OF THE
AUTONSBY
ROBERT
HOLMESEPISODE TWO
1: INT. UNIT HEADQUARTERS. LABORATORY
(JO starts to prise the lid apart and smoke begins to pour out as the DOCTOR reaches the bottom of the stairs and sees what's happening.)
DOCTOR: Stop her! That's a bomb!
(YATES runs forward but the possessed JO punches him sharply in the stomach and the winded officer falls to the ground. JO turns back to the ammunition box.)
JO: I've got to open it! I've got to!
(Smoke continues to pour out as SERGEANT BENTON runs forward and grabs JO to one side...)
JO: Got to open it! Got to...got to open it!
(...leaving the DOCTOR to grab the smoking box and throw it through the window...)
2: EXT. UNIT HEADQUARTERS
(...where it falls into the canal at the back of the building.)
3: INT. UNIT HEADQUARTERS. LABORATORY
(The DOCTOR and BENTON brace themselves as...)
4: EXT. UNIT HEADQUARTERS
(...the bomb explodes, sending gulls crying up into the sky.)
5: INT. UNIT HEADQUARTERS. LABORATORY
SERGEANT BENTON: Strewth! There's gonna be some complaints about that you know, Doctor.
DOCTOR: (Snaps.) My dear Sergeant, if that box hadn't been tied, we wouldn't be here to receive any complaints.
SERGEANT BENTON: Yes sir...(The DOCTOR looks sharply at him.)
SERGEANT BENTON: I mean no sir!
(YATES gets up off the floor, still holding his stomach.)
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: What gave you the idea it was a booby trap, Doctor?
DOCTOR: She did.(JO stands almost to attention in the middle of the lab - her face an immobile mask and her eyes wide open.)
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: What's wrong with her?
DOCTOR: Almost certainly post-hypnotic alienation.
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: She's been hypnotised?
DOCTOR: Well of course, why else do you think she tried to blow us all to pieces?(He steps forward towards the young girl.)
DOCTOR: Come on, my dear, come and sit down over here. Get a chair, Captain Yates.
(The DOCTOR leads her to an ornate chair the CAPTAIN YATES fetches from one side of the room.)
DOCTOR: Come on, come and sit down here.
(JO, still in a trance, sits in the chair.)
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: Well, I understood that under hypnosis it was impossible for...
DOCTOR: (Interrupts.) You thought that under hypnosis...it was impossible for a subject to be...persuaded to do anything that was against his nature?
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: That's right.
DOCTOR: Well, it's a fallacy, Captain. The Master can completely control the human mind.
SERGEANT BENTON: So he can just take over anyone he likes?
DOCTOR: No not quite. No, some minds are stubborn enough to resist hypnosis. In any case, it doesn't last. Away from the Master's influence, the mind struggles constantly to free itself.(YATES kneels next to JO.)
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: Is she in some sort of a...trance?
DOCTOR: I think the current jargon is schizoid dissociation. It's because she was forced to do something against her will and her conscious mind refuses to accept the fact. The result is a deep trauma.
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: Jo? Where's the Master?
DOCTOR: She won't remember that.
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: But she might. (With emphasis.) Jo! Where is the Master?(JO continues to stare straight ahead.)
7: INT. PLASTICS FACTORY. MAIN OFFICE
(The MASTER has joined REX FARRELL in his office where an angry McDERMOTT questions him.)
McDERMOTT: Mr. Farrel tells me you changed the mix. What right have you got to interfere? Do you know you've ruined a whole day's production?
(The MASTER steps forward to REX'S desk and picks up a shapeless black blob of plastic.)
MASTER: You call this ruined?
McDERMOTT: Well it's the wrong colour and the wrong texture. Of course it's ruined!
MASTER: You don't appreciate its full potential, do you?
McDERMOTT: Look and I don't want to. It doesn't meet our specification.
MASTER: This plastic has got unique properties Mr McDermott. Allow me to demonstrate.(The MASTER throws the plastic onto the floor and snaps his fingers. Under REX'S passive gaze and to looks of puzzlement from McDERMOTT, the plastic slowly forms into to shape of a black armchair. McDERMOTT turns nervously to the MASTER. )
McDERMOTT: It's, er, unique right enough! So, er, you're...you're a magician as well as a Colonel, eh?
MASTER: (Quietly.) I am many things.
McDERMOTT: Aye well, that's as maybe, but...but... (He regains his nerve.) ...but you're not a director of this company, Colonel Masters. I am in charge of production here and I answer only to Mr. Farrel and his father.(The MASTER steps behind the chair swings it round towards McDERMOTT.)
MASTER: Look, why don't you try it?
McDERMOTT: Well, you'll never sell that. I'll tell you that for nothing! Sure, it looks like...like a...black pudding!
MASTER: Try sitting in it.(McDERMOTT reluctantly steps forward. He puts his hand on the arm of the chair but recoils.)
McDERMOTT: It's got a cold clammy feel to it - now plastic should be warm and dry with a....
MASTER: (Interrupts sharply.) Sit down!(McDERMOTT puts his hand to his head as the hypnotic force of the MASTER overcomes him. He sits down in the chair. As he adjusts his position, a look of fear appears on his face.)
McDERMOTT: It's moving!
(REX watches in horror as the chair starts to move and surge. He steps forward to help McDERMOTT but the MASTER holds up his arm and bars his way.)
MASTER: No, I will not tolerate dissidence.
(McDERMOTT starts to cry out as he sinks within the chair. As he falls deeper into the plunging seat, the back of the chair falls forward and covers his face, choking off his cries. McDERMOTT'S upraised arm falls as he suffocates. REX steps over to his office intercom and presses a button.)
REX FARREL: Sylvia, will you check Mr. McDermott's entitlement on termination of employment, please?
MASTER: Oh, it's a very clumsy operation this. You can see now why this product's got to be changed.
REX FARREL: Oh, I don't know. Seems very effective to me.
MASTER: What? Yards of plastic to accomplish that which can be done by just a few inches?
REX FARREL: A few inches?
MASTER: Yes, Farrel. The human body has a basic weakness - one that I which I shall exploit...to assist in the destruction of humanity.
8: INT. UNIT HEADQUARTERS. LABORATORY
(JO still sits in her trance. The DOCTOR kneels by her side.)
DOCTOR: Jo, wake up.
(There is no response.)
DOCTOR: Wake up Jo. This is the Doctor. You're amongst friends.
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: Oh, it's no good. I think we're just wasting...
DOCTOR: (Sharply.) Captain please! Be quiet!(A frown appears on JO'S face.)
JO: Doctor?
DOCTOR: Yes?
JO: Doctor?(The frown turns into a look of fear and then panic...)
JO: Doctor!
DOCTOR: All right, all right,
JO: Doc...!
DOCTOR: Calm down Jo. Calm down, we're quite safe.
JO: (Still panicking.) No, there was an explosion!
DOCTOR: That was a long way away. Believe me, that was a long way away! Now we're all quite safe. Look around you, see for yourself, look around, look. Look, we're all here.(JO looks round in confusion at the two soldiers, then her gaze falls on the lab bench where the box had stood.)
JO: The box! I had to open it! There was a voice!
DOCTOR: Yes well, that voice - where were you when you heard that voice?
JO: A room...
DOCTOR: Mmm mm.
JO: I...I don't know where.
DOCTOR: Yes, what sort of a room?
JO: There was a desk...
DOCTOR: Yes.
JO: A...a telephone...
DOCTOR: An office? Was it a factory office?
JO: Yes! Yes, an office!
DOCTOR: Yes, well, where was that factory? Do you know the name of the factory?
JO: No.
DOCTOR: Well, try and remember.
JO: I can't remember. I...I can't remember!(JO raises her hands to her head in hysteria.)
9: INT. PLASTICS FACTORY. OFFICE
(FARREL and the MASTER have received a visitor - REX'S father. FARREL SENIOR is a gruff, thin, white haired man. He is shocked to hear of McDERMOTT'S death.)
FARREL SENIOR: Dead! He can't be.
REX FARREL: I'm afraid so, father.(The MASTER walks over to the plastic chair - now empty of its victim.)
MASTER: Yes...he sat down in this chair here, and...just slipped away.
FARREL SENIOR: I...can't take it in.
REX FARREL: Yes, it's very sad.
FARREL SENIOR: Well, what did the doctor say?
REX FARREL: I...(REX stops. Within his hypnotised state he cannot think of the answer to the question.)
REX FARREL: I'm not sure...it all happened so suddenly. You see...
(REX turns to the MASTER but FARREL SENIOR waves his question to one side as he walks behind the desk and sits in REX'S office chair.)
FARREL SENIOR: Oh, well anyway, I suppose it's hardly decent in the circumstances but...I've driven a long way to talk to you, Rex.
REX FARREL: Er, yes father? What about?
FARREL SENIOR: About the way you seem determined to throw away the years of work I've put into this factory. Now just what is going on here?
REX FARREL: We're changing our policy, father, introducing new methods, new products...
FARREL SENIOR: You're doing nothing of the sort! You'll carry on on the lines I laid down - or I'll come out of retirement and do the job myself. I'm not past it, you know.(The MASTER steps forward from where he has been standing at the window.)
MASTER: Allow me to explain, Mr. Farrel.
FARREL SENIOR: I'd be very much obliged if you would.
MASTER: The changes that I have suggested are for the good of the factory. Now you must trust me, there's nothing to worry about...(He fixes FARREL SENIOR with his hypnotic stare...)
MASTER: Nothing to worry about...
(FARREL SENIOR stares into the MASTER'S eyes.)
FARREL SENIOR: To...trust you...nothing to worry about...
(The old man recovers himself, passes his hand over his eyes and barks out...)
FARREL SENIOR: There's a great deal to worry about, sir! And frankly, the thing that worries me most is your presence here!
MASTER: Why!?(The MASTER raises a hand to strike FARREL SENIOR but his son runs forward and restrains him.)
REX FARREL: No!
(The MASTER recovers his temper and laughs gently.)
MASTER: Congratulations, Mr. Farrel. Usually I can overcome opposition but your will is exceptionally strong - one might say "dangerously" strong.
(The MASTER smiles and walks out of the office, watched by a worried REX.)
FARREL SENIOR: Damned impertinence! Rex...
(He sees that his son has his eyes closed, almost in pain. FARREL SENIOR walks over and puts his hand on his shoulder.)
FARREL SENIOR: Rex, hadn't you better go home? I'll see after things here.
REX FARREL: No...please...I can manage.
FARREL SENIOR: All right. I'll give you till tomorrow.(The old man walks towards the door.)
FARREL SENIOR: And by then I want this Masters fellow out of here and production back to normal.
(He walks out of the door as his son's face twists in pain.)
10: EXT. PLASTICS FACTORY. FRONT ENTRANCE
(At the front of the building, the MASTER checks round and then walks up to FARREL SENIOR'S car. He opens the front passenger door and switches the vehicles heating system onto full. He closes the door and steps out of sight as FARREL SENIOR walks out of the building.)
MASTER: Oh, Mr. Farrel?
(FARREL turns round as the MASTER walks forward, his hands behind his back.)
FARREL SENIOR: I've nothing to say to you, Sir.
MASTER: Well, I thought if you actually saw one of our new lines.(The MASTER produces a doll from behind his back. A foot high and orange in colour, it is almost featureless except for three buttons down its chest, a short dark beard and an evil face, complete with sharp pointed teeth.)
FARREL SENIOR: Disgusting object. No demand for a thing like that.
MASTER: I think you're wrong, Mr. Farrel.
FARREL SENIOR: Well, since you won't be making any more of them, we shan't have a chance to find out.(He walks round to the drivers side. The MASTER opens the passenger door.)
MASTER: Why don't you keep this for a while? Think it over?
FARREL SENIOR: I don't want the thing!
MASTER: Ah, but I insist!(He throws the doll onto the back seat of the car.)
FARREL SENIOR: (Starting the car.) You're wasting your time.
MASTER: Not at all - I'm simply trying out a new product.(The car drives off...watched by the MASTER with a knowing look on his face.)
11: INT. UNIT HEADQUARTERS. LABORATORY
(The door to the lab opens and JO cautiously walks in. The DOCTOR is back at his bench, complete with eyeglass, again working on the circuit that was damaged by the fire extinguisher.)
DOCTOR: Hello Jo. Are you feeling better?
JO: Yes, I'm fine, thank you.
DOCTOR: That's good.
JO: I just wanted to say how sorry I am.
DOCTOR: What on earth for?
JO: The bomb! I might have killed you all!
DOCTOR: Ah, that was nothing to do with you, my dear, that was the Master.(He smiles at her and resumes his work as the BRIGADIER walks into the lab.)
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: You're supposed to be on sick leave, Miss Grant.
JO: I'm okay now again, Sir.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: Oh, so you've recovered your memory then?
JO: No, I'm afraid I haven't. I've tried and tried to remember.
DOCTOR: (Still working.) Yes, well don't. It'll only make things worse. Leave your mind alone. Something may pop up of its own accord.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: Yes, well, we can't just sit about waiting for something to pop up from Miss Grant's mind. If my agents don't turn up something soon, I'm going to surround and search every factory on that list.(The DOCTOR suspends his work momentarily to retort...)
DOCTOR: You know Brigadier, your methods have all the refined subtlety of a bull in a china shop!
(CAPTAIN YATES walks in.)
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: Any news?
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: Well, it's a bit tenuous Sir.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: Well, out with it.
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: You know the field where we found Professor Philips car?
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: Yeah...
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: Well Sergeant Benton noticed that the turf was all churned up. So he did a bit of checking...and he found that a circus had just left.
DOCTOR: Uh? Where's the circus now?
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: Tarminster.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: I'll get some of my men down there with photographs of Philips. Someone at the circus may have seen him.
DOCTOR: I haven't been to a circus for years. I think I'll go myself.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: All right Doctor, I'll get you an escort.
DOCTOR: No thank you, Brigadier. I'll go on my own if you don't mind. Don't want a lot of soldiers crashing about, do we?
JO: Can I come?
DOCTOR: Er, no Miss Grant, I don't think so. Not just yet.
JO: But I'm fine now.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: (Warningly.) Miss Grant...(The DOCTOR walks towards the lab door.)
DOCTOR: I'll need some photographs of that man Philips.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: Oh, they're in my office, but I still don't see why you don't want men...(The BRIGADIER follows the DOCTOR out, his voice tailing off. CAPTAIN YATES notices a despondent looking JO.)
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: What's up now?
JO: Oh nothing! Life's just wonderful!
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: Easy love.
JO: I've really got off to a terrific start, haven't I? I find the man everybody's looking for, I forget where he is and I end up by trying to blow you all sky high!
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: No-one's blaming you...
JO: Oh no! You all just tell me to keep out of the way! I'm not a child you know!
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: Well, you're acting like one.(JO is about to react but realises that MIKE YATES is right.)
JO: Sorry...but if only I could show them.
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: Don't try. Just do as the Brigadier says.(JO turns to him.)
JO: Yes of course, you're quite right.
(She smiles...)
12: INT. FARREL'S CAR
(The troll doll lies on the back seat of FARREL SENIOR'S car as he continues its journey. In the front seat, the old man takes a handkerchief out of his pocket and wipes his forehead and face. Unseen, in the rear of the car, the doll struggles up into a sitting position and stares at the back of the drivers head. FARREL notices the settings of the car's heating switches and adjusts them. He also opens the side window of the car, thereby causing a blast of cold air to enter the vehicle. The doll slumps back into a comatose position...)
13: INT. PLASTICS FACTORY. OFFICE
(The MASTER sits at the desk, going through paperwork. REX FARREL enters the office.)
REX FARREL: I've sent the staff home as you ordered, Colonel.
MASTER: Excellent. Begin maximum output of our new product.
REX FARREL: Without workers?
MASTER: The Nestene Autons will run the factory.
REX FARREL: Oh! Erm, I'm still afraid my father will make trouble. He, er, doesn't understand.
MASTER: Don't worry about your father. I've persuaded him to change his mind.(REX smiles, then...)
REX FARREL: Er, why did you send Philips to the circus? The UNIT people may find him.
MASTER: But I sent him there to be found by UNIT- or better still - by the Doctor.
REX FARREL: I'm sorry, I don't understand.
MASTER: You see, the bomb was by way of being a greetings card, a small little "gallantry" on the eve of battle. The car will lure the Doctor to the circus, and there, I shall destroy him.(REX smiles as the MASTER laughs.)
14: INT. CIRCUS. BIG TOP
(In the ring, five Elephants conclude their act under the whip of their trainer.)
15: EXT. CIRCUS
(The DOCTOR drives up in Bessie and parks her in the area where the circus folk have parked their caravans. He gets out of the car and watches in delight as the Elephants are led out of the big top. The DOCTOR walks towards them and stops their trainer. Behind him, JO rises up in concealment from underneath a blanket in the back seat of Bessie. Meanwhile, the DOCTOR is showing the Elephant trainer a photograph of PROFESSOR PHILIPS.)
DOCTOR: Philips, Professor Philips.
ELEPHANT TRAINER: Sorry pal, never seen him.(The little man leads his beasts one of his beasts off. Some distance away, a huge black STRONG MAN, dressed in the obligatory leopard skin leotard, watches the DOCTOR'S progress as he continues to question the circus workers. After he moment, he steps away. JO watches these actions from the back of Bessie...)
16: INT. FARREL SENIOR'S HOUSE. LIVING ROOM
(FARREL SENIOR has arrived home. His wife has also arrived home from a separate trip and, still dressed in her hat and coat, is hearings the news of McDERMOTT'S death.)
MRS. FARREL: Oh poor Mr. McDermott. It must have been a terrible shock for Rex.
FARREL SENIOR: On the contrary, when I walked in, he was just carrying on with his work as if nothing had happened.
MRS. FARREL: Oh John, no!
FARREL SENIOR: And this Colonel Masters was just as unconcerned. Frankly, they both seemed to me quite inhuman.
MRS. FARREL: You will make Rex get rid of that man.
FARREL SENIOR: I most certainly shall. Frankly, I didn't take to the chap really - or to his repulsive toy. Now just look at that!(He picks up the troll doll and shows it to his wife.)
MRS. FARREL: Oh, it's a horrible looking thing! There's something...evil about it.
17: EXT. CIRCUS
(The DOCTOR continues to walk through the circus grounds. Looking round, some sixth sense leads him to notice the MASTER'S horsebox-disguised TARDIS. He walks towards it.)
18: EXT. ANOTHER PART OF THE CIRCUS
(Elsewhere, the STRONG MAN leads ROSSINI out of another caravan.)
19: EXT. CIRCUS
(Meanwhile, the DOCTOR has placed a small electronic box against the horsebox and is listening through an earplug. He reaches for the door handle and is about to open the door when the STRONG MAN reaches out and grabs him.)
ROSSINI: Into me wagon quick!
(The DOCTOR is pulled away. JO watches from around the corner of another caravan.)
20: INT. CIRCUS. ROSSINI'S CARAVAN
(Inside ROSSINI'S own caravan, the DOCTOR is tied into a chair by the STRONG MAN, watched by a cigar smoking ROSSINI.)
DOCTOR: This is outrageous! Let me go at once!
ROSSINI: You've got some hopes. All right Tony, he's no elephant.(The STRONG MAN stops tying him.)
ROSSINI: What's your name?
DOCTOR: Smith.
ROSSINI: Smith! You've got no imagination. Try again, Mr. Smith.
DOCTOR: Doctor actually.
ROSSINI: Horse doctor maybe.(ROSSINI gives a short laugh.)
DOCTOR: You're an insulting ruffian, aren't you?
(ROSSINI blows smoke into the DOCTOR'S face.)
ROSSINI: Why were you so interested in my friend's horsebox?
DOCTOR: What's your friend's name?
ROSSINI: His name's none of your business.
DOCTOR: Hmm, it's strange name! How long's the horse box been here ?
ROSSINI: Sharrup! I'm asking the questions! Tony...(The STRONG MAN reaches behind the DOCTOR and starts twisting his arm. The DOCTOR'S face creases in pain.)
ROSSINI: He'll snap your arm like a twig Mister. Tony don't talk much but he's strong.
DOCTOR: All right my dear chap, there's no need to do that. I'm perfectly prepared to answer all your questions.(The STRONG MAN lets go of him.)
DOCTOR: And, er, what was the question?
ROSSINI: Me friend's horsebox - why were you so interested?
DOCTOR: I was listening.
ROSSINI: What for?
DOCTOR: Certain vibrations.
ROSSINI: Mmm, I don't think my friends gonna like you.(ROSSINI steps away and pours himself a glass of spirits.)
DOCTOR: I'm sure of it. Where is he?
ROSSINI: Away.
DOCTOR: How much are they paying you?
ROSSINI: (Laughs.) Come, come Doctor, gentlemen don't discuss money.
DOCTOR: Nonsense, gentlemen never talk about anything else. Now listen to me - if you're prepared to forget that you've ever seen me and let me go, I will reward you very handsomely.
ROSSINI: Is that so? Let's have a look, Tony.(The STRONG MAN reaches into the DOCTOR'S pocket and pulls out a wallet. He passes it to ROSSINI who opens it - revealing that it is empty of cash.)
ROSSINI: Oh, pity.
DOCTOR: I can get money quite easily.
ROSSINI: Eccentric millionaire, eh?(He opens another pocket of the wallet and pulls out a photograph of PROFESSOR PHILIPS.)
ROSSINI: 'Ello?
DOCTOR: Do you recognise that man?
ROSSINI: Maybe.
DOCTOR: That is a photo of a missing government scientist. If you've had anything to do with concealing him, you are in very serious trouble.(ROSSINI has put the photograph back into the wallet and throws it onto a table.)
ROSSINI: Someone's in trouble all right, Doctor, but it isn't me.
21: EXT. PHONE BOX
(JO is making a phone call...)
JO: They're holding him prisoner in one of the caravans.
22: INT. UNIT HEADQUARTERS. BRIGADIER'S OFFICE
(...to the BRIGADIER.)
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: Just what do you think you're doing down there, Miss Grant?
23: EXT. PHONE BOX
JO: Sorry sir, no time to argue. I'll go and see if I can help the Doctor.
24: INT. UNIT HEADQUARTERS. BRIGADIER'S OFFICE
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: You'll do nothing of the sort. You'll stay in the background till I arrive - is that clear?
25: EXT. CIRCUS
(JO, ignoring the BRIGADIERS instructions, carefully makes her way round the circus again. She sees a suited man walk up to the MASTER'S horsebox. She pulls a photograph out of her trouser pocket and compares it.)
JO: It's Professor Philips!
(PROFESSOR PHILIPS, now inside, pulls the door of the box shut.)
26: INT. FARREL SENIOR'S HOUSE. LIVING ROOM
(FARREL SENIOR and his wife re-enter their living room.)
FARREL SENIOR: It must have been a heart attack I suppose.
MRS. FARREL: Well, try not to worry about it dear.(She spots the troll doll lying on the floor near the radiator.)
MRS. FARREL: What's this thing doing over here?
(She picks it up and puts it on a shelf above the radiator as her husband sits down and starts reading the "Financial Times".)
FARREL SENIOR: The boy's attitude I can't understand.
MRS. FARREL: No, certainly doesn't sound like my Rex. Oh well, I'll go and make the coffee.(She walks out of the room. The troll doll lies inert as FARREL SENIOR momentarily looks up from his paper.)
FARREL SENIOR: Ah, it's beyond me.
(Behind him, the doll struggles to its feet and looks towards the man. FARREL spots something out of the corner of his eye as the doll, now on the floor runs towards him. FARREL jumps up in shock...)
27: INT. FARREL SENIOR'S HOUSE. KITCHEN
(MRS. FARREL hears noises coming from the living room.)
28: INT. FARREL SENIOR'S HOUSE. LIVING ROOM
(The doll has grasped FARREL SENIOR round the neck and he falls to the floor. His legs kick out as he struggles for breath...then he lies still. His wife's voice comes from the other room.)
MRS. FARREL: (OOV) John, are you all right?
(The doll runs away from its victim. MRS. FARREL enters the room...)
MRS. FARREL: John?
(She screams at the sight in front of her.)
29: EXT. COUNTRY ROAD
(The BRIGADIER'S car turns a corner. He looks momentarily out of the window from his front passenger seat and the car then continues its journey.)
30: INT. CIRCUS. ROSSINI'S CARAVAN
(ROSSINI stands shouting over the DOCTOR...)
ROSSINI: You don't give very good answers, my friend!
DOCTOR: Maybe you're not asking the right questions.(The STRONG MAN resumes his attack on the DOCTOR'S pinioned arms.)
ROSSINI: No Tony, don't break his arms - yet. I think I'll tell my friend you've arrived. He'll know what to do with you.
(In a mirror, the DOCTOR spots JO looking through a window behind him. He gently shakes his head and she ducks out of sight.)
ROSSINI: You know, Doctor, the cost of meat is exorbitant. Maybe my friend'll let me feed you to the tigers.
DOCTOR: You've got a very distorted sense of humour, haven't you?
ROSSINI: All right, Tony, watch him.(ROSSINI puts on his bowler hat and leaves the caravan. As soon as he has gone, the STRONG MAN walks over to the drinks cabinet and starts to drink straight out of one of the bottles of spirits.)
DOCTOR: The strong silent man, eh?
(JO slowly pushes the door open.)
DOCTOR: You've got no right to keep me here, you know? I've got a good mind to call for help.
(He does so, but in a very subdued way so as not to attract attention...)
DOCTOR: Help! help! help! he....
(It is enough for the STRONG MAN who picks up a rag and starts to push it into the DOCTOR'S mouth. JO rushes in behind him and breaks a vase over his head. The STRONG MAN falls to the ground.)
JO: Doctor!
(She pulls the cloth of out his mouth.)
DOCTOR: (Angrily.) What the blazes are you doing here? I told you to stay at headquarters.
(She starts to untie his bonds.)
JO: It's just as well for you I didn't, isn't it?
(His ropes come free.)
JO: Doctor, I've seen Professor Philips.
DOCTOR: Oh, where?
JO: He went into a horsebox, over there.(She points out of the window.)
31: INT. PLASTICS FACTORY. OFFICE
(The MASTER sits at REX'S desk. PROFESSOR PHILIPS appears on a monitor screen on the desk. REX stands behind the MASTER.)
MASTER: This girl you say who's been following you - describe her?
PROFESSOR PHILIPS: (On monitor.) Small - blond - short hair.
MASTER: Sounds like the Doctor's little friend, I wonder? Switch on the scanners, Philips.(The picture changes from that of PHILIP'S to that of a view of the caravans. It pans round until it lands on ROSSINI'S caravan - showing the DOCTOR and JO looking out of the door.)
MASTER: Very well, Philips, you what you have to do.
PROFESSOR PHILIPS: (On monitor.) Yes...Master.
32: INT. CIRCUS. ROSSINI'S CARAVAN
(The DOCTOR and JO walk back into the caravan.)
JO: What on earth is he doing inside a horsebox?
DOCTOR: It isn't exactly a horsebox. It just happens to look like one.
JO: You mean there isn't a horse inside.
DOCTOR: No more than there's a policeman inside my police box.
JO: So what do we do now?
DOCTOR: Well...(At that moment, PHILIPS runs into the caravan, a rod-like metallic object in his left hand.)
DOCTOR: Wait! Philips, wait! (Whispers.) Don't move, Jo.
JO: What's he holding?
DOCTOR: Some sort of a grenade. Now Philips, you listen to me. You are about to commit murder.
PROFESSOR PHILIPS: I must! He said I must!
DOCTOR: (Quietly.) Now wait, you just listen - the Master is controlling your mind. You must resist him. You can resist him.(PHILIPS face starts to look pained as his holds his finger over the grenade button.)
DOCTOR: You are Professor George Philips of the Radio Telescope research centre. You must resist him!
(PHILIPS cries out and runs out of the caravan - the grenade still in his hand.)
DOCTOR: You must resist him! Down Jo!
(He pushes her to the ground. There is an explosion outside. The two jump up and run outside.)
33: EXT. CIRCUS
(PHILIPS lies on the ground, a pall of smoke drifts over his body. The DOCTOR runs up and turns him over. JO turns away in horror.)
JO: What happened?
(The DOCTOR unclenches PHILIPS bloodied hand and takes a key out of it.)
DOCTOR: He tried to get rid of it. Poor chap.
(He walks towards the horsebox and opens the rear door with the key.)
JO: What are you doing?
DOCTOR: Shan't be a moment.(He climbs inside. JO turns as she hears a noise behind her.)
ROSSINI: Come on! Spread out! They can't have gone far!
(ROSSINI and the circus folk start to run towards them.)
JO: Hurry Doctor!
(The DOCTOR jumps out, carrying a similar circuit to that he was repairing in the lab.)
DOCTOR: Well, that didn't take long, did it?
JO: Long enough, I'm afraid.(The DOCTOR sees what she is looking at. ROSSINI - carrying a baseball bat - and his thugs run up to them.)
DOCTOR: Now wait a minute, listen to me! Now listen to me all of you!
ROSSINI: Tried to rob my caravan! Killed one of our men with a bomb! Get 'em!(ROSSINI clubs the DOCTOR to the ground. JO screams as the thugs jump forward. A police car, its sirens blaring drives up to them and screeches to a halt. Two policeman jump out and try and pull the DOCTOR and JO away from the rabid crowd.)
JO: Let me go!
(They succeed and push the two into the back of the car as the BRIGADIER'S car pulls up, driven by a soldier with MIKE YATES in the back.)
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: Here wait!
CAPTAIN MIKE YATES: They're in the back, sir - the Doctor and Jo.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: Better go and bail them out.(They drive off after the police car to gestures and shouts from the circus folk.)
34: INT. POLICE CAR
(The DOCTOR is semi-concussed in the back of the car. A concerned JO shouts at him...)
JO: Are you all right, Doctor? Doctor!
(The DOCTOR comes to, then in a panic digs into his pocket. He pulls the circuit from the MASTER'S TARDIS out and looks over it.)
DOCTOR: Thank heavens, nothing damaged.
JO: Speak for yourself, I'm bruised all over.
DOCTOR: (To the Policemen.) It's a good thing you chaps turned up when you did, otherwise we might have been lynched. (To JO.) Lethbridge Stewart must have sent them. Ah, it's nice to know he can use his head once in a while.
35: INT. UNIT HEADQUARTERS. COMMUNICATIONS ROOM
(SERGEANT BENTON sits at a radio set.)
SERGEANT BENTON: Yes sir, I've checked with County Headquarters. You were right.
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE STEWART: (OOV: Over tannoy.) Then it's not a police car at all?
SERGEANT BENTON: No sir, definitely not.
36: INT. POLICE CAR
(As the journey continues, the DOCTOR continues to examine the circuit. JO rubs her bruises and then looks out of the window. She jogs the DOCTOR'S arm.)
JO: Doctor!
DOCTOR: Careful.
JO: Where are they taking us?(He too looks out of the window.)
DOCTOR: Well it certainly isn't Tarminster.
JO: It's some sort of a quarry.(He puts the circuit back into his pocket.)
DOCTOR: Excuse me officer, could I see your warrant card?
(One of the Policemen slowly turns round and looks at them in silence. The DOCTOR looks suspicious and leans forward. JO gasps out as the DOCTOR pulls the Policeman's "face" away. Behind it is the blank face of an Auton.)
