DAY
OF THE
DALEKS

BY
LOUIS MARKS

EPISODE TWO

1: INT. CONTROL ROOM

(The GIRL TECHNICIAN at her station picks up the signal.)

GIRL TECHNICIAN: Sir?
CONTROLLER: Yes?
GIRL TECHNICIAN: We've picked up that time transmitter again.
CONTROLLER: You're sure?

(He steps over to her.)

GIRL TECHNICIAN: Yes, sir. Same frequency, same time...time zone. Much stronger now.
CONTROLLER: Right. I want the exact space-time co-ordinates so whatever happens, don't lose it!

(He steps over to his chair.)

2: INT. DALEKS CHAMBER

(His image appears on a screen high up on the wall in the DALEKS metallic chamber. Two grey DALEKS are in here together with the gold coloured CHIEF DALEK.)

CONTROLLER: (On monitor.) We have a fix on the time transfer device. It is operating again in the twentieth century time zone and it must be them.
CHIEF DALEK: You have obtained the space-time co-ordinates?
CONTROLLER: (On monitor.) We're trying now. The trace is much stronger this time. There is every chance...
CHIEF DALEK: (Interrupts.) You must not fail!
CONTROLLER: (On monitor.) Security forces are standing by. If we do get the co-ordinates, what are your instructions?
CHIEF DALEK: Whoever is operating the time machine is an enemy of the Daleks. All enemies of the Daleks must be destroyed! Exterminate them!

(The three DALEKS start to chant...)

DALEKS: Exterminate them! Exterminate them! Exterminate them!

3: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(The DOCTOR still has the nerve hold on SHURA when ANAT, gun raised, and BOAZ, holding JO'S arm pinioned behind her back enter the study from the hall.)

ANAT: Let him go.

(The DOCTOR does so and turns to face the guerillas.)

ANAT: Now then - turn off that machine.

4: INT. DALEKS CHAMBER

(A large curved metal door raises to the ceiling. The CONTROLLER is stood on the other side and enters the DALEK chamber from the control room. The CHIEF DALEK is waiting for him.)

CONTROLLER: I have to report that we have lost the trace. It was operating only a few moments.
CHIEF DALEK: We are not interested in excuses. Find them! Find them! Find them!

5: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(ANAT coolly looks the DOCTOR over as he stands at the point of SHURA'S gun.)

ANAT: So...you are the man. Outwardly so innocent looking but capable of such crimes. Who would ever know?
DOCTOR: My dear young lady, I'm afraid I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about.
ANAT: You have said and done enough. The time has come for your execution.
DOCTOR: Execution?
ANAT: Those are our orders.
DOCTOR: May I ask whose orders?
ANAT: It is no concern of yours. Shura...?

(SHURA walks round the DOCTOR and raises his gun at him. JO jumps up.)

JO: But he hasn't done anything! He's a scientist!

(BOAZ steps forward and pushes her back into a chair.)

ANAT: (To the DOCTOR.) No last words of repentance, Sir Reginald?

(The DOCTOR looks puzzled for a moment.)

DOCTOR: No, only that you're making one fundamental mistake...
ANAT: That is?
DOCTOR: A question of mistaken identity. I am not Sir Reginald Styles.
ANAT: Is that the best you can do?
JO: But it's true! Sir Reginald...
DOCTOR: (Interrupts.) Sir Reginald is at this moment many thousands of miles away - in Peking, to be precise.
ANAT: (Uncertain.) You are lying.
DOCTOR: No, I'm not. He flew there yesterday.

(ANAT still has a look of uncertainty on her face.)

ANAT: I do not believe you.
DOCTOR: It's all there in the paper in front of you. Why don't you take a look?

(He gestures to a newspaper on the desk. With SHURA still pointing her gun at the DOCTOR and ANAT also keeping hers trained, she reaches out a picks up the paper. She glances at it and passes it to SHURA who also looks over it. He nods at ANAT in confirmation.)

DOCTOR: I'm sorry to disappoint you. By the way, that, er, that machine of yours is a bit antiquated, isn't it? Do you mind if I suggest some improvements and...?
SHURA: (Interrupts.) Shut up!
BOAZ: It's a trick - kill him now!
ANAT: If you are not Sir Reginald Styles who are you and what are you doing in his house?
DOCTOR: Well, believe it or believe it not, I came here to see you.

(BOAZ steps forward and trains his gun on the DOCTOR. SHURA turns his on JO.)

BOAZ: We're wasting time, Anat. Here, I'll do it.
ANAT: (Angrily.) Who is in command of this mission?!

(She gently pushes BOAZ'S gun away.)

ANAT: We are soldiers, not murderers. Keep guard outside, I'll deal with these two.

(BOAZ doesn't move.)

ANAT: I said out!

(BOAZ, with reluctant dignity, moves to the hallway and shuts the door behind him.)

ANAT: Now then, answer my question - who are you and what are you doing here?

6: EXT. AUDERLY HOUSE

(CAPTAIN YATES waits with a jeep outside the main entrance to the house with some soldiers. SERGEANT BENTON walks up to the CAPTAIN and salutes.)

SERGEANT BENTON: Two men missing, sir.
CAPTAIN YATES: Are you sure?
SERGEANT BENTON: I'm positive. I've doubled checked and there are two men missing.
CAPTAIN YATES: From the patrol?
SERGEANT BENTON: Yes sir. Now there's just one possibility - they could be in the house. I mean, it's none too warm a day, is it, sir?
CAPTAIN YATES: Well, let's go and check.

(They move off.)

7: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(While SHURA keeps an eye on JO, ANAT'S interrogation of the DOCTOR continues...)

ANAT: Answer my question sensibly - how could you know we were coming?
DOCTOR: 'Cos you've already tried to kill Styles once and failed. It was logical that you would try again.
SHURA: And you deliberately took his place?
DOCTOR: That's right. I wanted to talk to you.
ANAT: Why?
DOCTOR: To find out where you came from. And more to the point - when.

(BOAZ comes back in.)

BOAZ: Two soldiers approach.
ANAT: Hide!

(ANAT runs into the hallway, while BOAZ pulls JO up and SHURA pushes the DOCTOR out.)

8: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. HALLWAY

(In the hallway, ANAT looks round. She spots a doorway under the stairs.)

ANAT: Down there!

(BOAZ pushes JO along while the DOCTOR calmly walks in front of SHURA.)

BOAZ: Hurry!

(BOAZ opens the door and the group walks through.)

9: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. CELLAR

(BOAZ switches on the light and the group starts to descend down the steps.)

ANAT: Stay where you are!

(They stop and she switches off the light.)

10: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. HALLWAY

(ANAT opens the door a fraction and listens as YATES and BENTON enter the hallway.)

CAPTAIN YATES: Doctor?! Jo?! Try the study, Benton.

11: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(BENTON enters the deserted study and looks round.)

SERGEANT BENTON: Doctor? Anyone there?

12: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. CELLAR

(JO tries to call out but BOAZ has his hand clamped over her mouth.)

13: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. HALLWAY

(YATES shouts up the stairway under which ANAT is still listening.)

CAPTAIN YATES: Doctor? Miss Grant?

(BENTON comes out of the study.)

SERGEANT BENTON: What do you make of it, sir?

(YATES takes out a pocket radio.)

CAPTAIN YATES: (Into radio.) Greyhound two to...

14: INT. UNIT HQ. DUTY ROOM

(The BRIGADIER is on the phone in the duty room as the RADIO OPERATOR receives YATES' message.)

CAPTAIN YATES: (Over radio.) ...trap one.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) I see, sir.
CAPTAIN YATES: (Over radio.) Greyhound two to trap one.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Well, I've already alerted my main personnel.
U.N.I.T. RADIO OPERATOR: (Into radio.) Trap one, over.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Oh yes, naturally, in a national emergency, we'll liaise with the defence forces.
U.N.I.T. RADIO OPERATOR: (Into phone.) Sorry, the Brigadier is busy___.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Oh, I'll...I'll have to go now, sir. I've got the Minister coming through on the scrambler. Goodbye.

(Another phone on the BRIGADIER'S desk has started to beep. He puts the first phone down and picks up the second.)

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Lethbridge-Stewart?
VOICE: (Over telephone.) Ah good, I have the Minister of Defence for you.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Oh, right, put him through.

(The RADIO OPERATOR calls across the room...)

U.N.I.T. RADIO OPERATOR: Captain Yates, sir, on four.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: I can't speak to him now.
U.N.I.T. RADIO OPERATOR: He says something very odd is happening at Auderly House. If you could have a quick word with him, sir?
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: All right.

(Still holding the phone, he flicks a switch on a speaker on his desk.)

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into radio.) Yes, what is it, Yates?
CAPTAIN YATES: (OOV: Over radio.) A couple of my men missing, sir, and the Doctor and Miss Grant - not a sign of them.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into radio.) Look really, Yates, I've got a major international crisis on. I really haven't got time for any...
MINISTER: (OOV: Over telephone.) Oh, Lethbridge-Stewart?
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Erm, yes, yes, that's right?
MINISTER: (OOV: Over telephone.) Yes, it's the Minister here.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) One moment, sir. (Into radio.) Listen, Yates, search the grounds again or report back to me - out!

(He flicks the switch off.)

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Yes, Minister?

15: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. HALLWAY

CAPTAIN YATES: (To BENTON.) Well, you heard what he said - let's get down there.

(They walk out of the hallway. ANAT listens to them go.)

16: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. CELLAR

(She quietly closes the door.)

ANAT: Light.

(SHURA switches the light back on.)

BOAZ: So what do we do now?
ANAT: Tie them up.

(SHURA and BOAZ push their two captives further down the cellar steps and onto the floor.)

SHURA: Sit down there.

(ANAT steals quietly into the hallway...)

17: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. HALLWAY

(...where she checks that the coast is clear.)

18: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(She then enters the study and checks that this too is clear.)

19: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. HALLWAY

(Ever watchful she heads back for the cellar.)

20: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. CELLAR

(Here, the DOCTOR and JO sit on the floor, their hands tied behind their backs and a gag over their mouths. ANAT comes back in.)

ANAT: Right, they're clear of the house. Have you finished?
SHURA: Yes.
ANAT: We must go.

(The two men come back up the steps, casting a final eye back on their captives.)

ANAT: Quietly!

(They leave the cellar. Behind them, the DOCTOR starts to frantically move his mouth, edging the gag further down his chin. JO watches as he manages to free his mouth.)

DOCTOR: Oh, that's better.

(JO mumbles some words behind her gag.)

DOCTOR: You know, I've got a good mind to let you stay like that! So much more peaceful.

(JO mumbles indignantly and moves herself across to the DOCTOR'S side against a wine rack.)

DOCTOR: In any case, even if I released you, you'll probably ask me a lot of fool questions!

(JO manages to shake her own gag off.)

JO: I've only got one question - who are they?
DOCTOR: On the face of it, three rather desperate people.
JO: Well, they're criminals - they must be!
DOCTOR: Ah, you're prejudiced.
JO: Well, aren't you? They tried to kill you and me.
DOCTOR: That's not in their favour, I'll admit. You know, we shouldn't really judge 'em until we find out why they're here. Well, come on, Jo. What about trying out some of that escapology of yours?
JO: Well, I've been trying but...ropes are too tight.

(He edges round so that he and JO are almost back to back.)

DOCTOR: I'll tell you what...have a try...have a try at untying mine.
JO: Okay.
DOCTOR: Got it?

(JO nods and starts to try to untie his bonds.)

JO: Where'd they come from?
DOCTOR: Well, technologically speaking, that gun of theirs is about two hundred years ahead of its time - your time that is. (Ponders.) The twenty-second century visiting the twentieth...a planned expedition through time to meet and kill an important politician. Now, why?
JO: Well, I'm the one who's supposed to be asking...the questions.
DOCTOR: He's obviously not only important to us, he's also important to them. Or history - their history - must talk a lot about Sir Reginald Styles, I think.
JO: You mean, they travelled back in our team to try and change history?
DOCTOR: That's it, yes. How are you doing?
JO: Oh, not very well. These knots are...rock hard.
DOCTOR: Well, in that case, there's only one thing left for us to do.

(He leans back against the wine rack.)

JO: I know - wait.
DOCTOR: You're learning, Jo.

(She smiles and relaxes.)

JO: You know, I still don't get it - that changing history bit.
DOCTOR: Have you got a better theory?
JO: Well, no. It just doesn't fit them. They seem more like a bunch of thugs to me.
DOCTOR: Fanatics, Jo, not thugs. Changing history is a very fanatical idea, you know.

21: INT. CONTROL ROOM

(The DALEKS have come out of their chamber and are in the control room. They surround the CONTROLLER as he explains the lack of progress.)

CONTROLLER: We are maintaining constant watch, but there is no sign of any time transference module in operation.
CHIEF DALEK: All criminal elements must be tracked down and destroyed.
CONTROLLER: Well, I am doing everything possible, but...
CHIEF DALEK: (Interrupts.) They will have returned to the time zone where the first criminal was eliminated. You will dispatch security forces to search for them.
CONTROLLER: Of course...at once.

(He looks at a small device which rests on top of a thin stand. It looks like a sculpture of two silver globes.)

CONTROLLER: And the new equipment?
CHIEF DALEK: The Time Vortex Magnetron is set to the frequency of the module that was traced. Anyone using that module will be diverted in the space-time vortex and attracted here.
CONTROLLER: But only if that particular module is used?
CHIEF DALEK: It is necessary to know the frequency.
CONTROLLER: But surely no one will use the module? They must realise that we can trace them...
CHIEF DALEK: (Shouts.) Do not dispute with the Daleks! The function of the human is to obey! Activate the Magnetron!

(The DALEKS and the CONTROLLER face the device. It starts to hum and light patterns start to emanate from it.)

22: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(While BOAZ looks through the door into the hallway and SHURA keeps an eye on the window, ANAT speaks urgently into a small radio but that emits from it is a buzzing sound.)

ANAT: (Into radio.) Intercept to base. Intercept to base. Do you coordinate? Do you coordinate? Intercept...

(She gives up.)

ANAT: No good. There is a massive disturbance in the vortex.
BOAZ: We cannot fail again. This is our last chance.
ANAT: We must get fresh orders. The time coordinates are crucial.
BOAZ: (Snaps.) We cannot wait for new orders!
SHURA: Look, why don't I return to the tunnel? There's better chance of contact there.
ANAT: Right, Shura. Ask them...
BOAZ: (Interrupts.) Why ask them anything? Isn't it obvious what we must do? We wait here and kill Styles.
ANAT: And if we are detected?
BOAZ: We hold those two as hostages. We kill them if necessary.

(ANAT passes the radio to SHURA.)

ANAT: Get alternative orders.
SHURA: Right.

(He goes to the French window, checks that there is no one in view and leaves.)

BOAZ: (Quietly.) You are soft, Anat. What do two lives matter when so much is at stake?

23: EXT. AUDERLY HOUSE

(SERGEANT BENTON drives himself, YATES and a UNIT soldier, armed with a machine gun, in a jeep through the wooded grounds. They speed past some bushes where SHURA is concealed. He watches them go and then comes out of hiding, running at breakneck speed.)

24: EXT. TUNNEL AREA

(Still running, he reaches the railway bridge. He descends half-way down the embankment and reaches behind some tall grasses growing at the side of the bridge. From there, he pulls out a plastic bag and out of that he takes what appears to be a flat, round bomb-like device. He checks it, puts it back in the bag and re-conceals this. He then takes out his radio and speaks urgently into it...)

SHURA: ZV6 to Eagle. ZV6 to Eagle, do you connect, over?

(Suddenly, he is aware of a massive form by his side. He looks up and sees an OGRON. As he struggles to his feet, the creature clubs him viscously on the arm. SHURA staggers back and then slides himself down the remainder of the embankment to the canal bank. Both he and the OGRON reach for their respective blasters but SHURA is the quicker and he blasts the OGRON into nothingness. Clutching his injured arm, he runs back up the embankment and back to the house.)

25: INT. UNIT HQ. DUTY ROOM

(YATES and BENTON have returned to UNIT HQ and are reporting back to an impatient BRIGADIER.)

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: What do you mean, missing?
CAPTAIN YATES: Well, there's not a sign of them.
SERGEANT BENTON: We searched the house and the grounds, sir.
CAPTAIN YATES: The Doctor, Jo and a couple of my men - vanished.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (His voice rising.) Now listen, Yates, I've been talking to the Minister. Styles seems to have pulled it off. The Chinese have agreed to attend and the conference is on again.
CAPTAIN YATES: Oh, when's it fixed for?
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Shouts.) Tomorrow night, so you see the spot this puts me in!

(He picks up a phone.)

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Get me Auderly House!

26: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(ANAT is growing nervous as SHURA fails to return...)

ANAT: Where is he?
BOAZ: I told you, Anat.

(A phone suddenly starts to ring. ANAT goes over to it.)

BOAZ: Leave it!
ANAT: No - suspicious. Next time the soldiers may find us.

(She gestures to the hallway.)

ANAT: Get them up.

(BOAZ leaves as the phone continues ringing.)

27: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. CELLAR

(The DOCTOR and JO are still tied up. The sound of the phone ringing reaches them in the cellar but they don't seem to notice.)

DOCTOR: Jo, every choice we make changes the history of the world.
JO: I just don't understand. I mean, why don't they go back to September 12th if that's where they want to be - you know, have another go.
DOCTOR: Well, that's the Blinovitch limitation effect.
JO: The what?

(Before the DOCTOR can answer, BOAZ calls out from the stairs...)

BOAZ: On your feet, both of you!

(They look up and see him pointing his blaster at them.)

28: INT. UNIT HQ. DUTY ROOM

(The BRIGADIER still listens to the ring tone.)

CAPTAIN YATES: Honestly, sir. You're wasting your time - he's not there.

(The BRIGADIER is about to put the phone down when he hears that it has been picked up and...)

DOCTOR: (OOV: Over phone.) Hello? Hello?
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Doctor?
DOCTOR: (OOV: Over phone.) Yes?

(The BRIGADIER glances at YATES and BENTON.)

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Lethbridge-Stewart.
DOCTOR: (OOV: Over phone.) Ah.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Is everything all right there?

29: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

DOCTOR: (Into phone.) Yes fine, Brigadier. Yes, things couldn't be better.

(But his hands are still tied and ANAT holds the phone to his ear with one hand and her blaster pointed at him with the other. BOAZ stands behind the DOCTOR.)

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (OOV: Over phone.) Yates and Benton came to look for you. Said the place was deserted.
DOCTOR: (Into phone.) Did they? Oh yes, we were probably down the cellar at the time. Old Styles keeps a remarkably good selection of wines, you know.

30: INT. UNIT HQ. DUTY ROOM

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) Now listen, Doctor, you're sure that everything is normal down at that house? Because Styles is coming back there tomorrow night.

31: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

DOCTOR: (Into phone.) Look, I...I don't that's very wise, Brigadier...

(ANAT raises her blaster.)

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (OOV: Over phone.) Well, why not if everything's all right?

32: INT. UNIT HQ. DUTY ROOM

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (Into phone.) It is all right, isn't it, Doctor? Captain Yates was very concerned about you.

33: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

DOCTOR: (Into phone.) Well, you tell Captain Yates not to worry, everything's fine. And tell old Styles too, and the Prime Minister.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (OOV: Over phone.) Right.
DOCTOR: (Into phone.) Oh, and Brigadier?
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: (OOV: Over phone.) Yes?
DOCTOR: (Into phone.) Don't forget to tell it to the marines. Goodbye.

34: INT. UNIT HQ. DUTY ROOM

(The BRIGADIER puts the phone down.)

CAPTAIN YATES: There you are, sir. I said there was something wrong.

(The BRIGADIER gets up and heads for the door.)

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: I'm going down to that house myself. Lay on a jeep for me, will you? I'll meet you there later.

(He leaves the room and YATES turns to the phone to carry out the order.)

35: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(ANAT is exultant. Both she and BOAZ fail to spot that JO, sat on the other side of the room, is frantically working on her bonds behind her back.)

ANAT: He's coming! Sir Reginald Styles is coming here.
DOCTOR: Well that surprises you? Well, I should have thought with your insight into the future...oh no, in your case, it'd be the past, wouldn't it?
BOAZ: The conference tomorrow night - our dates were right after all.
ANAT: All we have to do is to wait here until he returns and then...

(JO is free of her ropes. She jumps up and grabs the time machine.)

JO: Right! Drop your guns! If you don't, I'll smash this to pieces.

(ANAT and BOAZ turns their guns on her.)

DOCTOR: Jo, put that thing down. I've only just got it in working order.
JO: I mean it.
ANAT: Stupid child! You do not know what you are doing!
JO: Oh yes I do - you're going to let us both out - or you'll be stranded here for ever.
BOAZ: We don't need that machine. We have another one.
ANAT: The man who owned that machine is dead. His body is back in our time zone.
JO: You're...bluffing.
ANAT: Put it down and don't be silly!
DOCTOR: Jo, do as she says.

(Suddenly the machine starts to hum. BOAZ looks frightened.)

BOAZ: Drop it...drop it!

(Light patterns emanate from the machine...)

36: VORTEX

(...and JO finds herself spinning round in vortex, travelling further and further into the distance.)

37: INT. CONTROL ROOM

(She materialises in the control room. Two OGRONS stand over the CONTROLLER'S chair and the man himself is sat in it. He swings round and looks at a nervous and confused JO as she tries to take in her surroundings.)

38: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(The DOCTOR shouts into empty space.)

DOCTOR: Jo! Jo!

(He looks at the two guerillas who themselves seem sober in their attitude to what they have just seen.)

DOCTOR: Look, can't you do anything?
ANAT: No, it's too late.
DOCTOR: Well, what...what's happened to her?
ANAT: Disintegrated, dispersed around the time vortex.
BOAZ: If she was lucky.
DOCTOR: And if she wasn't?
BOAZ: Re-embodied in the twenty-second century.
ANAT: Believe me, she would be better off dead.

39: INT. CONTROL ROOM

(JO, looking nervous and scared, is still stood before the CONTROLLER who gestures to the two OGRONS.)

CONTROLLER: You may go.

(They walk out of the control room and the CONTROLLER closes the door using a hand device. From his seat, he smiles charmingly at JO.)

CONTROLLER: You see, they're really not as terrifying as they look.
JO: What are they?
CONTROLLER: Ogrons. They're a form of higher anthropoid. They used to live in scattered communities on one of the outer planets. They make very useful servants.
JO: Servants? Well, what do they do?
CONTROLLER: Oh, we use them as...policemen.

(He stands.)

CONTROLLER: They're very simple, very honest, very loyal.

(He gestures at his own chair.)

CONTROLLER: Do please sit down.
JO: Thank you.

(She takes a seat and looks round the control room.)

JO: Is this really the...twenty-second century?
CONTROLLER: Oh, don't worry. We can return you to your own time, but, er, tell me Miss, erm?
JO: Grant, Jo Grant.
CONTROLLER: Miss Grant...these three people who attacked you - what did you make of them?
JO: Well, they were sort of...guerillas, I suppose.
CONTROLLER: They are cruel and ruthless fanatics.
JO: You know who they are?
CONTROLLER: Unfortunately, yes. But what you don't know, is how lucky you are that they didn't get rid of you straight away.
JO: They tried to kill the Doctor.
CONTROLLER: He's still with them , is he - this friend of yours?
JO: Yes, they're holding him prisoner.
CONTROLLER: Then I am afraid he is in very grave danger.
JO: But they've no reason to harm him! They know he's the wrong man!
CONTROLLER: (Passionately.) You don't know these people! We have spent years trying to track them down. If you knew some of the terrifying crimes they have been capable of! If anyone stands in their way, they are without mercy.
JO: (Quietly.) I can believe it.
CONTROLLER: However, there is a chance that I may be able to save your friend.

(JO jumps up.)

JO: Could you?!
CONTROLLER: I can try. There are means but I shall need your help.
JO: Well, how can I help?
CONTROLLER: Well, first of all, I shall want to know exactly where you came from...and when.
JO: Well, we were at Sir Reginald Styles' house, about...fifty miles from London.
CONTROLLER: Now, you've told me the year, can you tell me the exact date?
JO: That's easy - it was September the 13th.
CONTROLLER: Excellent.

(The door to the control room buzzes open and one of the grey suited female assistants walks in.)

CONTROLLER: Now, you must be tired, you must be hungry. We do have special guest rooms.

(He gestures for JO to follow the assistant.)

CONTROLLER: Leave everything to me. Oh, there is one last question...these criminals - can you tell me exactly where they entered your time? I mean, did they manifest themselves in the house itself?
JO: I don't think so.
CONTROLLER: Somewhere outside the house - some hiding place?
JO: I don't know for sure, but there's a tunnel by a canal, not far from the house. We found that...time machine there.

(The CONTROLLER looks pleased.)

CONTROLLER: A tunnel? Thank you. I'll call you as soon as we have any news.

(JO walks out with the assistant and the CONTROLLER closes the door with his hand device. He then turns and faces the scanner.)

CONTROLLER: You see? She trusts me implicitly.

40: INT. DALEKS CHAMBER

(His image appears on the monitor in the DALEK'S chamber.)

CHIEF DALEK: The criminals are using the tunnel as a transfer point. We will prepare an ambush in the twentieth-century time zone.
CONTROLLER: (On monitor.) We have security forces in the area. With any luck, they will drive the guerillas straight into our hands. I shall take charge of the operation myself.
CHIEF DALEK: (Angrily.) I shall lead the expedition! This time there must be no mistake. The enemies of the Daleks will be destroyed!

41: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. CELLAR

(The DOCTOR is back in the cellar. Ungagged, he is sat on the floor with his hands tied behind his back while BOAZ ties his feet. ANAT shouts an urgent whisper from the steps.)

ANAT: Hurry! Shura may be back!

(BOAZ finishes and leaves the cellar. As soon as he is alone, the DOCTOR starts to cut his bonds against a sharp point behind him. After a moment's frantic effort, he hands are free and he starts to untie his feet.)

42: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(ANAT and BOAZ enter the study.)

ANAT: Where is he? He should be back!

43: EXT. AUDERLY HOUSE

(Outside the house, OGRONS start to crash through the shrubbery and approach the house.)

44: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(BOAZ spots them approaching.)

BOAZ: Anat! Look!

(She joins him at the window.)

45: EXT. AUDERLY HOUSE

(The OGRONS make their way across the lawn.)

ANAT: Shoot!

46: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(The guerillas raise their guns and fire through one of the open French windows.)

47: EXT. AUDERLY HOUSE

(The OGRONS fire back...)

48: INT. AUDERLY HOUSE. STUDY

(...and another of the windows explodes in a flash and a shower of glass.)

ANAT: Pull back!

(BOAZ runs to the door.)

BOAZ: We can get through the library. Come!

(Before he can move, the door flies open behind him and knocks him to the floor. The DOCTOR enters and ANAT turns her blaster on him.)

ANAT: Stay where you are! Boaz, get out!
BOAZ: ___!
ANAT: Boaz, come on!

(BOAZ gets up and makes a run for the DOCTOR but he is easily thrown back. ANAT, still keeping a gun trained on the DOCTOR, helps BOAZ to his feet.)

ANAT: Come on, Boaz, out! Out, out!

(They scramble out of a side door, watched by the DOCTOR who, after they have gone, quickly starts to don his cloak. As he does so, another of the French windows is smashed through and an OGRON lumbers into the room from outside.)

DOCTOR: How do you do?

(The DOCTOR karate kicks the OGRON'S gun hand. The creature falls to its knees and the DOCTOR grabs its blaster and runs out of the study. The OGRON growls and sets off after him.)

49: EXT. AUDERLY HOUSE

(ANAT and BOAZ run along the terrace of the house. They reach a corner behind which ANAT shelters whilst BOAZ ducks below the level of the terrace. They see two more OGRONS coming along the terrace from the other direction. ANAT fires a shot which misses. She jumps down and joins BOAZ and the two set off, ANAT firing a couple more shots as they go. A moment later, the DOCTOR comes running along the terrace. He sees the OGRONS and fires causing one of the creatures to vanish in a flare. Suddenly there is the sound of a vehicle screeching to a halt on the gravel followed by the rattle of a machine gun and the second OGRON falls dead. The DOCTOR turns and sees that the BRIGADIER has arrived in a UNIT jeep and was himself manning the gun in the back. The soldier climbs down.)

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: Doctor, what on earth's going on?
DOCTOR: Thank you, Brigadier, for that timely intervention.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: Who is that creature.
DOCTOR: Yes, well, I'll explain about him later. Excuse me, old chap, I'm in a hurry.

(He climbs in the seat vacated by the driver and sets off at speed. The BRIGADIER calls after him...)

BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART: Doctor, come back at once!

(He gives a rueful shake of the head.)

50: EXT. TUNNEL AREA

(ANAT and BOAZ have reached the railway bridge. They run down the embankment and enter the tunnel. A moment later, the jeep crashes through the undergrowth and arrives at the bridge. The DOCTOR gets out and runs through a gap in a chainlink fence, down the canal side and into the tunnel.)

51: INT. TUNNEL

(He pauses within the brick-lined passageway. As he looks round, he hears the sound of materialisation from one of the time travel machines. A DALEK fades into view in a side tunnel and he looks once more upon the form of his greatest enemies...)
