, I don't mind you working all the
hours. I really don't. As long as you still want to come home at the end of it.

GWEN: I do. I'm here. And you're gorgeous.

(She gets up and hides the device behind her back as she walks toward him. They kiss.)

RHYS: Bet you haven't hung the washing up.

(She shakes her head. They kiss again.)

GWEN: Hmm.

(He sits back on the couch, Gwen on top him.)

GWEN: (smiles) Let's leave it till tomorrow, eh?

RHYS: Aye.

and finds one to use.)

(He gets out of his car.)

EXT. MORGAN RESIDENCE – FRONT DOOR -- DAY

(Owen knocks on the front door. There's no answer. Owen checks the window. Ed Morgan
pushes the curtain aside and sees Owen there. Owen heads back to the front door and peeks
in through the mail flap. He knocks on the flap.)

ED MORGAN: Who is it?

OWEN: Mr. Morgan?

(Ed Morgan opens the door.)

ED MORGAN: What do you want? Well?

OWEN: Mr. Morgan. (He shows him his fake ID.) I need to come in.

INT. MORGAN RESIDENCE – DAY -- CONTINUOUS

(Owen is inside the house.)

ED MORGAN: Who said there was gas? I can't smell anything. There's nothing wrong.
I'd have noticed. Can you smell anything? Was it next door?

OWEN: Can we go into the living room, Mr. Morgan?

(Ed Morgan leads Owen to the living room.)

ED MORGAN: There's nothing in here. No gas fire, I mean - I haven't got one.
There's an electric heater. I don't hardly use it. What are you looking for?

OWEN: Sit down, Mr. Morgan.

(Ed Morgan sits down. Owen sits down.)

ED MORGAN: Was it next door? She can't mind her own business. Something wrong with
her. She makes stuff up. Is it her? You won't find anything, if it is. It's all in her
head, know what I mean? What's your name?

(Owen sits forward.)

OWEN: How long have you lived here, Mr. Morgan?

ED MORGAN: Years. This was my mam's house.

OWEN: You'd remember your neighbors. People who lived in this street a while ago?
People who lived ... just around the corner? Like in Hafod Street? Like ... Mabel Lewis?
She only passed away a few years ago, did you know? Of course, she'd moved away long
before that. Couldn't bear the memories. Her daughter. Her only child. Died in '63.
Lizzie. Little Lizzie Lewis.

INSERT: QUICK FLASH OF LIZZIE

OWEN: She loved dancing. Do you remember? You should. Pretty girl. Blonde hair,
blue eyes. Used to wear a little pink coat. Bet she saved all her pennies to get that. All
the rage. She was wearing it last time you saw her.

INSERT: LIZZIE – Ed walks over to Lizzie

OWEN: Last time anyone saw her. Alive.

INSERT: LIZZIE – Ed kisses Lizzie

OWEN: Remember now?

INSERT: LIZZIE

OWEN: (whispers) I know what happened under the bridge that night. Just the two of
you. In the dark. Water dripping from the roof into the canal. Lizzie's hair all wet from
the rain, cold and crying.

INSERT: LIZZIE STRUGGLING AGAINST ED

OWEN: I know what you did, Ed Morgan.

INSERT: LIZZIE

OWEN: And here you are, just ... living your life ... free as a bird. Lizzie told
her mother she'd be home at nine, didn't she. 'Please don't,' she said.
'Please.'

(Quick flash to: Ed pushes Lizzie back against the bridge wall.)

LIZZIE LEWIS: Please!

BACK TO SCENE.

OWEN: 'You're a bad one, Ed Morgan.' 'The girls said not to go with
you, and they were right.'

(Ed gets up.)

ED MORGAN: (shouts) Get out! Get out! GET OUT!

(Owen stands up. He turns back to Ed Morgan.)

OWEN: You thought you'd got away with it, didn't you!

ED MORGAN: You'll get nothing from me! I told you before, you'll get nothing!

(Owen heads for the door.)

ED MORGAN: Get out of my house! Get out of my house!

his face.)

EXT. MORGAN RESIDENCE – FRONT – DAY -- CONTINUOUS

(Owen heads back to his parked car.)

CU: BERNIE

(Bernie sits on the bench in the park smoking a cigarette. He puts his head down.)

ANGLE -- OWEN

(Owen is nearly to his car when he glances up and sees Bernie.)

(Bernie looks up and sees Owen. Owen recognizes him.)

OWEN: Bernie Harris!

(Owen runs around the fence looking for a gate. Bernie jumps off the bench and runs.)

(Owen reaches the gate and finds it locked.)

(Bernie reaches the end of the park and runs out onto the sidewalk. Owen tears around the
corner and heads toward him.)

OWEN: (shouts) Oi!

(Bernie doesn't look where he's going and bumps into an old woman causing her to
drop her grocery bag.)

OLD WOMAN: You mind out, boy!

(It slows him down. He gets up and runs. Owen takes off after him. He runs into the old
woman's grocery bag.)

OWEN: Sorry! Sorry!

(Owen continues running after Bernie.)

CUT TO:

(Three kids play with a soccer ball in the lane. Bernie turns the corner and runs through
the game. Owen runs through the game.)

KID: (shouts) Go on! Kick his head in!

CUT TO:

(Bernie runs through the walkway pass. Owen is right behind him.)

(Bernie hops on some garbage bins and jumps over the brick fence. He lands in a backyard
garden right in front of an old woman sitting in her chair and reading book. He runs out
through another back yard and disappears from view.)

(A beat later, Owen jumps into the garden. He pauses and looks at the old woman. The old
woman nods her head in the direction Bernie went in. Owen takes off in that direction.)

(Bernie hops over a fence, between someone's wash hanging on the line and over the
low fence into a kiddie pool in front of a kid where a little girl is bouncing on a small
trampoline. He jumps over the next fence and continues on his way.)

LITTLE GIRL: Mam, there's a man in the garden!

(Owen runs through the wash, pulling it off the line. He jumps over the low fence and into
the kiddie pool.)

LITTLE GIRL: There's TWO men in the garden!

(Bernie falls over the fence into the yard with some chickens.)

(Bernie crawls across the yard to the other side just as Owen jumps over the fence. Bernie
jumps over the fence and runs into the next yard.)

(Unfortunately for him, the owner has put up barbed wire at the top of the fence.
He's trapped. Owen jumps into the yard. Bernie runs to the gate and finds it
padlocked. There's nowhere to go. He turns and faces Owen.)

OWEN: (panting) Bernie Harris!

BERNIE HARRIS: Who?

OWEN: That wasn't a question.

(Bernie clutches his heart.)

BERNIE HARRIS: Don't hurt me please, I got asthma.

OWEN: I'm not going to hurt ya. (panting) I'm going to bloody kill ya.

CUT TO:

INT. BAR – DAY

(Owen talks with Bernie Harris.)

OWEN: Why do they call you 'Bernie'?

BERNIE HARRIS: I burned my neighbor's shed down when I was twelve.

OWEN: What for?

BERNIE HARRIS: (shrugs) I was just having a fag. Got a bit carried away.

(Jack, Gwen and Toshiko walk up to them.)

JACK: Well, this is cozy. (to Bernie) I hope he bought you flowers.

(They sit down around and near the table.)

BERNIE HARRIS: If this is about the dodgy fags, I don't know what happened to 'em.

(Gwen tosses the device to Jack who catches it. Bernie stops when Jack puts the alien
device on the table.)

JACK: Well. Is it worth knowing, we're probably the only people you can tell.

BERNIE HARRIS: Me and a mate was using this lock up, down on Moira Street. Used to
belong to this old guy. Soft in the head, he was. Still loads of his stuff in there but we
chucked most of it. There was this old biscuit tin full of foreign coins, weird bits of
rock, and that. Thought it might be worth something. I might take it down the Antiques
Roadshow
. Yeah. (Owen laughs.) You don't know. Cash In The Attic, and all that.
So I takes the tin home with me and that thing switched itself on. It makes you see
things. Real things. Real people. I was down the Old Wharf, in the bay. I seen this woman,
with a bundle, something wrapped up. It was night time and she was putting it into the
water all secret like. It was weird cos it was like I was her, somehow. She was scared,
because she knew what she was doing was wrong. I knew, without seeing. It was her baby,
wrapped up. Dead. She hadn't told anyone. Then she just ran away. And I realized, I knew
her. She's old now, but she lives up by the Catholic Church in Splott. So I goes up to see
her. Told her what I'd seen. She give me money not to tell anyone else.

OWEN: You blackmailed her?

BERNIE HARRIS: (shakes his head) She offered. Look, I've seen things you wouldn't
believe. There's the old bridge, on Penfro Street. (Owen nods.) I saw a man ... and a
girl, from ages ago. He was following her back from a dance, along the canal ...

OWEN: Yeah. (to Jack) I know. I saw it. He doesn't know anything, does he.

(Jack picks up the device.)

JACK: Bernie, it's been fascinating meeting you.

(Jack turns and heads for the door. Everyone stands up to leave.)

BERNIE HARRIS: (protests) Oi, where you going? That's mine! You can't just walk
off. I've got rights. So you don't want the other half, then?

(Everyone stops and turns to look at Bernie.)

INT. BERNIE'S HOUSE -- DAY

(Jack examines the second alien device.)

JACK: The other half.

(He hands it to Toshiko who takes it and looks at it. Jack turns and looks at the others.
Gwen is looking through the items in the tin container while Bernie sits nearby nervously
biting his nails.)

GWEN: Weird bits of rock. Foreign metal.

JACK: Alien rock. Alien money. Driftwood, washing in through the rift.

(Owen holds up a can of BAKED BEANS and smiles.)

JACK: So, Bernie. Was this thing in two halves when you found it?

(Before he can answer, Toshiko snaps the two pieces together. Bernie straightens
uncomfortably.)

TOSHIKO: I've got it ... Like clicking Lego together.

(Jack takes the device from Toshiko and looks at it. Gwen takes it from Jack. Toshiko
ducks under Jack's arm and heads over to the tin to look at the items inside.)

GWEN: You split this into two pieces, didn't you?

(Owen is ready to leave.)

OWEN: C'mon, you lot.

(He heads out. Toshiko grabs the tin and looks at Bernie.)

TOSHIKO: We'll take these too, if you don't mind.

(She heads out the door after Owen.)

OWEN: (o.s.) Come on, you lot!

(With a smile on his face, Jack watches her go.)

BERNIE HARRIS: Aren't you gonna arrest me?

JACK: No. We're not the police.

BERNIE HARRIS: But I robbed them.

JACK: I know.

BERNIE HARRIS: And you're going to rob it back off me.

JACK: So call the cops.

(Jack leaves. Gwen turns and starts to follow Jack out of the room. Bernie surges to his
feet.)

BERNIE HARRIS: Don't go!

(Gwen stops and turns to look at Bernie.)

BERNIE HARRIS: I only used it once ... That half. Anyway I couldn't use it again.

GWEN: Why not?

BERNIE HARRIS: I'm going to die. I've seen it happen, out there on the road. I'm
just lying there, bleeding, and then I die. Just like I am now, not old.

GWEN: What do you mean?

(Jack pops his head in.)

JACK: Come on, Gwen!

(Jack leaves.)

BERNIE HARRIS: I'm gonna be twenty in July. Do I die before then?

JACK: (o.s.) GWEN!

(Gwen looks at the device, then moves toward the door.)

GWEN: Just wait there, I'm coming back.

(Gwen leaves. Bernie stays where he is, looking very scared and worried.)

GWEN: Jack!

(She looks down the stairs and doesn't see him. She walks over to the side of the

toward the stairs. We linger over the side of the building and see Toshiko appear out on
the street level.)

EXT. STREET OUTSIDE BERNIE'S BUILDING – DAY -- CONTINUOUS

(The others are behind her. They're headed for the car.)

(Owen turns his car alarm off. Jack and Toshiko head for the SUV. A beat later, Gwen
appears.)

GWEN: Jack! Jack, I need to speak to you.

(Gwen runs out. Gwen is holding the complete alien device in two hands. Jack turns around.
He sees Gwen looking at the device and tries to stop her.)

JACK: Gwen! NO-O-O-O!

(SLOW MOTION: Jack runs to her.)

(Gwen looks at Jack and the scene shifts into --

EXT. STREET OUTSIDE BERNIE'S BUILDING – EARLY MORNING – GHOSTLY PLANE --

GWEN: Hello?

ANGLE – FUTURE GWEN

(Future Gwen is kneeling on the sidewalk in front of Bernie's building. She lifts her
hands and we see that she's clutching a knife, her hands covered with blood.)

FUTURE GWEN: Help me, please ...

(Future Gwen stands up and turns to look at Present Gwen. Future Gwen is the only person
we seek talking with Present Gwen.)

FUTURE GWEN: I was too late, I couldn't stop it.

(PRESENT) GWEN: Stop what?

FUTURE GWEN: He's dead.

(Future Gwen takes a couple of steps toward Present Gwen. She looks as if she's in
shock.)

FUTURE GWEN: Owen had the knife. He wanted to kill him.

(PRESENT) GWEN: Owen?

FUTURE GWEN: (crying) Oh God, I couldn't stop it! Help me!

GWEN: I didn't see him. I didn't see anyone but me. I just said his name.

JACK: Owen.

(Gwen nods. Jack looks at Bernie's mug shot photos.)

JACK: Bernie said he saw himself, dead in that street. You saw Owen with the knife.

GWEN: But I was holding it. My hands were covered in blood.

JACK: That was one future, one of many possible futures. Whatever you saw, what
Bernie saw, might not happen.

GWEN: Might not?! Can't we find out? You've got all this stuff, alien stuff
- isn't there anything that can help?

(Jack shakes his head.)

JACK: I'm sorry.

GWEN: (sighs) I wish we'd never found it. Poor Bernie. Seeing himself dead.

JACK: Well, he might not be.

GWEN: Possible futures. He might like to know that.

JACK: You're certainly finding it a comfort?

(She chuckles wryly.)

GWEN: I don't know what to do.

INT. MORGAN RESIDENCE – NIGHT

(Ed Morgan picks up the phone and starts dialing a number he has on a small slip of paper.
He stops and hangs up.)

(Ed takes the cigarette out of his mouth and looks at the paper again. He glances up at
the mantle clock, then back at the piece of paper.)

INT. BAR – NIGHT

(Toshiko has a drink with Owen.)

TOSHIKO: I found your Ed Morgan earlier - did a trace.

(Owen puts his drink down.)

OWEN: I found him too. Phone book. Took all night. But I found him. Paid him a
visit this morning, put the fear of God into him. What did you find?

TOSHIKO: His medical records. He's claustrophobic, paranoid, depressive, got a
couple of recorded attempts of suicide. He's barely left his house in years. Look Owen, if
Jack finds out ...

OWEN: Well, he won't, will he?

(Toshiko goes back to her drink.)

OWEN: Yeah ... He said, 'You'll get nothing from me. Leave me alone. I've told
you before.'

TOSHIKO: Told who?

BERNIE HARRIS: Dead, yeah?

GWEN: Doesn't mean it's gonna happen.

BERNIE HARRIS: But you don't know how to stop it. For you, or for me. It's got
right into my head, this thing. Some things you're just better off not knowing.

(Gwen's phone rings.)

GWEN: (to phone) Jack?

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. TORCHWOOD – JACK'S OFFICE

JACK: (to phone) Ed Morgan. Owen went freelance earlier and paid him a visit.

(Jack steps out of the office and heads down into the hub. Owen and Toshiko return.)

JACK: (to phone) Wanted to frighten him. Sounds like he succeeded. I think our
friend Bernie Harris got there first. Tried to blackmail him.

GWEN: Bernie was blackmailing him?!

(Gwen turns and looks at Bernie.)

JACK: Looks that way. Ed thought Owen was part of the same outfit. Are you home
yet?

GWEN: No. I'm at Bernie's place.

JACK: (nods) We're heading over, stay right there. (Jack hangs up and grabs his
jacket.) Owen, with me! Tosh, keep an eye on CCTV, in case Bernie makes a run for it.

TOSHIKO: 'Diagnosed with severe depression. Agoraphobic.'

(She checks the CCTV cameras and sees Ed Morgan out on the streets and headed for
Bernie's place.)

TOSHIKO: No. I don't believe this!

EXT. ROAD -- NIGHT

(The Torchwood SUV travels along the highway.)

INT. SUV (TRAVELING) -- NIGHT

(Jack's phone rings. He answers it.)

TOSHIKO: (from phone) Jack, I'm on CCTV ... and I'm looking at Ed Morgan.

JACK: (to phone) What? Where is he?

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS

TOSHIKO: Coming onto Evelyn Street.

JACK: That's Bernie's street! (to Owen) He's heading for Bernie's flat.

(Toshiko keeps her eyes on the monitor.)

INT. BERNIE'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT

(Bernie is looking out the window.)

GWEN: What? Are we expecting someone?

(Without a word, Bernie heads out. Gwen gets up and follows him.)

GWEN: Where are you going? Bernie, Bernie!

(Gwen's phone rings. It's still on the table.)

(She rushes back into the room and gets her phone.)

GWEN: (to phone) Jack, yeah, what the hell is going on?

JACK: We're on our way, are you okay?

(Gwen goes to the window and looks outside.)

GWEN: Yeah, I would be, if someone would just ... just tell me ...

INSERT: FLASHBACK

(Bernie Harris tells them about his death.)

BERNIE HARRIS: I'm gonna die. I've seen it happen, out there on the road.

WHITE FLASH TO:

(Jack talks about Bernie.)

JACK: Bernie said he saw himself dead in that road?

BACK TO SCENE

(Gwen runs out of the apartment.)

JACK: (from phone) Gwen?! Gwen!

INT. SUV (TRAVELING) -- NIGHT

(Jack waits for a response. There's none. He closes his phone and waits. Owen glances
at Jack and continues driving.)

EXT. ROAD (STOCK) -- NIGHT

(The black SUV travels on the road.)

EXT. STREET OUTSIDE BERNIE'S BUILDING – NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS

(Ed Morgan walks up to Bernie. Ed is holding a knife.)

ED MORGAN: I knew you'd find me in the end. I knew you'd come for me. I've been
waiting for years.

(Gwen steps out and joins them.)

ED MORGAN: Have you come for me, too? I used to see it in people's faces when they
looked at me. They knew! I tried to hide, but ... they knew.

(Ed looks up around him.)

ED MORGAN: I haven't been outside for so long.

(Gwen has reached Bernie's side.)

GWEN: Edwin ...

ED MORGAN: Little bitch. You're all the same! You'll blame me, make me the bad one!

GWEN: Edwin, put the knife down.

(Ed moves closer to Bernie.)

ED MORGAN: I've wasted my life for you.

BERNIE HARRIS: We won't tell anyone, no-one else is gonna know. Stay calm. I won't
breathe a word. You'll never see me again. I promise.

(Jack and Owen are behind Ed. They move slowly toward him.)

ED MORGAN: I know. That's why I came. It's what you want, isn't it?

(Jack and Owen grab Ed from behind. Gwen pushes Bernie to the pavement.)

JACK: Got him!

OWEN: Got the knife.

JACK: Are we Okay? ...

OWEN: (whispers) I've got it.

JACK: (again) ARE WE OKAY?!

GWEN: Yeah, yeah, we're okay.

(Owen stands on the side with the knife. He looks at Edwin.)

OWEN: I've got the knife. I've got the knife, Edwin.

(Gwen looks at Owen and slowly stands up.)

OWEN: You were so close. (Jack and Gwen look at each other.) You were going for
her, weren't you? Just like with Lizzie.

(As Owen gets closer to Ed, Jack backs them away from him.)

OWEN: I've got the knife, Edwin. You were so close.

(Owen puts the knife up to Ed's cheek.)

OWEN: As close as I am now.

INSERT: FLASHBACK

(Future Gwen holds the knife in her bloodied hands.)

FUTURE GWEN: Owen had the knife. He wanted to kill him.

BACK TO SCENE.

(Jack looks at Gwen.)

OWEN: Why should you get away with it?

JACK: Owen.

OWEN: You said you were sorry, that you didn't want to hurt her, but you didn't
stop.

JACK: (shouts) Owen!

(Owen keeps the blade against Edwin's cheek.)

OWEN: What if I didn't stop? Would I be sorry?

GWEN: Owen, no!

OWEN: I don't know.

(After a moment, Owen moves the knife away from Edwin. Gwen moves in and takes the knife
from Owen. Owen releases his hold on the knife.)

JACK: (angrily to Owen) Go and deal with Bernie!

(Owen moves away. Gwen smiles with relief.)

GWEN: (whispers) I've got the knife.

(She looks at Jack.)

GWEN: No-one died.

(Jack releases his hold on Edwin.)

GWEN: You stopped it from happening. You got here in time!

(Ed steps away from Jack --

ED MORGAN: I knew you'd come for me. Oh!

-- and grabs Gwen who is still holding the knife.)

(Jack grabs Edwin.)

JACK: No!

(But it's too late.)

(Gwen steps away and Ed falls to the ground. Owen rushes over to help. Gwen is shocked.)

(Owen opens Ed's shirt to get to the wound.)

OWEN: He's arresting!

(Owen starts chest compressions.)

(Gwen looks at Jack.)

GWEN: Oh, God.

(Owen stops chest compressions.)

(Gwen is in shock. She looks at Jack.)

GWEN: Help me. I was too close, I couldn't stop it! Oh, God!

(She looks down at the knife and her bloodied hands.)

GWEN: Oh, God!

(She drops the knife and looks at her hands.)

GWEN: I just - I just ... I couldn't ... I couldn't stop it.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. CARDIFF CITY LIGHTS (STOCK) -- NIGHT

(Lovely view of the city lights down below.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – JACK'S OFFICE -- NIGHT

(Everyone meets in the office. Gwen looks haggard. She's sitting in the seat in front
of Jack's desk, a blanket wrapped around her.)

TOSHIKO: He wanted to die. He would have found a way, no matter what.

OWEN: I screwed up, I know I did. But um ... I didn't kill him. I could of, but I
didn't.

GWEN: (crying) No. I did.

JACK: Tosh is right. It could have been anyone.

(Toshiko looks at the alien device.)

TOSHIKO: What about that?

JACK: The problem with seeing the future is you can't just sit and look at it. Got
to try and change things. Make it happen differently.

(Jack picks up the device and looks at it. He shakes his head.)

JACK: It's not meant for us. All these ghosts. We'd be lost. Sun's nearly up.

(Jack holds the device out.)

JACK: Ianto.

IANTO: Secure archives?

(Jack nods. Ianto finishes his drink and takes the device from Jack. He turns and heads
for the secured cabinet in the back of the room.)

JACK: Come on.

(Jack looks at Gwen.)

(We hold on Gwen – still in shock.)

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. JUST BEFORE DAWN

(Jack and Gwen talk.)

GWEN: I killed him. I've still got blood on my hands.

JACK: He killed himself. Come on, Gwen. Look - the sun's coming up.

(He looks around.)

GWEN: A new day.

JACK: The city'll be awake soon. All those people. (whispers) All that energy.

GWEN: All those ghosts.

JACK: We're surrounded by 'em. We can't see 'em, we can't touch 'em ... but they're
there, all right. A million shadows of human emotion.

(He leans in closer to her.)

JACK: We've just got to learn to live with them.

(Gwen is quiet. Jack puts his arm around her shoulders, turns her and they look out at the
city.)

(Gwen puts her head on his shoulder as they wait for the sun to rise.)

FADE TO BLACK.
