THE WHEEL IN SPACE

by DAVID WHITAKER
from a story by KIT PEDLER

EPISODE THREE

first broadcast - 11th May 1968
running time - 25mins 37secs

1. SPACE

(The Silver Carrier hangs motionless in Space.)

2. ROCKET CONTROL ROOM

(The control clock reaches six o'clock and the panel lights up. Nearby in a dark corner, two small eggs are growing in the room with an strange increasing electrical hum. They get bigger and bigger and a clicking noise can be heard.

One of the eggs begins to move. A vaguely humanoid figure is seen inside one egg. As the noise reaches its zenith, the figure within becomes more sharply defined - Tall, thin, more metal, like a robot in human shape.

It starts to move and the grating dramatically changes in pitch as a stubby metallic fist brutally punches through the skin of the sphere. The brittle shell of the synthetic womb is no match for the awesome strength of a Cyberman. The Doctor's second most dangerous and ruthless enemies have awakened...)

3. OPERATION ROOM

(LEO and TANYA are by a monitor. On it is the Silver Carrier. TANYA is pointing a finger at her nose.)

TANYA: My nose never let me down.
LEO: Well, don't overwork it, eh. I mean it's rather pretty. Too much exercise might damage it's shape.
TANYA: (Half laughing.) If something happens don't say I didn't warn you. That rocket's dangerous!
LEO: Nah, not for long. Just as Jarvis gives the word, the laser will blast it out of existence.

4. POWER ROOM

(JAMIE is wondering how to put the capacitor out of action. He sees a plastic spray on a shelf and takes it. He opens the capacitor and starts to spray the plastic. Suddenly JAMIE is grabbed by JARVIS and BILL!)

JARVIS: Red-handed!
JAMIE: Wait, I can explain...
BILL: What do you think you are doing, you fool!
JARVIS: Oh, he's no fool,...

(BILL tries to wash away the plastic but it's too late! The plastic has hardened. JARVIS holds JAMIE in a vice grip.)

JARVIS: ...are you?! You're a saboteur!
JAMIE: No, I'm not! I'm.
JARVIS: Shut up! (To BILL.) Well?
BILL: Nah, no good! He wrecked it!
JARVIS: Completely?
BILL: Yup.
JARVIS: Watch him.

(He releases JAMIE and moves over to the communication panel. BILL moves over to JAMIE.)

JAMIE: All right, I won't give you any trouble.
BILL: Too right, you won't!
JARVIS: (Into the communicator.) Now hear this, this is the Controller...

5. GEMMA'S OFFICE

(GEMMA and ZOE are listening to JARVIS over the communicator.)

JARVIS: (OOV.) All men on Security duty to issue themselves with sidearms at once. Easy-yellow security plan to be put into effect immediately. Two off-duty men, security...

6. OPERATIONS ROOM

(LEO and TANYA are doing the same.)

JARVIS: (OOV.) section, to report to the power room - on the double!
LEO: Easy-yellow! Now what's the sudden panic?
TANYA: I told you that the Controller was up to something.
LEO: I'd better log out the blasters. Keep a eye on the Hercules cluster, will you? Zoe thinks that one of the stars in Messa 13 is about to enter the nova state.
TANYA: That's all we need! A star blowing into a thousand pieces. I told you that my nose never lets me down!

7. ROCKET CONTROL ROOM

(By now, both CYBERMEN have broken out of their eggs. They are sitting in the chairs by the control panel. On the panel's screen we see a picture of another space ship growing larger and larger and then a massive CYBER-PLANNER is seen. It's obvious that the computer is on board the other space ship.)

CYBER-PLANNER: (OOV.) Report.
CYBERMAN 1: Phase one complete.
CYBER-PLANNER: (OOV.) Cybermats are launched.
CYBERMAN 1: Phase two complete.
CYBER-PLANNER: (OOV.) You are undetected on the rocket?
CYBERMAN 1: Phase three ready.
CYBER-PLANNER: (OOV.) Report again after phase three.

8. CORRIDOR

(GEMMA and ZOE are in a corridor and other members of the Wheel's crew are running about.)

VOICE: (OOV.) All sections - easy-yellow status.
GEMMA: I hope you can prove your theory, Zoe.
ZOE: Oh, I'm right. Hercules 208 in Messa 13 is definitely on the blink. I can even tell you the radiation affect on Earth, if you like?
GEMMA: (Starting to move.) Not now.
ZOE: I suppose you are going to see the fun, whatever it is.
GEMMA: Somehow, I don't think this is fun.

9. POWER ROOM.

(Two guards are holding JAMIE. JARVIS is very angry and BILL is looking inside the capacitor.)

BILL: Yeah, I see.
JARVIS: Well?
BILL: Yep.
JARVIS: WELL?
BILL: (To JAMIE.) You done a good job boy.
JARVIS: What's the exact damage?
BILL: Serious sir. All of the primary relay conducts are fused shut. This whole unit will have to be stripped down.
JARVIS: How long?
BILL: Well, that depends on how much plastic he uses and how far down it went.
JARVIS: HOW LONG?
BILL: I honestly don't know Chief.
JARVIS: But surely you can give some idea? Without the laser beam, we virtually helpless!
BILL: All right, let's assume the worst that the laser's absolutely finished. I mean, this charged storage part of it. A replacement might take a week.
JARVIS: A WEEK?!

(GEMMA enters.)

GEMMA: What's the trouble Jarvis?
JARVIS: This young idiot has ruined the laser. Poured quick-seal plastic right into the relay lines of the booster mirrors!
GEMMA: (To JAMIE.) Why?
JARVIS: Sabotage!
JAMIE: No!
JARVIS: What are you? One of these pull-back-to-Earth maniacs? Where are your friends? Out there in deep space, just waiting to come in and attack us when you put our laser out of action?
JAMIE: Och, you're talking rubbish!
BILL: You can't deny it boy, we all saw you.
JAMIE: I'm not denying it.
GEMMA: Is the laser really out of action, Jarvis?
JARVIS: Yes it is.
GEMMA: Zoe calculated a new star going nova. We haven't checked with radar yet but she is usually right.
JARVIS: How bad?
GEMMA: The radiation flux will swing the Perseus shower right in on us. With the laser we could knock some of them out.
BILL: Hey, I better get started.
JARVIS: Confirm all Zoe's calculations with the radar computers. Come on, bring him.

(The guards take JAMIE, and he, the guards, JARVIS and GEMMA leave the room. BILL uses the communications device.)

BILL: All hands to the power room. Immediate and urgent. All hands to the power room.

(He examines the capacitor.)

BILL: Argh, what a mess!

(While he examines the capacitor a Cybermat appears from a cupboard door. BILL spots it.)

BILL: Well, I'll be...

(The Cybermat moves as BILL moves over to have a look.)

BILL: Hey, hey, hang on.

(He bends down to have a look.)

BILL: I'm not going to hurt you. Well, where did you spring from?

(He touches it.)

BILL: Metal? Well, you are a strange little creature aren't you? Some form of space bug?

(He hears footsteps and opens the cupboard door and moves the Cybermat into the cupboard and closes the door.)

BILL: Oh hello. I believe we'd better hide you billy bug. Or they'll believe I've gone bonkers.

(RUDKIN enters.)

BILL: Er, Rudkin, lets get started right away, shall we? Pass me the thermo...

10. OPERATION ROOM

(The group that left the power room enters.)

JARVIS: (To technicians.) Confirm Zoe's figures and ready computers two and five. (To JAMIE.) Didn't let yourself know what you are getting into, did you. Have you ever been in a sky station when a meteorite hits?
JAMIE: Look, I'm sorry.
GEMMA: Why did you do it?
JAMIE: Well, they said that you were going to blow up the rocket.
JARVIS: So?
GEMMA: Why not?
JAMIE: I couldn't let you, that's all.
JARVIS: Why? WHY?
JAMIE: Because the Doctor told me to protect it.

11. DOCTOR'S ROOM

(The DOCTOR is in his shirt-sleeves and is in bed. JAMIE is with him.)

DOCTOR: That's marvellous isn't it? "The Doctor told me to protect it." You don't give a reason. Just leave me to get you out of trouble.
JAMIE: Well, I had to stop them destroying the rocket didn't I.
DOCTOR: Oh, I suppose so.
JAMIE: Course I did. I mean, what about the TARDIS? A fine thing if they blown it to pieces!
DOCTOR: I was just beginning to enjoy this little rest.
JAMIE: Anyway, what are you going to tell them?
DOCTOR: I don't know. Jamie, What did happen on the rocket?

(JAMIE looks at him puzzled.)

DOCTOR: Don't look at me like that.
JAMIE: You don't remember?
DOCTOR: It's a bit hazy.
JAMIE: Well, I found you in that corridor near the control room. Something had just shaken the rocket and tumbled me out of bed and whatever it was must have made you stumble as well.
DOCTOR: I suppose I hit my head.
JAMIE: You honestly can't remember?
DOCTOR: No. But it's there. It's there at the back of my mind.
JAMIE: But what about the machine then? The one that was going to attack you. But surely you remember that?
DOCTOR: Machine? No. But there is something. Some warning, some menace...

12. ROCKET CONTROL ROOM

(The word menace is overlapped with the face of a Cyberman. The two CYBERMEN are again reporting to the CYBER-PLANNER.)

CYBER-PLANNER: Report progress.
CYBERMAN 1: All phases proceeding as planned.
CYBER-PLANNER: Prepare phase four.

13. OPERATION ROOM

(ENRICO is talking on the radio while LEO, TANYA and ZOE look on.)

ENRICO: Yes. Yes. It's all happening in the Hercules cluster. Okay.
ZOE: I told you. The same thing that happened in the Perseus cluster a week ago.
TANYA: Except we had the laser then so we can deflect the meteorites.
ENRICO: Picture.

(Points to the radar scanner which shows the meteorites approaching.)

ENRICO: And beginning to emit hard Gamma already.
LEO: It's bigger than the Perseus one Rico.
ENRICO: It's four magnitude up.

(LEO blow out a big breath.)

ENRICO: Well, I see if I can get some further information for you.
LEO: I better give the bad news to the controller.

(TANYA and ZOE follow LEO as he starts to move.)

TANYA: What are we going to do if Bill can't repair the laser in time?
LEO: Well, we've got the con-link force field.
ZOE: The neutron barriers won't help us. A star of this magnitude when it goes nova deflects meteorites with a mass of two hundred tons each.
TANYA: Two hundred...
ZOE: At least.
LEO: (A bit put out with Zoe.) Aren't you ever wrong, eh?
ZOE: (Laughing.) Rarely.
LEO: No. It's all a problem in solid geometry to you isn't it. Don't you care what happens here?
ZOE: Well of course. I just tell you what is going to happen.
LEO: Just like a robot. Fact, calculations.
TANYA: Leo!
LEO: Proper little brainchild. All brain and no heart!

(LEO storms off and TANYA with a "sorry" look at ZOE goes after him. ZOE stands there with a surprised look on her face.)

14. POWER ROOM

(The repairs are just being started. Two technicians are helping BILL.)

BILL: Gently now, gently. Keep it upright. Good, good. Fine, get Magna Seven over right away will you.

(The technicians leave and alone BILL goes over and opens the cupboard door to reveal the Cybermat.)

BILL: Hello Billy-bug. You should've stayed where I...

(He notices that all of the Bernalium has been eaten.)

BILL: Hey, did you do this?

(He opens the cupboard to see that all of the Bernalium has been eaten too.)

BILL: What have you done?

(He turns about and the Cybermat is gone. Another crew member (RUDKIN) has entered.)

RUDKIN: What's the matter?
BILL: What? Oh nothing, how's it going?
RUDKIN: Okay now. Dr. Corwyn's taken me off communications.
BILL: Good. Good.
RUDKIN: The Controller asked me to come and see how you are getting along.
BILL: Oh you can tell him that we are good time. Err, come on, can you do something for me?
RUDKIN: Yes?
BILL: Go down to spares and check their Bernalium stock will you.
RUDKIN: Right.

(RUDKIN leaves. BILL waits until he has gone and then checks the cupboard again to see if the Cybermat is in there.)

BILL: That one is all right anyway. I'll murder that little pest.

(He crosses back to the laser and starts working. Behind him, two Cybermats come on out from the crate they were hiding in.)

15. DOCTOR'S ROOM

(GEMMA is using the stethoscope to check the Doctor. JAMIE is there too and is watching GEMMA checking the Doctor over.)

GEMMA: You and your friend are healthy specimens aren't you.
DOCTOR: Well, we keep fit one way or another. Does all this mean I've got to get up?
GEMMA: No, I'm afraid not just yet.
DOCTOR: Good.
GEMMA: Does your head ache?
DOCTOR: Well, it did but it's better now.
GEMMA: Any loss of memory?
DOCTOR: Well, just a little.
GEMMA: Does it make you anxious?
DOCTOR: (Smiling.) I think that you find my psyche in every good order.
GEMMA: Probably but don't strain to remember. Concussion can bring about temporary lapses in memory. There is quite a lot we don't know about the memory bank yet you know. Good.

(She puts away her tools.)

GEMMA: I suppose the part that you can't remember is why you told Jamie to protect the rocket.
DOCTOR: Oh yes I can. Perfectly. We're not saboteurs, you know.
GEMMA: Probably not.
DOCTOR: The last thing we want to do is to inferred with what you are doing here, or put you in any danger. You saved our lives on that rocket and we're very grateful.
GEMMA: But you have inferred. We are in the path of a very serious meteorite storm. The second we have been threatened with in a week. Only we have no defence against this new one.
JAMIE: But I tell you that I didn't know about the meteorites.
GEMMA: I hope not.
JAMIE: I don't even know what they are.

(ZOE enters.)

ZOE: (To GEMMA.) Is it all right? The guard said that you are here.
DOCTOR: Guard?
GEMMA: We can't let you roam about wherever you want to.
JAMIE: Aye, we're under arrest.
DOCTOR: Oh no!
ZOE: How did you pilot the rocket, Doctor?
DOCTOR: I don't think we met have we?
GEMMA: Zoe, Doctor... John Smith isn't it?

(The Doctor looks about for Dr. John Smith.)

JAMIE: (Pushing the Doctor a little bit to get his attention.) John... John...

(The DOCTOR realises that John Smith is himself.)

DOCTOR: Oh, oh yes. (To Zoe.) And what do you do here, Zoe?
ZOE: I'm an astrophysicist, pure-mathematics major.
GEMMA: With honours.
DOCTOR: Oh, I am impressed.
GEMMA: We use Zoe as our second opinion.
ZOE: (To the DOCTOR.) You didn't answer my question.
DOCTOR: What question?
JAMIE: (To ZOE.) You know, I'm surprised you didn't know the answer. Don't tell me there is something you can't work out.
ZOE: (To the DOCTOR.) How did you pilot the rocket ship? You see, I calculated its original course. It was a surface and supply station for number five station. Overdue and presumed lost nine weeks ago. Well the rocket couldn't drift 87,000,000 miles off course.
DOCTOR: So what's your theory?
ZOE: Well, there is a record of the last contract with the Silver Carrier rocket. It had seven million miles to touchdown and enough fuel for twenty million. Well, it couldn't have drifted off in the time involved. It must have been driven and piloted.
JAMIE: Och, you are a right wee space-detective.
ZOE: There is only one solution. That rocket was re-fuelled in space. Provided for at least with another twelve fuel rods.
DOCTOR: Well, it is an interesting theory...
ZOE: Oh, it isn't a theory. You can't disprove the facts. It's pure logic.
DOCTOR: Logic, my dear Zoe, merely enables one to be wrong with authority. Suppose there was a faulty automatic pilot.
ZOE: To drive a rocket 87,000,000 miles on fuel for 20,000,000?
DOCTOR: Well, it's a possibility.
ZOE: (Firm.) That rocket was driven here somehow. I know it was.

16. SPACE

(Another view of the Silver Carrier.)

17. ROCKET CONTROL ROOM

(Again the two Cybermen are sitting in the chairs by the control panel. On the panel's screen we see the picture of another space-ship growing larger and larger again for the massive CYBER-PLANNER wants to speak to them.)

CYBER-PLANNER: (OOV.) We have ionised the star. The first meteorites will strike the Wheel.
CYBERMAN 2: Phrase three is in operation.
CYBER-PLANNER: (OOV.) The Cybermats will consume Bernalium. Without Bernalium the Wheel cannot deflect the meteorites.
CYBERMAN 2: They will discover Bernalium on board this rocket-ship.
CYBERMAN 1: Phrase four is ready.
CYBER-PLANNER: (OOV.) Remove any control from Cybermats.

(The screen goes blank. The first Cyberman points at the clock in the middle of the control panel and the signal is sent from the Cyberman's finger to the panel. The clock starts going around and the controls starts to move by themselves. A light on the panel starts to bleep...)

18. POWER ROOM

(...and the Cybermats eyes are flashing with the same pulses and they start to move out.)

19. GEMMA'S OFFICE

(Meanwhile, GEMMA is talking to BILL DUGGAN.)

GEMMA: Let me get this right, Bill. You say that the Bernalium...
BILL: Gemma, it's useless. All of it.
GEMMA: But what about the reserves?
BILL: Yea, I had a check made of the stock but then I remembered that I am holding most of it over in the power room. Well, you know how much we rely on that Bernalium rods. They are the only ones that stand up in the X-ray laser.
GEMMA: I am far more interested in these creatures of yours.
BILL: Oh, there is only one of them, at least that is all I found.
GEMMA: Did anybody else see it?
BILL: Nope.
GEMMA: Did you tell anybody else about it?
BILL: Oh, you're joking. They think I'm mad anyway for messing about with space flora. How do you think they'll react if I tell them I found a space-bug.
GEMMA: What's it like?
BILL: Oh, it's smallish about so big.

(He holds out his hands to show GEMMA.)

BILL: Made out of metal or some kind of telstar material.
GEMMA: And you say that it eats metal?
BILL: Oh, not exactly. It sort of draws the life out of it. You know, corrodes it. You should see what it's done to the Bernalium store.
GEMMA: But... how did this space-bug get inside the Wheel in the first place.
BILL: You can search me, I just found it. It could have gone through one of the loading bays or the airlocks.
GEMMA: (In thought.) Yes, I suppose... I suppose that's possible.
BILL: What's the matter? You think I am a nut too do you?
GEMMA: No but I want to see this creature for myself, Bill.
BILL: All right then, I'll introduce you to billy-boy.

(They leave en route to the Power room.)

20. POWER ROOM

(RUDKIN enters the room and looks about for BILL. On the floor he sees a Cybermat and then the cupboard opens and another Cybermat falls out. RUDKIN's eyes open in terror and he dashes across and picks up a hammer and is about to hit a Cybermat when its eyes flash and RUDKIN drops the hammer and falls to the floor with a cry. He stands up quickly and turns about to see another Cybermat. All three start to close in, and he grabs a bottle of Instant Plastic from the shelf. He starts spraying it on the closest Cybermat, causing it to stop, but the bottle runs out and the beams from the second Cybermat cause him to drop the bottle. He is trapped. All he can do is scream as the Cybermats grow closer and closer...)

21. CORRIDOR

(GEMMA and BILL hear the scream and run toward the Power Room.)

22. DOCTOR'S ROOM

(The DOCTOR, JAMIE and ZOE hear the scream, and JAMIE dashes to the door and opens it. FLANNIGAN is there guarding the door.)

FLANNIGAN: You can't come out.
JAMIE: What was that scream!?
FLANNIGAN: I don't know. It sounded like all the devils in hell was hounding someone but you still can't come out!

(He closes the door.)

23. POWER ROOM

(GEMMA and BILL burst in to discover the body. They both get down to have a look and there are no Cybermats to be seen. Two other crew members enter the room.)

BILL: Is he dead?
GEMMA: Yes, I'll tell the Controller.

(She starts to leave but notices a small lump on the floor - it is the Cybermat which RUDKIN covered in plastic.)

GEMMA: What's that?

24. DOCTOR'S ROOM

(The DOCTOR is holding the plastic coated Cybermat in his hand while ZOE is telling him about what has just happened.)

ZOE: The Controller has ordered an immediate enquiry. I'm much more interested in this. ('this' meaning the Cybermat.)
DOCTOR: This was found by the body was it?
ZOE: Yes. I had to get one of the men to take a floor-plate up. You just can't cut through plateoxide. It's column and strength is higher than comn-steel.
DOCTOR: Call it a knot that can't be untied either.
ZOE: I don't know what that means.
JAMIE: Oh it means that...

(JAMIE goes on but it's clear that he doesn't know either.)

DOCTOR: It means that there is always a solution.
JAMIE: Aye.
DOCTOR: The Bernalium is a right-off is it?
ZOE: Completely. We've got a few spares but not half enough. We have to get more up from Earth.
DOCTOR: The X-Ray laser gun, the main arm of the Wheel relies on Bernalium.
ZOE: You think there is a connection?
DOCTOR: It's a possibility isn't it. Jamie, what do you think?
JAMIE: Me... errr... Well, there can be a saboteur on board. Jarvis Bennett. He did say something about a group of people "Up For Earth" or something like that.
ZOE: Well, there are such people. You do want to stop the space programme.
JAMIE: Yes, let's suppose they planted a saboteur on board, waiting for the right moment. Along drifts the rocket and we're abroad. The saboteur thinks that it is the right moment and strikes.
DOCTOR: And murders?
JAMIE: Well, if he was caught messing about with the Bernalium stuff, he may had to kill.
DOCTOR: Well, it is an interesting theory.
JAMIE: Aye, but it fits.
DOCTOR: Hmm... It doesn't fit this. (Holding up the Cybermat.)
ZOE: Which we can't cut inside.
JAMIE: Argh, it's just a spare part of something. The dead man tried to defend himself, used the quick set plastic, misfired and went over this part of machinery.
DOCTOR: Well, we can find out.
ZOE: How?
DOCTOR: With the X-ray machine.
ZOE: (Laughing.) Of course. Why didn't I think of that.
JAMIE: Aye, why didn't you?
ZOE: Well, all I had to go on was the fact that plateoxide is unbreakable. Why, I just didn't think of X-rays.
DOCTOR: Simple common sense works wonders sometimes, Zoe.
ZOE: (To JAMIE.) Well, at least, you didn't think of X-rays. That would have been awful.

(The DOCTOR laughs at JAMIE's face.)

25. OPERATIONS ROOM

(JARVIS is talking to the others.)

JARVIS: (To BILL.) You're under restriction. I'll have you back to Earth on the next ship that puts in. I want a written report on the whole affair and I want it in my hands tomorrow morning - first thing. That's all.

(BILL walks away and JARVIS turns to the others.)

JARVIS: He's confined to quarters. Tanya, you'll have to take over some of Leo's operations.
TANYA: Very well.
JARVIS: Now Leo, I want that laser working as soon as possible. Get on to it at once.

(LEO leaves, and ENRICO, who has been listening to the communicator, suddenly gets something.)

ENRICO: Controller.
JARVIS: (To others.) Now all of you. Let's get back to normal working conditions.

(He abruptly turns to GEMMA)

JARVIS: Gemma, I want a word with you in my quarters.

(He turns to Enrico.)

JARVIS: All right?
ENRICO: Radar and balance are ready sir. We're waiting for the go-ahead.
JARVIS: Give it!
ENRICO: Yes sir. (Into communicator while the whole of the bridge crew is listening.) Hello travel party, you are free to embark now. We will operate any pass doors and emergency stand-bys.
VALLANCE: (OOV.) Entering departure hatch for oxygen rating now. Standing-by.
ENRICO: Yes, receiving you. Stand-by for...

(JARVIS storms off the bridge with GEMMA close behind him. While ENRICO and some others are talking, TANYA goes over to BILL who is standing alone by the door.)

TANYA: I'm sorry, Bill!
BILL: It's my own fault. I'm a fool.
TANYA: You didn't do anything.
BILL: I should have told someone. I know the old man doesn't believe me, but there was a creature there.

(LEO comes to joins them.)

LEO: We did search all round, Bill. The power house is in a heck of a mess. There wasn't a sign of anything.
BILL: I didn't dream it, did I. Oh, what's the use of talking. Rudkin's dead. I'd give anything... What's the use of talking.

(Clearly upset he leaves the bridge.)

TANYA: (To LEO.) I thought you said you found some corroded metal in the power room.
LEO: Yes. Gemma wanted me to keep it quiet until she talked to Jarvis. You know, all this extra work means that we won't be spending all too much spare time together.
TANYA: (Smiling.) I'll find someone else to keep me company.

(She turns to Leo with a smile.)

TANYA: I'd hate it if you didn't have a sense of humour.

26. GEMMA'S OFFICE

(Things are not going well.)

JARVIS: No, No, No! There is too much unexplained. Too many irrational phenomena. What's the matter with you people?! I can't turn round without somebody dreaming up some odd little thing happening, some little emotion-based fantasy!
GEMMA: Calm down, Jarvis.
JARVIS: Did you hear that fool, Duggan. Space-rodent. The man's a wreck.
GEMMA: Jarvis, will you listen...
JARVIS: If it's sensible, yes.
GEMMA: I'd like to go through some facts.
JARVIS: (Sits down.) All right. All right, I'm listening.
GEMMA: One, the rocket drifts near. Two, drops in temperature, temporary, adjustment back to normal. Three, drops in air pressure, temporally adjustment back to normal. Four, two meteorite storms in above avenge dimension, both within seven days. Five, two strangers bought to the Wheel, one of them sabotages our armaments...
JARVIS: Don't lump all those things together. I thought that you were going to be sensible.
GEMMA: They could be connected.
JARVIS: Oh, for heaven's sake, Gemma. Don't you start. What are you trying to do, make trouble?
GEMMA: We've got trouble, Jarvis. You're just sticking your head in the sand. Bill Duggan's appellations, call them what you like, only started to appear after the rocket appeared. After the drops in air pressure and Bernalium, the one thing vital to our defences, Bernalium is corroded just at the time that we are facing a big meteorite storm. I tell you, that rocket is the basis of all our troubles.
JARVIS: Don't you worry about that. I've got some men to go across and look it over. But mysteries, please Gemma, not you as well.

27. DOCTOR'S ROOM

(The DOCTOR has a projector on his lap.)

ZOE: The X-rays are processed now. Can you turn out the light Jamie.

(JAMIE turns out the light.)

DOCTOR: Here we go. Now, let's see what we've got.

(The Cybermat image is shown up on the wall encased in the plastic.)

ZOE: What's that?!
DOCTOR: It's a Cybermat!
JAMIE: Aye.
DOCTOR: The lights, Jamie, the lights!

(The lights come back on.)

DOCTOR: Cybermats!
JAMIE: The Cybermen must be here too!
DOCTOR: Yes, and there is only one place where they can be. On that rocket!

(We close in on his face.)

28. SPACE

(VALLANCE and LALEHAM, in space-suits, move towards the Silver Carrier.)

29. CABIN

(They climb abroad through the airlock and see a lot of crates. They go and have a look at these when suddenly they hear a noise behind them. It's the Cybermen. Before VALLANCE can move, one of the Cyberman emits a mesmerising light-beam from its forehead. VALLANCE cries out, but then he gives in to the power. LALEHAM manages to pick up a spanner but the light-beam from the other Cyberman causes him to drop it, and he is soon taken over. The two hypnotised men turn to their new masters.)

CYBERMAN 1: You will take us to the Wheel.
CYBERMAN 2: Obey. Inside the Wheel you will help us. You will obey.

(LALEHAM and VALLANCE nod in agreement.)
