SUMMARY: It's Gwen's first day at work and like the newbie she is, she
makes several clumsy mistakes and realizes that Torchwood does things a whole lot
differently than the real world does. On her first day, the team must track and capture an
alien who feeds off orgasmic energy, killing her partners in climax.

1X02: DAY ONE
==========================

THIS PROGRAM CONTAINS SOME SCENES OF A SEXUAL NATURE.

FADE IN:

[INTRODUCTION]

JACK HARKNESS: (v.o.) Torchwood, outside the government, beyond the police tracking
down alien life on earth, arming the human race against the future. The 21st Century is
when everything changes. And you've gotta be ready.

EXT. CARDIFF CITY LIGHTS (STOCK) – NIGHT

INT. BOWLING ALLEY -- NIGHT

(Rhys and Gwen are bowling. Rhys picks up a blue ball and knocks over all except three
pins.)

(Gwen uses the yellow bowling ball and knocks over one pin.)

(CUT TO: -- knocks over two pins -- )

(CUT TO: -- knocks over all the pins.)

(She shouts with joy!)

GWEN: Yes!

(Rhys can't believe it.)

EXT. CARDIFF CITY LIGHTS (STOCK) -- NIGHT

(Cardiff city at night. There's a background hum as if something were flying.)

INT. MOVIE THEATRE -- NIGHT

(Rhys and Gwen are exiting the theatre.)

GWEN: That is the last time you choose a film.

RHYS: I was told it was good.

GWEN: I feel asleep, Rhys.

EXT. CARDIFF CITY LIGHTS (STOCK) -- NIGHT

(More cardiff city at night.)

EXT. SIDEWALK CAFE -- NIGHT

(Rhys and Gwen talk.)

RHYS: What does it mean, "Special Ops"?

GWEN: It's no big deal. Mostly filing.

RHYS: Special admin, really.

GWEN: Can we talk about something else?

RHYS: Oh, come on, it's your first day tomorrow, I'm excited for you! Big
promotion.

GWEN: Secondment.

RHYS: You'll be brilliant.

(They smile at each other. Gwen is excited and Rhys is excited for her. She reaches across
the table and they kiss.)

GWEN: Let's have an early night.

RHYS: Check, please!

(Gwen giggles. The waitress leaves to get the check. Something catches Rhys' eyes.)

RHYS: Bloody hell! Is that plane on fire?

(Gwen's smile fades. A large ball of fire zooms across the sky. It moves very quickly
and appears to be crashing.)

(Everyone in the café notices the ball of fire in the night sky. Gwen stands up.)

GWEN: It's not a plane.

(It passes right above them. Gwen looks at Rhys. This is not good. She grabs her bag and
she starts to head out.)

RHYS: We haven't paid.

(She grabs Rhys' hand and pulls him with her.)

GWEN: Come on.

(She runs out of the café and into the sidewalk – and along the road – trying
to keep the ball of fire in the sky in her sights.)

(It passes overhead and crashes.)

BOOM!

RHYS: What was that?

(Gwen has no idea. Rhys puts a hand on her shoulder.)

(Gwen's phone beeps. She digs into her bag and checks it. She has:
1 NEW MESSAGE (size 9.48 Kb),
TORCHWOOD (size: 1.87 Kb).

(She turns to Rhys.)

GWEN: I've got to go to work.

ROLL TITLE CREDITS

FADE IN:

LOW TO GROUND

(Two sets of feet get into the Torchwood black SUV – one male, one female. The doors
slam shut. The vehicle takes off.)

EXT. ROAD -- NIGHT

(The Torchwood black SUV hurries out the drive.)

EXT. CARDIFF (STOCK) -- NIGHT

(TOP VIEW DOWN of Cardiff's highway.)

JACK: (v.o.) Simple locating clean up operation. Find that meteorite before anyone
else gets their hands on it.

INT. CAR (TRAVELING) – NIGHT

(Owen is driving. Jack glances back at Gwen.)

JACK: (to Gwen) Good to see you, by the way.

(Gwen smiles. It's apparent, she's thrilled to be there. Her eyes widen when the
computer equipment in the back unfolds into an impressive workstation for Toshiko.)

OWEN: Tosh, you found it yet?

GWEN: You got enough kit?

(On the monitor, a red dot blinks on the map.)

TOSHIKO: Basic tracking and surveillance.

GWEN: Hmm?

TOSHIKO: For the crash site. With this we can tap into CCTV networks, national
databases.

GWEN: Is this CRIMINT. This is the police computer system. You shouldn't have this!

(Toshiko is quiet.)

JACK: You might want to stop saying "you" and start saying
"we".

(They continue to head toward the crash site.)

EXT. CARDIFF HIGHWAY (STOCK) – NIGHT

(The black SUV turns right and continues down the road toward the crash site.)

INT. CAR (TRAVELING) -- NIGHT

(Toshiko keeps her eye on the red dot on the monitor.

(Owen continues driving.)

EXT. OFF ROAD – WOODS – NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS

(The SUV turns onto a side road.)

TOSHIKO: Crash site is one hundred meters ahead.

(Owen stops the car.)

OWEN: Shit. The amateurs got here first.

(Out in front of them, a truckload of military men exit the truck. Police have already
blocked the road and gather just outside the barrier.)

(Jack opens the car door, stands up and looks at what's happening. Everyone gets out
of the car.)

JACK: All right. Usual formation.

(Jack and the others start confidently for the barrier. Gwen rushes forward.)

GWEN: What's the usual formation?

OWEN: Varies.

GWEN: How can a usual formation vary?

(The police open the barriers for Jack and the team. Gwen turns and rushes to pick up her
kits. The police close the barrier after Jack and the others. Gwen runs after them.)

(Jack and the others head out behind the tent.)

(The officers let her through. Gwen heads for the tent.)

INT. CENTRAL OPERATIONS TENT – NIGHT - CONTINUOUS

(The tent is full of military men with guns. A group is seated around a central table with
various computer equipment and monitors set up. Gwen bursts in. The guard at the door
turns.)

PRIVATE MORIARTY: Who the hell are you?!

GWEN: Sorry!

(A second officer joins them. The two of them are very intimidating.)

SGT. JOHNSON: This area's restricted.

GWEN: No, it's all right, I'm with, uh, ... Special Ops. I'm Special Ops.
Torchwood? I'm with Torchwood.

SGT. JOHNSON: Don't mess with me, little girl. You're not with Torchwood. And even
if you were ...

(The tent back door opens and Jack walks up to them.)

JACK: You'd have put out the welcome banners! Now, first of all, she's no little
girl. From where I'm standing, all the right curves in all the right places. But she
is Torchwood. We both are. And we'd appreciate it if you'd leave us to do the real work.

(Jack holds out his hand to her.)

JACK: Shall we?

(Gwen takes his hand and they walk through the group of men and out the tent.)

EXT. CRASH SITE – NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS

(Jack leads Gwen to the crash site where the others already are working.)

JACK: So let's see what we came for.

(They take hold on the lead rope and head down into the crater. Small pockets of fire
liter the site. In the center of the crater is a large rock-like pod.)

(Lights have been placed around the pod for better view. Owen takes out a device and
examines the pod.)

JACK: What do we know?

OWEN: Bog standard space debris. (to Gwen) That's a technical term.

GWEN: Yeah, thanks.

JACK: So take all the readings and let's get out of here.

(Owen nods.)

(Jack and Toshiko each open up their impressively-stocked kits. Jack takes out some things
and tosses them over to Owen. Owen catches them all. Gwen leans on the side watching
everyone work.)

(Owen takes samples from the outer pod shell.)

(Owen uses a stethoscope to listen to the outer pod shell. He glances at Gwen who is still
standing there watching everyone work.)

(Jack takes a reading of the air.)

(Owen glances at Gwen.)

OWEN: Make yourself useful, sweetheart! Pass us the big chisel from the toolbox.

GWEN: Not sweetheart - Gwen. One syllable, sure you can manage it.

OWEN: Not sweetcheeks? Freckles? New Girl?

(Gwen reaches into the toolkit and takes out the big chisel.)

GWEN: It's a shame your tool's not big enough for the job, darlin'.

(Jack chuckles as he listens to them.)

GWEN: Catch!

(Gwen throws the chisel to Owen.)

OWEN: Don't!

(The chisel punctures a hole in the pod. A purple gas escapes out of the pod through the
large hole.)

OWEN: Shit!

(Jack reaches into the open kit at his feet and picks up a gas mask.)

JACK: Owen, catch!

(He tosses one to Owen, another to Toshiko and puts a mask on Gwen's stunned face
while he covers his own.)

JACK: Put this on!

(A large pinkish-purple cloud of living gas rises out of the pod. It spreads out and moves
around, pulsating for a moment, then zooms up into the night sky.)

(Jack turns and looks at Gwen. Gwen turns and looks at Owen. Owen glares back at Gwen.)

(We hold on Gwen.)

EXT. CARDIFF CITY LIGHTS (STOCK) – NIGHT

(Establish. Cardiff at night.)

EXT. SIDEWALK -- NIGHT

(The night is alive with couples going out and having a good time. Tucked away in an
alleyway is Carys. She's dressed to go out, but is on the phone crying instead.)

CARYS: (from voicemail) (upset) Eddie? Is this all I get now, your voicemail?
You're out with her, aren't you? You bastard, you could've had the decency to text.
I've been standin' in there all on my own. I'm sick of this hanging around all of the time
waiting for you to show up. I wish I'd never met you. I wish I was dead, no, I wish you
were dead. Call me back.

(Something approaches her from behind. Carys hangs up and turns around. She gasps as she
comes face to face with the moving purple gas.)

PURPLE CLOUD POV

(It moves toward Carys. Carys stares at it wide-eyed. She backs away from it.)

SIDE POV

(Carys bumps into the alleyway all. The purple cloud approaches her, getting closer and
closer. It branches off and surrounds her. Then finally she inhales it and the purple
cloud goes into Carys through her eyes, nose and mouth.)

EXT. OUTISDE CLUB ENTRANCE – CONTINUOUS

(The two bouncers stand outside the club entrance. A couple women walk past. The two
bouncers check the women out.)

BOUNCER: Hiya. Evening, ladies.

WOMAN: Hiya, handsome.

BANKSY (CLUB OWNER): Very nice.

(Carys exits the alleyway. She turns to head back into the club. There are three bouncers
standing there.)

BANKSY (CLUB OWNER): Where do you think you're going?

CARYS: I've been in once, I came out to make a call.

BANKSY (CLUB OWNER): There's no readmission.

(Carys grabs Banksy by his shirt and kisses him long and hard. When she lets him go,
he's got a stupefied look on his face. She waits expectantly.)

BANKSY (CLUB OWNER): Um, okay, then, on you go.

(He moves aside for her. Carys passes him and heads down the stairs into the club. He
watches her go.)

BANKSY (CLUB OWNER): Watch and learn, boys.

(He nods.)

INT. CLUB – NIGHT -- CONTINUOUS

(Loud music pulsates through the club. People dance with varying partners and with drinks
in their hand.)

(Matt walks up to the bar and looks around. He sees Carys. Carys sees him. Matt turns and
looks behind him thinking that she's looking at someone else. There's no one
else behind him.)

(She walks over to him.)

INT. CLUB – LADIES BATHROOM -- CONTINUOUS

(Carys pushes Matt into the bathroom and kisses him hard on the mouth and up against the
wall. There are other women in the bathroom touching up their make-up. They don't
care and they keep on kissing each other.)

(The women in the bathroom leave.)

MATT STEVENS: I don't even know your name.

(Carys puts his hands low on her hips and pushes her hips into his.)

MATT STEVENS: (mumbles) Overrated, names.

(They go back to kissing and kissing and more kissing. They move further into the
bathroom. He undoes his pants and she wraps her legs around him. He moves them over to the
sink.)

MATT STEVENS: I don't think ... I can ... hold on.

CARYS: Well, go on, then.

MATT STEVENS: Well, okay. Go on ... you're ... this is ... the best ... Oh, yeah!
Oh, oh, oh!

(As he climaxes, he dissolves into bright gold dust. She inhales him in and relishes the
high.)

(She looks down on the floor between her feet is a pile of dust.)

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – HUB -- NIGHT

(The team returns to the hub. Gwen is feeling very guilty about what happened.)

GWEN: I'm so sorry.

JACK: Seriously, stop saying that.

(She follows him up the steps to the office area.)

GWEN: But I am! I mean, really, I mean really, really sorry. God, I can't believe
it.

OWEN: Didn't they teach you Health and Safety in the police?

GWEN: You two chucked tools at each other, so I ...

OWEN: We didn't miss.

GWEN: I'll sort it. Whatever's happened, I'll deal with it.

(They walk past her to put the equipment down in COLD STORAGE 1-6.)

GWEN: What d'you think has happened? I mean, it was just gas, wasn't it? That can't
be too bad, can it?

OWEN: Right, because gas never did anyone any harm.

(Jack nods.)

JACK: On the plus side, we've got good evidence, relatively undamaged.

(He opens the box with a sample of the rock.)

OWEN: On the downside, there's an alien on the loose, we don't know where it is,
why it's here or what it's going to do.

TOSHIKO: Give her a break!

GWEN: God, this has been the worst first day ever.

JACK: We all make mistakes. Get over it. Now we find and recover whatever came out
of there.

(Ianto clears his throat. Every looks at him. He's standing at the top of the steps
with a clipboard.)

IANTO: This might help. Nightclub death been phoned in to 999. Circumstances sound
... a little unusual.

(Gwen hurries up the steps to look at the clipboard report.)

IANTO: Might be connected.

EXT. NIGHTCLUB – EARLY MORNING

(PC Alan is coming out of the nightclub. He stops at the top of the steps next to his new
partner.)

(Across the street, the Torchwood black SUV pulls up. Jack and the team get out and hurry
into the club past PC Alan.)

JACK: Torchwood.

(PC Alan looks up and sees Gwen.)

PC ALAN: Gwen?

GWEN: Hi!

PC ALAN: Bloody hell! Look at you, all posh. Special Ops! We were wondering.

GWEN: I meant to call. It's been a bit of a whirlwind.

PC ALAN: Go on, then, tell us all.

(Jack appears in the doorway.)

JACK: Coming?

GWEN: Yeah, sorry. (to Alan) You can get away now. No point you freezing your arse
off out here.

PC ALAN: Boss of me now, are you?

(Gwen turns and heads into the club. She stops and turns around.)

GWEN: Uh, say hi to everyone for me.

(Alan nods unenthusiastically. Gwen heads inside.)

INT. NIGHT CLUB – LADIES BATHROOM – EARLY MORNING

(The Torchwood team and the nightclub owner are stuffed in the ladies bathroom staring at
the pile of dirt on the floor.)

GWEN: This is all that's left?

(The club owner nods.)

BANKSY (CLUB OWNER): How's that possible?

JACK: The question is how did you know this used to be a body?

(Quick flash to: The club owner is in the security room jacking off to the security camera
monitor in the ladies bathroom showing Matt and Carys.)

BANKSY (CLUB OWNER): Go on, son! With you all the way!

(ON CLUB OWNER: Suddenly he stops. He's shocked by what he sees.)

BACK TO SCENE.

BANKSY (CLUB OWNER): Bit of a shock, I tell you.

JACK: We need to see that CCTV.

(The club owner nods.)

INT. NIGHT CLUB – SECURITY ROOM

(The team watches the video. On it, they see Matt climax, burst into bright gold dust and
get sucked into Carys.)

JACK: Wow.
TOSHIKO: Oh, my God! He just ...

JACK: (deadpans) Came and went.

(Owen snickers.)

OWEN: That's the way I'd like to go.

TOSHIKO: I'm sure we could arrange it.

(The club owner appears upset. Gwen does too.)

BANKSY (CLUB OWNER): How can that be? It doesn't make any sense. It's not possible.

GWEN: Do you know the girl's name? (He shakes his head.) Did the two of them arrive
together or meet in the club? Is she a regular? Would any of the other staff know her?

BANKSY (CLUB OWNER): (defensive) I dunno! We get hundreds of people here every
weekend. I don't keep tabs.

(Jack steps forward.)

JACK: Thanks for your help. We've got all we need.

(Jack leads the club owner out of the room.)

GWEN: What are you talking about? We haven't got a clue. We don't even know her
name!

(Jack looks at Gwen and doesn't say anything. He turns and leaves the room.)

INT. NIGHT CLUB -- CONTINUOUS

(The team emerges from the back rooms. They move fast as Jack issues instructions.)

JACK: We'll need a body from the cryo-chamber, close match to the dead
guy's appearance. Disfigure the face, dump it someplace remote, make it look like a
suicide attempt.

(Toshiko and Owen hurry past and head out. Gwen stops.)

GWEN: You have a stash of bodies?

(Jack pauses. He doesn't answer her and heads out himself. Gwen turns and follows
him.)

EXT. NIGHT CLUB – ALLEYWAY -- MORNING -- CONTINUOUS

(Jack is following a reading on his hand-held device. He runs out of the club and into the
alleyway. Gwen chases after him.)

GWEN: What about his family? You can't just fake his death.

JACK: You want to tell his family he died screwing an alien?

GWEN: We don't know that for sure.

(He points to the readings on his hand-held device.)

JACK: Same elements we recorded at the crash site. Traces all over the club but
strongest in this area. Something happened here.

(Jack points to the very spot where the gas alien attacked Carys. He looks around and sees
the CCTV camera up on the wall.)

INT. NIGHT CLUB – SECURITY ROOM

(Jack and Gwen are watching the video of Carys in the alleyway.)

(Jack finds the tape and pops it out of the machine. Gwen is quiet.)

GWEN: It's my fault. If it weren't for me, he'd still be alive.

JACK: That'll get you nowhere, that sort of thinking. At least now we know a little
more. The alien's taken on a host body.

GWEN: We can't let her kill again.

EXT. CARDIFF CITY (STOCK) -- DAY

(Nice aerial shot of the city. Lovely background music.)

EXT. STADIUM (STOCK) -- DAY

EXT. FLETCHER RESIDENCE (STOCK) -- DAY

INT. FLETCHER RESIDENCE -- DAY

(Ivan Fletcher is in the kitchen while Carys sits at the dining room table nursing a cup
of coffee. She stares out into space in front of her, not really paying attention to what
he's saying to her.)

IVAN FLETCHER: I said to them, you're putting yourselves out of work, behaving like
this. I can get five Polish lads who don't take any breaks, happy as sand boys, all for 56
quid above board. (He comes out with a plate of toast.) I told Niall, I said, "Why
should I bother with your moaning mates when I can get this?" (He stops in front of
her.) Carys?

CARYS: Dad?

IVAN FLETCHER: Hangover from hell, is it? What did you get up to last night?

CARYS: I can't really remember. Mullered, I was.

(He puts his plate down and grabs his jacket off the open door. He puts it on.)

IVAN FLETCHER: (sighs) Gotta go. Tony needs the van by nine. You in tonight?

(Carys nods quietly. He kisses the top of her head. )

(We hold on Carys still staring out in front of her. She closes her eyes slowly.)

INT. TORCHWOOD -- HUB

(Jack is using a penlight on the clearboard map of the universe.)

GWEN: So, what's this supposed to do?

JACK: I'm using satellite-tracking data to determine the inward trajectory of the
meteorite.

TOSHIKO: He means he's trying to find out where it's come from.

JACK: Hey! Sometimes techno babble is good for the soul.

GWEN: So this is a route planner.

TOSHIKO: Not far off.

GWEN: Rhys, my boyfriend, is a transport manager. He does this sort of stuff. On a
slightly smaller scale, though.

TOSHIKO: You have a boyfriend?

GWEN: Yeah. Have you?

TOSHIKO: (shakes her head) Don't have time with this job.

GWEN: (to Owen) What about you? You seeing anyone?

OWEN: You've gotta be joking. I can get all the grief I need here.

(Jack listens quietly to the conversation as he works.)

GWEN: None of you have partners?

OWEN: Just you, newbie.

GWEN: I'm not being rude or anything, but ... Well, maybe I am, but ... how do you
switch off from all this stuff? What do you do to relax?

(Jack looks at Owen who looks at Toshiko.)

OWEN: I torture people in happy relationships.

INT. FLETCHER RESIDENCE – BATHROOM -- DAY

(Carys is crying in the shower.)

INT. TORCHWOOD -- HUB

(Toshiko is at her workstation running the video image of Carys in the alley through a
database.)

TOSHIKO: Gas traces confirmed as Vorax and Suranium.

JACK: Great, my two favorite gases. Can we do a check, and find out what we know
about them?

OWEN: I'm all over it.

(Ianto comes into the hub carrying a tray of cups for everyone. Jack takes a cup.)

GWEN: What's this doing?

TOSHIKO: I've taken an image of the girl from the CCTV. This cross-checks her face
with the UK population.

GWEN: You can't have every face in the UK on there. That would be against civil
liberties, data protection, all that stuff ...

(Toshiko stops and glances back at Jack.)

JACK: (drolly) Still doing that "you" instead of "we" thing.

(He sips from his cup.)

(The computer finishes the scan. It reads:
119 POSSIBLE MATCHES.)

OWEN: Ah. A hundred and nineteen suspects. This thing's supposed to give us a
single match.

TOSHIKO: The CCTV was too low res. I've tried magnifying and augmenting but it just
breaks up. Which means that the software can't function properly.

IANTO: It's narrowed the numbers down. I could check through the rest. You know,
the old fashioned way - with my eyes.

(He points to his eyes.)

GWEN: What about the fingerprints I took off the alley wall?

(Toshiko runs the print – NO MATCH FOUND.)

TOSHIKO: It was a long-shot, anyway.

OWEN: Just a bit.

GWEN: Least I'm trying to do something.

OWEN: No, you're trying anything.

JACK: The CCTV must have picked up her arrival at the club. Tosh, can you reformat
the image recognition software to trace her journey backwards via the street camera
network?

TOSHIKO: It'll take a while to process. Every possible turn on every street corner
means hundreds of thousands of probabilities.

JACK: Have a go. At least we'll know where she started the evening.

GWEN: We could cross reference that with the addresses on the remaining face
matches.

OWEN: (snaps his fingers) Good one, newbie! That's a bit more like it!

INT. FLETCHER RESIDENCE – CARYS' BEDROOM -- DAY

(Carys brushes her wet hair as she sits on the bed in her pink terry cloth bathrobe.
Suddenly, she's hit with pain.)

CARYS: Ah!

(She looks at her reflection in the mirror. Another stab of pain hits her.)

CARYS: Ah!

(She takes short panting breaths and looks at herself in the mirror, hoping it'll
stop. Another stab of pain hits her.)

CARYS: Ah! (She looks at the mirror.) No!

(The doorbell rings.)

EXT. FLETCHER RESIDENCE – FRONT DOOR -- DAY

(Carys opens the door. The delivery man holds the box out to her.)

GAVIN: You're keeping our website in business.

(Carys looks at the box. Then looks at the delivery man. She grabs the delivery man and
pulls him into the house.)

INT. FLETCHER RESIDENCE – FOYER / LIVING ROOM -- DAY

(Carys moves quickly. She undoes his belt and pulls it off him.)

GAVIN: Well, your, er, dad's not in, then?

CARYS: Get your clothes off!

(She unfastens his pants and pushes them down. She then pulls him toward the sofa and
pushes him down on it.)

GAVIN: Steady, Carys!

(She climbs on him and straddles him. She grinds herself over him. He sits up.)

GAVIN: All right, that's enough. Joke over. Barry's put you up to this, has he?

CARYS: Shut up!

(She pushes him back down.)

(The door bursts open. Jack and Toshiko rush into the room with their guns aimed at Carys.
Both are wearing white jumpsuits and gas masks.)

(The back door bursts open. Gwen and Owen rush into the room with their guns aimed at
Carys. They, too, are wearing white jumpsuits and gas masks.)

(Gavin looks at all of them.)

GAVIN: What's going on?!

JACK: Put your trousers on and get out. (shouts) NOW!

(Gavin gets up and leaves.)

JACK: It always breaks my heart to say those words.

(Carys watches as Toshiko takes a reading with her hand-held device.)

TOSHIKO: Air quality's okay.

(Gwen looks down to remove her gas mask. Jack and Toshiko also remove their gas masks.
Carys takes advantage and runs past Gwen and heads for the back door.)

(Jack looks up just in time to see her heading out of the room.)

JACK: (shouts) Gwen, look out!

(Gwen turns, but Carys is already past her. Owen, who is standing on the stairs in the
other room, turns and sees Carys heading for the back door. He tosses a flat
seashell-shaped object on the floor in front of her.)

(A containment unit pulsating with energy confines Carys in a make-shift cell.)

GWEN: What's that?

OWEN: It's a sort of inflatable cell. Power runs down after an hour. The battery
life's bollocks.

JACK: Who said you could use that?

OWEN: Um, I just stopped a prisoner escaping.

JACK: You know the rules. None of that stuff leaves the building without my
expressed permission.

OWEN: (disgruntled) Fine. Don't thank me.

(Jack steps forward and presses some buttons on his watch band. The inflatable cell
vanishes. Gwen grabs Carys and leads her back into the living room.)

GWEN: Come with us.

(Jack steps forward and picks up the inflatable cell. He looks at Owen as he heads for the
living room as well.)

INT. CARDIFF CITY (STOCK) – DAY

(TOP VIEW DOWN of the city. Various shots. Theme music playing in the background.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – HUB -- DAY

(The front door lights flash. The gates open. Owen, Toshiko, Gwen with Carys, and Jack
walk in.)

(Owen and Toshiko head upstairs. Jack heads upstairs leaving Gwen with Carys.)

JACK: See what you can find out from her.

(Gwen stops Jack.)

GWEN: But aren't you going to help me? I don't know what I'm doing.

JACK: Usually better if you don't say that in front of the prisoner.

(Jack heads upstairs leaving Gwen with Carys. Gwen pulls Carys off screen.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – CELLS – DAY

(Gwen places Carys in a dark cell and closes the door. Carys looks at Gwen who is standing
on the other side of the glass.)

CARYS: Are you MI-5?

(Gwen doesn't say anything.)

CARYS: Where am I? What do you want?

GWEN: I think you know, Carys.

CARYS: How d'you know my name? I've never been in trouble. What do you want from
me?

GWEN: I know there's something living inside you and I know what it made you do.
His name was Matt Stevens. His parents lost their only child at 3:07 this morning.

(Suddenly, Carys screams and slams backward into the cell wall.)

CARYS: (screams) Ah! Ah!

(She stops and slowly turns to look at Gwen. This is not Carys anymore. This is the alien.
She steps closer toward the glass.)

CARYS: You broke my ship.

GWEN: Come on then. Where are you from and why are you trying to invade earth?
Because you can forget about enslaving us.

CARYS: Who said anything about enslaving?

GWEN: Well, that's what you lot do. Aliens. Isn't it?

CARYS: No, I just want the energy. The climax. I live off that energy.

GWEN: Right, sorry, just to recap. You've traveled here to feed off orgasmic
energy?

CARYS: There's nothing else out there like it. You taste so good. You're the best
hit there is.

(Carys screams from pain and falls backward against the wall.)

CARYS: Ah! Ah! No! Ah!

(Gwen watches as Carys slowly gets up and is then flung high against the opposite wall.
The alien is fighting inside her.)

CARYS: Ah!

(Gwen watches wide-eyed as Carys hits the wall hard and falls to the ground.)

(Gwen opens the door and rushes into the cell to check on Carys.)

CARYS: Help me. Please, get it out of me.

(Gwen helps Carys to her feet. They stop and look at each other.)

GWEN: Carys?

(Carys moves swiftly. She turns Gwen up against the wall and kisses her hard.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS -- CONTINUOUS

(Everyone is working. Owen is at his workstation, Jack is by Toshiko at her workstation.
Owen glances up at the monitors and stops.)

OWEN: Hel-lo.

(On the monitor, he sees Carys and Gwen kissing. He's transfixed.)

OWEN: Happy birthday, me.

(Owen stops working and leans back in his seat, his hands behind his head as he enjoys the
show.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – CELL -- CONTINUOUS

(Gwen and Carys are still kissing.)

GWEN: Okay, first contact with an alien. Not quite what I expected.

(While Carys may have instigated it, Gwen suddenly takes control. She turns them around
and pushes Carys back up against the wall. They continue kissing.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS -- CONTINUOUS

(Owen zooms in the security camera for a close-up of Gwen and Carys kissing.)

OWEN: Oi, you lot ... (He motions to the monitor.) Treat!

(Jack and Toshiko head over. Gwen is still kissing Carys.)

OWEN: Whoa.
JACK: Wow.
TOSHIKO: She said she had a boyfriend.

JACK: You people and your quaint little categories.

(Owen smiles. He's enjoying this far too much.)

TOSHIKO: We should really get her out of there.

JACK: (absently) Yeah.

(Then what Toshiko says sinks in and he moves.)

JACK: I mean, yeah! Come on!

(Jack runs out of area. Toshiko turns and follows him. Owen starts to get up, but stops.)

OWEN: Just, uh, ... record a bit first.

INT. TORCHWOOD – CELL -- CONTINUOUS

(Carys and Gwen are still kissing. Carys reaches down and frantically undoes Gwen's
blouse. She looks down and sees breasts. She stops.)

CARYS: No!

(Gwen leans forward and kisses Carys, but the alien isn't interested. She pushes Gwen
away from her.)

CARYS: It's no good.

(Gwen leans forward again and again kisses Carys. Carys pushes Gwen away.)

CARYS: It's got to be a man.

(Gwen looks at Carys, then looks down at herself. She sees her blouse open. She turns away
and buttons up.)

CARYS: Ah! Oh!

(Carys is hit with another wave of pain. She clutches her head and looks at Gwen.)

CARYS: I'm losing. Promise me you'll help me. Promise me.

(Then the alien takes over. Carys looks at Gwen. Gwen's phone rings.)

GWEN: I promise.

(She takes it out and backs out of the cell. She closes the door.)

GWEN: (to phone) Hi.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. GWEN'S FLAT -- DAY

(Rhys is on the phone.)

RHYS: You're not still at work?

(She turns and sees Jack and Toshiko run up to the hallway door to check on her. Jack
looks at her. She gives him a thumb's up sign. Jack and Toshiko turn and leave.)

GWEN: 'Fraid so.

RHYS: 'What time will you be done?'

GWEN: Not sure when I'll be finished, 'tho.

RHYS: Is it exciting, though, have you had loads of excitement?

GWEN: Erm, some.

RHYS: Er sorry, yeah, is now a good time?

GWEN: Em, maybe not the best.

RHYS: Oh, pity me, I'm a Special Ops widow.

GWEN: I'll call you later.

RHYS: Bye.

(Gwen hangs up and leans back against the dark cell across the hall to Carys. She closes
her eyes and holds the phone against her chest. She rests a moment.)

BAMM!

(The weevil inside the cell snarls and hits the cell door, startling Gwen. She screams.
Gwen turns and clutches the phone to her as she stares at the weevil. She'd forgotten
it was there.)

(Gwen heads for the door at the end of the hallway. She turns and walks past Carys'
cell. She slows down and looks at Carys. Gwen heads out and closes the hallway door behind
her.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS -- CONTINUOUS

(Gwen returns to hub quiet and thoughtful. Clearly, she's disturbed by Carys'
predicament. Owen claps.)

OWEN: Way to go, newbie! That is what I call a methodical investigation.

(Gwen turns and sees Owen against the railing.)

OWEN: I can't wait to see you take down her particulars.

(Gwen rushes up the stairs and grabs Owen by his shirt. She pushes him back against the
railing.)

OWEN: What are you doing?! Get off me!

GWEN: That girl's body is being overrun by I don't know what. And you think it's a
joke?

OWEN: All right! Jesus! I'm sorry.

GWEN: We should be helping her. She's not some lab rat.

OWEN: No, she's a murderer. You were the one who wanted her caught. How come
suddenly she's your best friend?

(Jack steps into view behind and between them.)

JACK: You know, strictly speaking, throttling the staff is my job.

(Gwen stares at Owen. Then, she releases him.)

(Down below, Ianto appears next to Toshiko. He's carrying a box of takeout. He
smiles.)

IANTO: So ... who's for Chinese?

(Owen continues down the stairs.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – CONFERENCE ROOM -- CONTINUOUS

(Everyone is sitting at the conference table eating dinner. They're laughing and
having dinner.)

JACK: And she said ... she said, "If I'd known that's what he was, I never
would have married him!"

TOSHIKO: She knew! She knew all along!

OWEN: She didn't care.

IANTO: Until he started leaving black piles of mucus in the bathtub.

(Jack picks up his glass.)

JACK: Always the big giveaway. Aliens have no sense of household hygiene. (He takes
a sip of his glass, puts it down and stands up.) Which reminds me, gotta pee.

(Jack leaves the room. As soon as Jack's out of hearing range, they turn their
attention to Gwen.)

OWEN: So what's he told you?

GWEN: What about?

TOSHIKO: Himself!

GWEN: You've been here longer than I have.

TOSHIKO: We were banking on you!

OWEN: You're a copper, trained to ask questions.

GWEN: You don't know anything?

OWEN: Not who he is, not where he's from. Nothing, except him being gay.

GWEN: No, he's not. Really, do you think?

TOSHIKO: No. Owen does. I don't.

IANTO: And I don't care.

OWEN: Period military is not the dress code of a straight man.

GWEN: I think it suits him. Sort of classic.

TOSHIKO: Exactly! I've watched him in action. He'll shag anything if it's gorgeous
enough.

GWEN: We know he's from America, right?

OWEN: We don't even know that for sure.

TOSHIKO: No US citizen by the name of Jack Harkness born in the last fifty years.

GWEN: Maybe his identity's classified.

(She picks up a chip and nibbles on it.)

IANTO: Used to be something big in the CIA. That's what I reckon.

GWEN: He must have his reasons for wanting to keep things secret.

OWEN: Sure he has. Doesn't stop me wanting to know what they are.

(In the background, they hear the faint moans of a woman crying.)

GWEN: What's that sound?

(Everyone quiets down. Owen reaches for the remote on the center of the table. He turns
the monitor on.)

(On the monitor, Carys is on her hands and knees in her cell and she's crying.)

(Jack returns to the room and sits down. Gwen's eyes are on the monitor. She gets up
and walks over to the screen.)

GWEN: What are we doing having Chinese while a girl fights for her life?

JACK: Actually, while we've been eating, the computers have been running a full
bio-scan on Carys, profiling her blood, metabolism, organs, skin, the works. So we can see
what effect the alien's having on her. They've also been taking samples of the air in the
cell so we can analyze any changes in the environment around her. Now, is that enough? Do
you want more? Cos, uh, it gets kinda boring.

GWEN: You've been hidden down here too long. Spending so much time with the alien
stuff, you've lost what it means to be human.

JACK: So remind us. Tell me what it means to be human in the 21st century.

GWEN: All right.

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS -- CONTINUOUS

(Gwen is at Suzie's old workstation. She opens the laptop and adjusts the lighting.)

VARIOUS CUTS OF GWEN GATHERING INFORMATION ABOUT CARYS

(Photos of Carys flash on the screen. She prints out the email.)

(Cut to: More photos of Carys at various ages flash on the screen.)

(Cut to: She gathers the stack of printouts and goes through them. The top-most are dental
photos.)

(Cut to: Gwen works on putting the information together.)

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – JACK'S OFFICE

(Gwen reports back to Jack, giving him a profile on Carys.)

GWEN: Carys Fletcher, born 13th November, 1987. School reports, personnel files
from her temping agency, swimming badges from when she was six, reports of her mother's
death in a car crash when she was ten. And last year's emails discussing the merits
of Orlando Bloom and Heath Ledger.

JACK: Why have you done this?

GWEN: This isn't about meteorites or gases. We have a trapped girl and we have to
save her. When I was with her in the cell, Carys told me she was losing. We have to find a
way to keep her fighting, remind her to hold on to who she is.

(Jack is quiet as he stares at her.)

GWEN: Have I got something on my face?

JACK: No. Uh ... Just, it's ... brilliant. (He looks at the information on the
board.) You are brilliant.

GWEN: Thank you. So I think we should bring in her dad.

JACK: You're kidding, right.

GWEN: We've got to find something to connect with her. Make her fight back.

JACK: Our priority is to contain the alien threat. Not put civilians in a cell with
it.

GWEN: We should be helping her.

JACK: Then there is no way --

GWEN: (interrupts) If we don't, who will, Jack?

JACK: Are you always this awkward?

TOSHIKO: (o.s., from comm) You should take a look at this.

(Jack turns around.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS -- CONTINUOUS

(Toshiko shows Jack and Gwen what she's found from the data analysis.)

TOSHIKO: This is the normal chemical composition of the air in that cell. And these
... are the readings from the last hour. The alien's secreting an ultra-powerful blend of
airborne pheromones.

(Gwen and Jack stare at her.)

TOSHIKO: (clarifies) Sex pheromones. A thousand times more potent than anything
we'd normally experience.

JACK: She's a walking aphrodisiac!

GWEN: I did wonder why I ... (They look at her.) Actually, I sort of snogged her.

JACK/TOSHIKO: We know.

JACK: Now, still wanna put her father in the cell?

GWEN: God, no! We can't let any man near ...

(Toshiko turns and looks at Gwen. They've got the same thought.)

TOSHIKO/GWEN: Owen!

CUT TO:

INT. TORCHWOOD – CONTAINMENT CELLS -- CONTINUOUS

(Toshiko and Gwen run into the hallway. They find Owen standing naked in the center of
Carys' cell. He's handcuffed.)

TOSHIKO: (to comm.) Jack, Carys is out of her cell.

OWEN: Cheeky bitch took my swipe card!

JACK: (from comm) I'll deal with it. And tell Owen he needs to work on those abs a
bit harder.

(They open the cell door. Owen steps out.)

OWEN: I was taking some readings, you know, keeping an eye on her, and bang.

TOSHIKO: You got away lightly. Be thankful she was only interested in your swipe
card.

GWEN: Are you all right now? Or are you still feeling a bit of a cock?

(Toshiko giggles.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – HUB -- CONTINUOUS

(Carys cautiously makes her way out through the stairs and through the hub.)

(Jack walks down the stairs and bars her way out.)

JACK: No exit, sorry.

(Carys looks around. She turns and runs for the door. The doors don't open. Jack
steps toward her, the table full of hand-to-hand combat weapons between them. He dodges
one way, she dodges the other, the table between them.)

(Carys and Jack both look down at the table realizing what's on it. Carys grabs a
mean-looking baton and swings at Jack. He dodges the swing. She swings again and misses
him.)

JACK: Yeah? You want a little rough and tumble? Huh?

(He grabs what looks like a wooden samurai sword.)

JACK: Well, let's make it a fair fight.

(They move back ward the hub center. Jack corners her up against the central column, the
wooden sword tip at her shoulder. Carys swings low and hits Jack in the knee, knocking him
aside. He goes down for a moment.)

JACK: Ahh!

(Carys steps aside. Jack follows her. She backs up the stairs. She swings Jack blocks. She
swings again and breaks the iron chains lining the side of the stairs. Jack knocks the
baton out of her hands. She jumps up to the platform and pushes an office chair at Jack.)

CARYS: You won't stop me.

(They face off. Carys dashes across the platform for the other set of stairs. Jack jumps
down the stairs and blocks her exit as she runs down the stairs. They face off again.)

(Carys looks around and sees the dismembered hand in the tank of bubbling liquid. She
picks it up.)

JACK: Put it down! That's worthless to anyone but me.

(She uses it as a shield in front of her and edges toward the door. Jack hedges around
her.)

JACK: Down now!

(He takes his gun out.)

JACK: Or I'll shoot.

CARYS: Says he will but the eyes say he won't. I'm going. Don't stop me.

(She backs up to the door. Jack doesn't shoot, his gun still on her. Carys' face
contorts in pain.)

CARYS: (whimpers) Please help me.

(Jack holds on the gun on Carys. The door closes between them.)

(Jack runs out to the stairs.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – STAIRS -- CONTINUOUS

(Jack runs up the stairs.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – CORRIDOR -- CONTINUOUS

(The elevator door opens. Carys turns around and runs out into the long, dark hallway
leading to the shop.)

(Jack reaches the hallway and runs after her.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – COVER SHOP -- CONTINUOUS

(Ianto steps out from behind the counter. He is surprised to see Carys step out into the
shop. She's still holding the hand in the container.)

(Right after her, Jack steps out, his gun pointed at her.)

IANTO: Need me to do any attacking, sir?

JACK: Appreciate the offer. Just open the door.

(Jack puts his gun away. Ianto presses the button. The door opens. Carys looks at the
door. Jack holds out his hands.)

JACK: Now give me the jar.

(Carys looks at the door and at Jack. She throws the container over the counter and dashes
out the door.)

JACK: NO!

(Jack jumps over the counter. Ianto stands there.)

(Gwen and Toshiko exit the corridor into the shop. Gwen looks over the counter and sees
Jack with the severed hand. The fingers are moving.)

(Toshiko runs out the door to check on Carys.)

(We hold on Jack with the severed hand.)

EXT. MILLENNIUM CENTRE – DAY -- CONTINUOUS

(Gwen and Toshiko are running out the store. Gwen runs down the wharf. Toshiko runs up the
stairs to check the upper level.)

VARIOUS CUTS OF: GWEN RUNNING & OF TOSHIKO RUNNING

(Toshiko stops and looks around the area. There's no sign of Carys anywhere.)

(Gwen stops running and looks around the area. There's no sign of Carys anywhere.)

TOP VIEW DOWN (STOCK)

(Stock view of the center. Camera rises up and back to give a view of the entire area.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – HUB

(The severed hand is back safely in the container of bubbling liquid. Jack is sitting in
front of it while Gwen stands next to him, lecturing him. Toshiko is back at her
workstation.)

GWEN: After all I said, a severed hand is more important to you than Carys' life.

JACK: You want to prove yourself? Find her. Get your old pals in the police to do
something useful for once.

GWEN: All right, I'll give them a call. Put out an APB - woman possessed by gas
knobbing fellas to death.

(Jack rolls his eyes. Owen runs out of COLD STORAGE 1-6 and interrupts them all.)

OWEN: Oi! You'd better get in here!

(Owen runs back down into COLD STORAGE while the others remain up at the top of the steps.
He explains to them his findings.)

OWEN: So I'm trying to interpret the results of the bio-scan. Yeah, but it's just a
mess, like there's no definitive readings. Because everything in her body keeps changing,
nothing stays constant. So, as soon as you think you've got something clear, the metabolic
rate, the blood pressure all goes wild again.

JACK: She's fighting the alien for control of her own body.

OWEN: Yeah. So anyway, I decided to do a comparative diagnostic. Uh, recreate the
circumstances, accelerate the process a little, see what's gonna happen to Carys.

GWEN: Yeah, thanks.

(Owen has a rat in a tank.)

OWEN: I infected the rat with a combination of the Vorax and Suranium gas traces we
found down at the crash site and at the nightclub.

TOSHIKO: Looks fine so far.

OWEN: Once the gases start to flow round the body, the party really starts.

(Owen goes partway up the steps to where the scans and readings of the rat and its insides
are projected on the wall.)

OWEN: The heart rate triples. The brain swells, pressing against the skull. And as
that keep going, then the lungs began to shrink, making it impossible to breathe. The
pressure increases on all the internal organs until ...

(The unsuspecting rat goes about its business in the tank. Suddenly, it explodes.)

OWEN: Rat jam!

JACK: That's what's gonna happen to Carys?

GWEN: "I'm losing", that's what she said to me.

OWEN: Right now, it's a struggle between where Carys ends and the alien begins.

EXT. STREET -- DAY

(Carys is out walking. She's in a daze and watches enviously as a couple kiss as they
walk past her. She turns around to watch them and sees that the man has his hand on the
woman's bum.)

(She continues walking. Everywhere she looks there are posters of naked men, suggestive
ads, and an ad of a naked man standing in front of the bathroom counter.)

(She continues walking.)

VARIOUS CUTS OF:

(She's bombarded by the large suggestive posters and advertising. )

(Carys continues walking.)

INT. TORCHWOOD – WORKSTATIONS

(Gwen thinks out loud.)

GWEN: We have to think like her. Put ourselves in her place. It's the only way to
find her.

JACK: Except we don't know what her controlling impulse is by now - Carys or the
alien inside. The last thing I saw was a fight for control.

TOSHIKO: The overriding factor for the parasite is to have sex. It's a survival
instinct - that's bound to be the strongest drive.

GWEN: All right, so you're Carys. You're desperate for sex cos that's what the
thing inside you needs, but you know it will kill. Where would you go?

OWEN: I'd come round and shag you. (Everyone turns and looks at Owen.) What?! It's
a joke! Can't I have a joke with my team-mates?

TOSHIKO: Right now? No.

JACK: So what are we talking about? Brothels? Lap dance clubs? Anywhere there's
eager men?

TOSHIKO: I know what I'd do.

EXT. CARDIFF (STOCK) -- DAY

(Lovely aerial shot of the area.)

EDDIE: (v.o.) What the hell are you doing here? You look a bit wired.

INT. EDDIE'S PLACE -- DAY

(Carys walks through the hallway. Eddie follows her.)

CARYS: I had to see you.

EDDIE: You should've called. Bethan might've been in.

CARYS: I could kill you.

EDDIE: I could bloody kill you! What the hell was that message you left on my
mobile last night? Sounded like you were off your face.

(She walks into his bedroom.)

CARYS: If I wanted to, I could kill you ... now.

EDDIE: Look, I've told you. I'm not leaving Bethan. You're a lovely girl, but it's
just not gonna happen.

CARYS: You were my first, see. I never told you cos I thought you'd laugh. And
you're crap. All you want is to come and you don't care what's underneath.

EDDIE: Go on, have a go. Get it out of your system.

(Carys cries out in pain. She doubles over and clutches her stomach.)

CARYS: Ah!

(She looks at Eddie intently. Eddie has no clue what's going on.)

CARYS Do you love me, Eddie? Did you ever love me?

EDDIE: No.

ALIEN (IN CARYS): You could've saved yourself.

EDDIE: What?

(She grabs Eddie, kisses him and straddles him.)

EXT. CARDIFF (STOCK) -- SUNSET

(It's sunset in Cardiff.)

EXT. EDDIE'S BUILDING (STOCK) -- NIGHT

(Zoom in on a particular building.)

INT. EDDIE'S PLACE -- NIGHT

(The door bursts open. Jack and Gwen rush in. Gwen sees the pile of dust on the bed.)

GWEN: We're too late.

JACK: Tosh was right, though. She went for the ex-boyfriend. Lucky she's young.
Work your way through my back catalogue, we'll be here till the sun explodes.

(Jack leaves the room. Gwen follows him.)

GWEN: So, where's she gonna go next?

(They step out into the hallway.)

JACK: And how long before that thing destroys her body?

EXT. ROAD (STOCK) -- NIGHT

(The SUV zooms down the road.)

INT. SUV (TRAVELING) -- NIGHT

(Jack's driving.)

JACK: So what's our next move?

OWEN: Stop the entire city of Cardiff from shagging?

GWEN: Hm. Put bromide in the water supply.

JACK: No, too hit and miss.

OWEN: Yeah. The water company got pissed off last time we did that.

GWEN: It could have used any body in Cardiff. Why her?

TOSHIKO: I just assumed it was random.

JACK: It's mining Carys' life to get what it needs.

OWEN: So, what else do we know about her?

JACK: (to Gwen) Anything you can think of?

(Toshiko looks at Gwen.)

GWEN: What are you all looking at me for?

OWEN: You did all the profiling!

GWEN: I don't know. Sorry.

(Gwen looks out the window.)

OWEN: (mutters) She's really great under pressure.

JACK: There's gotta be something. What did you say Carys' job was?

GWEN: She's just a temp. Receptionist.

JACK: Where's she working at the moment?

TOSHIKO: I can pull her employment files up.

(Toshiko puts it in the computer and comes up with an answer.)

TOSHIKO: Conway Clinic.

OWEN: You're joking.

JACK: What's the problem?

OWEN: It's a bloody fertility clinic. Sperm donors. An unlimited supply of orgasmic
energy without all the build-up.

JACK: Perfect hit.

EXT. ROAD -- NIGHT

(Jack turns the SUV around and heads for the clinic.)

EXT SIDEWALK -- NIGHT

(Carys walks toward the clinic.)

INT. CONWAY CLINIC – LOBBY -- NIGHT

(The clinic is open. The receptionist at the desk looks up when the door opens. Carys
walks in and is hit with a wave of pain.)

CARYS: Ah!

RECEPTIONIST: Carys. You're not on today, are you?

(Carys looks at the receptionist and walks toward her.)

CARYS: It needs more. The energy - it's not lasting.

RECEPTIONIST: Sorry?

(Carys punches the Receptionist.)

INT. CONWAY CLINIC – LOBBY -- NIGHT

(There are four men waiting in the waiting room.)

CARYS: (o.s., over comm) Mr. Tunstall, room number one's ready now.

(Mr. Tunstall looks up and heads out.)

INT. CONWAY CLINIC – ROOM 1 -- NIGHT

(Mr. Tunstall closes and locks the room door. He's holding the specimen container. He
turns around and bumps into Carys. She grabs the container from him and tosses it over her
shoulder.)

INT. CONWAY CLINIC – HALLWAY -- NIGHT

(Behind the closed door, a man screams.)

EXT. ROAD (STOCK) -- NIGHT

(The Torchwood SUV zooms past.)

INT. SUV (TRAVELING) -- NIGHT

(Owen reaches over and hands Gwen a gun. She looks at it, then takes it.)

GWEN: What's this for?

JACK: Need a diagram?

GWEN: I've never used a gun.

JACK: You were in the police!

GWEN: I was on the beat!

JACK: Carry it. I'll make sure you don't need to use it.

(Owen snaps the cartridge into a second gun and hands it back to Toshiko. She takes it.)

INT. CONWAY CLINIC – NIGHT

(Carys faces Mr. Weston.)

MR. WESTON: I'm asking for you to get out!

CARYS: Just relax, I can help.

MR. WESTON: I don't think so, love, I'm gay.

EXT. ROAD (STOCK) – NIGHT

(The SUV speeds along the road.)

GWEN: (v.o.) What do we do if we find her? How are we going to get it out of her?

INT. SUV (TRAVELING) -- NIGHT

(Toshiko looks at Gwen.)

TOSHIKO: Judging by the test results, the gas needed a host because prolonged
exposure to our atmosphere is poisonous to it. But our bodies are the perfect environment.

JACK: So, if we isolate it from Carys' body ...

OWEN: It won't survive for long.

JACK: Sounds like we have ourselves a plan.

GWEN: Force it to die.

OWEN: Just like it did those poor blokes.

GWEN: What about Carys?

EXT. STREET -- NIGHT

OWEN: (v.o.) Better start praying we get to her in time.

(The Torchwood SUV turns the corner. It stops in front of the clinic. The team gets out of
the car and they head for the door, their guns out.)

JACK: (o.s.) Come on!

INT. CONWAY CLINIC – RECEPTION -- NIGHT

(The door bursts open. Jack and the team rushes into the room, their guns drawn. They
quickly go from room to room looking for Carys.)

JACK: Out! Now! Get as far away as you can!

(The guys in the room get up and leave.)

(Jack bursts into Room 1 and finds a black pile of dust on the floor. Gwen peers in over
his shoulder and sees the pile of dust.)

(Owen and Toshiko continue searching the other rooms.)

(Jack and Gwen burst into Room 2. They find a stack of magazines and a pile of black
dust.)

GWEN: Oh, God, how many more?

(Toshiko checks the rooms. She opens a door and finds a pile of black dust on the sofa.)

(She pushes the next room door open and finds a pile of black dust on the exam table.)

(She checks the next room and finds another pile of dust on the red chair.)

OWEN: (o.s.) In here!

(She heads downstairs. The others rush past her to get to Owen.)

INT. ROOM -- NIGHT

(Owen has his gun pointed at Carys who enters the room toward him. Jack enters the room
after her.)

JACK: Nowhere to run.

(Carys stops. She turns around just as Gwen and Toshiko also enter the room. She's
surrounded. Everyone but Gwen as their guns on Carys.)

CARYS: All this sex. All we see, all we think. So much beauty ... and so much fear.
We want it but we're so afraid of it ...

(She's hit with a wave of pain.)

CARYS: Ah!

(She falls to the floor. Gwen reaches for her and holds onto her.)

OWEN: The strain on her body's too much. Any second now, she's rat jam.

CARYS: One more and I'll be strong. Each time, it works less. Each time, the
feeling's weaker. One more. Make me feel alive. Make me feel human.

GWEN: I can't.

(Carys puts her head down.)

JACK: I can.

(Jack steps forward and puts his gun away.)

GWEN: Jack!

JACK: I've got a surplus of alive. I'm giving it away.

(Jack kneels down.)

JACK: You really want to feel something?

(And he kisses her. Carys glows.)

OWEN: What's he doing?

(Toshiko shakes her head.)

(And they kiss goes on and on and on. Carys stops glowing and the kiss ends.)

JACK: That was just the kiss. Imagine the buzz you get from the rest.

(Carys smiles at Jack and then she collapses.)

JACK: It wasn't exactly the reaction I anticipated.

OWEN: Her body won't last much longer.

(Gwen takes her bag off.)

GWEN: Use me. Leave Carys. Take my body as host. And just let her live.

(Jack grabs Gwen's arm.)

JACK: Gwen ...

GWEN: I'm stronger than she is. I'll last longer. You might be able to save me, I
don't know.

JACK: Okay.

(Jack stands up.)

TOSHIKO: Jack! You can't let her!

JACK: Like she said ... (He looks at Gwen.) She's responsible for this.

(Jack steps back.)

GWEN: Come on, then. Do it. Leave her.

(Gwen steps back.)

(Toshiko and Owen keep their guns on Carys.)

(Suddenly, Carys' eyes open and she gasps loudly. The gaseous alien comes out of her
mouth and hovers in the air -- over Carys -- in a purple living gaseous cloud.)

(Gwen backs away toward the doorway. She's scared, but she prepares herself to take
the alien.)

(ALIEN POV: The gaseous alien heads toward Gwen. Gwen shuts her eyes and braces herself.)

(Jack tosses the inflatable cell on the carpet. It opens and surrounds the creature
completely -- effectively trapping it mid-air. The creature roars.)

(Gwen opens her eyes. The gaseous creatures swirls around in the inflatable cell.)

OWEN: How long can it survive in there?

TOSHIKO: It was pretty weak. Why?

OWEN: Bit worried how long that battery'll last for.

(The cloud gets smaller.)

TOSHIKO: Look ... It's dying.

(The gaseous creature solidifies into dust, falling into a small pile on the floor.)

(The cell collapses.)

(Jack reaches down and picks up some of the dust in his hand.)

JACK: You travel halfway across the universe for the greatest sex. You still end up
dying alone.

(Jack shakes his head as he drops the dust. Suddenly Gwen reaches over and kisses Jack.)

GWEN: Thank you.

(She stands up just as quickly and steps out of camera frame leaving Jack where he is. He
watches her for a moment, then touches his lips.)

(We hold on Jack.)

[EXT. CARYS' HOUSE (STOCK) – NEXT DAY]

(It's a lovely day. Camera pans back and we see the Torchwood SUV parked on the side
of the road in front of a residence.)

[INT. FLETCHER RESIDENCE – DAY]

(Through the reflection in the door's glass window, we see Ivan Fletcher waiting with
Jack. Gwen returns home with Carys.)

(Jack is in the house standing behind Carys' dad. Her father gets up and looks at
her. Carys runs to him and they hug.)

(Gwen and Jack share a smile.)

[INT. TORCHWOOD HUB -- NIGHT]

(Gwen is removing the photos and information on the board about Carys.)

JACK: (o.s.) Still here?

(Gwen turns and sees Jack standing there.)

JACK: Everybody else is off doing ... whatever it is they do when they're not here.

GWEN: How long have you been there?

(Gwen puts the papers and things she's removing from the board down on the table. She
goes back to the board. Jack shrugs.)

GWEN: I wanted to finish off.

JACK: Do one thing for me. Don't let the job consume you. You have a life.
Perspective. We need that.

(Gwen puts the papers down and puts her hands on her hips as she faces Jack.)

GWEN: Who are you, Jack?

JACK: I'm sorry?

GWEN: You can't die. You tell me the 21st century is when it all changes, that we
have to be prepared.

JACK: So you do.

GWEN: But how can you know?

JACK: You think knowing the answers would make you feel better?

GWEN: Who are you? What are you doing here?

JACK: Go home, Gwen Cooper. Eat lasagne. Kiss your boyfriend. Be normal. For me.

CUT TO:

[INT. GWEN'S FLAT]

(Gwen and Rhys are eating lasagna. Gwen sips from her wine glass as Rhys talks. She's
barely paying attention.)

RHYS: So I said, those bloody website ... I've had years of experience. I know the
journeys, I've driven most of them, I know the best way. Am I boring you?

(She turns and looks at him.)

GWEN: Sorry.

RHYS: Too grand to care about transport routes now, are we?

(She smiles at him. They kiss.)

GWEN: Let's go to bed.

(Rhys smiles. And they get up.)

[EXT. CARDIFF (STOCK) -- DAY]

(Camera pulls out and away from the beautiful Cardiff bay area, out over the ocean for a
view of the city.)

FADE TO BLACK.
